The Status of a Windows service continually indicates Starting or Stopping

Issue Sometimes as an administrator, you may need to kill a service which is stuck at starting or stopping in order to avoid having to reboot a server in the middle of the day. Or even after the reboot, the service will not start. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Enterprise Central Building Operation Licensing Server Security Expert Windows Services Access Expert Windows Services (on-premise only) Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause Sometimes the service times out and gets stuck in a loop due to fallback protocols within the service Resolution Find out the name of the service To do this, go into services and double click on the service which has stuck.   Make a note of the “Service Name”. Find out the PID of the service Open an elevated command prompt and type in: "sc queryex servicename" (where servicename is the name of the service you obtained from Step 1). Make note of the PID Kill the PID From the same command prompt type in: "taskkill /f /pid [PID]" (Where [PID] is the service number).   If it is successful you should receive the following message: "SUCCESS: The process with PID XXXX has been terminated."     Be careful of what you are killing though. If you kill a critical windows service you may end up forcing the machine to reboot on it own.   If the service returns back into this state you may need to increase the time allotment for the service to start.   Global (entire system): Open Windows Registry: Start -> Run -> regedit.exe File --> Export --> make a backup of the current registry Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Right click on the right page ---> New ---> DWORD call the new DWORD "AutoStartDelay" Set AutoStartDelay in milliseconds (decimal). Error - Upgrade using DFU mode system alarm AS status LED red

Issue AS status LED solid red for a few seconds followed by a quick blink. Device administrator and/or event log shows system alarm ..."Error - Upgrade using DFU mode"  Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Automation Server, AS, ASP, ASB Building Operation Device Administrator Building Operation WorkStation Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support Services for assistance. Cause The indication of "Error – Upgrade using DFU mode" occurs due to the fact that a possible problem with writing to the file system has been detected when booting the system. This error can be seen in WorkStation as an Alarm Event, in the Server Logs, or in Device Administrator. Nosync errors are usually seen in the system log. The configuration of the system could have been compromised as a result, although the issue is not necessarily fatal and therefore the AS is allowed to run and the situation is indicated via the red status light. A system alarm is also generated as a warning as seen in the screenshot above. Resolution Since the AS file system could have been compromised, it must be re-initialized from scratch. To clear the red light: Make sure a backup of the AS is available. Attach the Device Administrator to the AS via USB and put the AS in DFU mode (press the reset button 3 times in rapid succession) Install a new database Once the AS has had its FW and database reinstalled, restore the backup using Workstation. NOTES See Error – Upgrade Using DFU Mode  If this error occurs, especially if it occurs multiple times on the same server, check the site installation include Grounding/Earthing and power supplies and for possible EMC issues (Electromagnetic Compatibility)

Migrating Infinet controllers from Continuum to EcoStruxure Building Operation

Issue Finding the correct procedure for migrating Infinet controllers from a Continuum controller fieldbus to an AS-P. Product Line Andover Continuum,EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Continuum Cyberstation Building Operation Automation Server Premium (1.9 onwards) Building Operation Automation Server Bundled (1.9 onwards) Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support Services for assistance. Cause The wrong procedure has been followed which is not the approved and tested procedure to be used when migrating Infinet controllers from Continuum to EBO.  Resolution Procedure for Converting / Transitioning the Infinet Bus Prior to migrating the Infinet The RS-485 network cable should be routed in a continuous daisy chain bus configuration. There should not be any stub connections, stars or ring configurations. The bussed cable should pass through each node to be connected with no splits or branches in the cable network. Repeaters can be used to achieve the star, distributed star (backbone with clusters), off of the backbone. For additional information, review the article: EBO Webhelp Cabling Using the conversion tool and other engineering efforts, create the AS-P database for all Infinet devices, Infinet, Interface items, etc. in either a live AS-P or in the PCT. At the site From Continuum CyberStation,  the following must be completed to each Infinet controller that you are moving to an AS-P. Upgrade all Infinet devices that are going to be converted to the latest firmware version.  Firmware upgrading capability will not be available in EBO until a future release. Clear the memory of all Infinet devices involved before relocated to the AS-P com port by editing the controller object and selecting Runtime > Reset. If the conversion was done on the PCT, deploy the AS-P. Verify that the AS-P firmware is 1.9.0.73 or higher. Disconnect Infinet bus from the Continuum controller com port(s). Move the Infinet bus (busses) to the corresponding RS485 port(s) on the AS-P. Confirm that the Infinet devices are all showing online under the AS-P Download the Infinet devices. * Backup all Infinet devices to flash memory.   *  If the Infinet devices share data with other Infinet devices then it may be necessary to repeat this step in order to establish the complete Import/Export table. PLEASE NOTE The above steps are important! If not followed, offline and bus problems can occur. There may be a desire to skip the rest of the controllers, but the steps must be followed The likelihood is high that there will be substantial difficulties in getting the i2 controllers online and in a stable state to accept the download files. All of the Infinet controllers must be reset in Continuum before moving the bus to the AS-P.  The controllers should then be backup up to flash memory to ensure that they do not revert to their Continuum configuration following a cold start. If problems occur that make it necessary to abort the migration process and return the controllers to the Continuum system, all of the Infinet controller must have their memory cleared before re-attaching the bus on the comm port of the original Continuum controller.  For those controllers which have not established communications under the AS-P, this will mean performing a hard reset at the Infinet controller hardware. At no time should the Infinet bus be connected to the both the AS-P and the Continuum controller at the same time as this  confuses the Infinet controllers causes communications issues that will take some time to resolve. Please also see the "Infinet under the hood" community post Continuum Conversion Tool NOTES V3.0.x and v3.1.x Conversion Tools should not be used. The Workaround is to use the 2.0 Conversion Tool then upgrade. (The Conversion tool was fixed by v3.1.2.6000 (CP5)) V3.2.x onwards the Conversion Tool operates correctly v4.0.3 has an issue converting Infinet controllers, 4.01 or 4.02 should be used instead Now fixed in v4.0.3.5005 CP3(Known Issues) v3.x outperform 4.x, 5.x and 6x.(known Issues). The Workaround is to convert the dmp file in CCT 3.x then upgrade the DB to the expected version in PCT or AS-P.

Upgrading AS (Classic) to AS-P-NL

Issue Need to replace and upgrade AS (Classic) to AS-P-NL. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Automation Server (AS) Building Operation Automation Server Premium non-LON (AS-P-NL) Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause From EBO v3.2 the AS-P-NL is available, there is a need to upgrade an AS (Classic) but the AS is only supported up to v3.1. Resolution A lower version of EBO can be installed into the AS-P-NL e.g. from v2.01, but this must only be for the purpose of upgrading the database.   Therefore the upgrade path can be as this example shows, there is a requirement to upgrade an AS from v1.6: Upgrade AS v1.6 to v3.1.x) . Backup the AS. Install v3.1.x) on AS-P-NL ( x needs to be same as in step 1). Contemporary Controls Skorpion Switch and MPX RSTP Configuration

Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause Contemporary Controls Skorpion switches have several caveats to consider before using them in a site design. Specific Skorpion switch configuration settings are needed in order for the RSTP protocol to work with MPX controllers.  Resolution *NOTE: This is only for Contemporary Controls Skorpion Switches*   Contermporary Controls EISK8m-100T switch documentation: https://www.ccontrols.com/ctrlink/eiskm.php    There are a number of configuration options available to use these switches and MPX/RPX controllers. This article is not meant to be a comprehensive guide.   Two caveats to consider before using these switches:  Contemporary Controls (CC) Support has indicated that these switches have a limitation to 39 devices (MPXs) per switch. Other vendor's switches do not have this limitation and allow 39 devices per RSTP loop. Multiple RSTP loops are not supported on a Skorpion switch. Multiple Skorpion switches may be used and daisy-chained to allow for greater than 39 devices. The 39 total number includes the switch itself, so effectively, 38 MPXs. A static IP address of the switch should not be in the same IP range (10.110.210.x) if the AS-P is being used as a DHCP server. Configuring the switch this way may cause the AS-P to assign a duplicate IP address to 1 of the MPXs in that range. The DHCP server in the AS-P is a very basic DHCP server to allow for quick IP assignments in a private network. There aren't any configuration options for designated exceptions in the AS-P. (Note: This may be a security concern for sites that do not want a switch on their main network. Setting the Skorpion switch to DHCP enable can allow the ASP to assign a non-static IP to the switch and not interfere with MPXs. RSTP enabled - the snapshot below shows the settings to enable RSTP o the switch Redundancy state: STP/RSTP STP State: Enable Hello Time: 2 Version: RSTP Max Age: 40 Forward Delay: 21                                       The Bridge Priority setting should be changed to 4096 to be a higher priority than the controllers. See the Priority setting in the snapshot above. Root ID: Self-populating field will indicate "Self" when set for a single root with 1 RSTP ring Rood ID "mac-address" may indicate a different switch that is the root switch Non-STP State Port Some ports must be set to not pass BPDU RSTP traffic,  i.e. the ASP, a PC used to configure the switch and connecting other network switches. 2 or more switches can be connected to allow for more devices to be connected (38 each) but RSTP traffic must be restricted to each switch. The ports connecting them need to be configured as Non-STP.   Note: Admin edge turns off almost all RSTP traffic, but not all Non-STP State ON disables the port from participating in the STP or RSTP ring The ports that are connecting the 1st, 2nd or 3rd switches need to have Auto-MDX set properly to behave as a cross-over cable. Either that or use a physical cross-over cable. In the Skorpion configuration page, click on the picture of the switch where the ports are showing "Auto-Mdix enable" on one switch and "Auto-Mdix disable" on the other switch. Click on the actual port from the main page to get to this setting. Example: Switch 1 port 8           Switch 2 port 1            General observations: Switch manufacturers have different limitations and options for configuration. Pay close attention to the Vender’s switch and MPX documentation. After a reconfiguration of the switch, give it several minutes for convergence to take place and to let the system settle. A flooding network traffic loop state may happen in several circumstances: a. RSTP not enabled on an MPX (factory default will reset RSTP to disabled) Note: The Device Report will extract information directly from the controller b. MPX not warm started after setting RSTP c. A switch misconfiguration (Ex. Port not set to Non-STP On) A restart (power off) of the switch may be necessary to recover d. Too many RSTP devices in a loop (>39 including the Skorpion switch) e. IP address conflict This state can be observed when all the controllers go offline and access to the switch config page isn’t possible. It’s best to get RSTP working with MPXs on each individual switch with separate rings and then daisy chain them after configuring Auto-Mdix first and finally plug in the ethernet cable into the next switch. Using 2 PCs can be helpful when setting these up so that 1 can be used to access the switch(s) on the 192.168.92.x network and the other with EBO running on the other network that the ASP is set to. Otherwise switching the NIC settings back and forth is cumbersome. Once both switches are configured and both are working with RSTP, controllers may still show offline. A power cycle can clear this up so that the ASP can reassign an IP with both switches connected. *** 1 MPX controller that has not been set to RSTP will throw the whole system into offline mode. Use the device report to ensure every single controller has been set to RSTP AND has been warm started.  ***   Using the Control Panel MP Series devices link, the Search feature and the Device report in EBO can be helpful to observe all the necessary settings for MPX and RSTP Control Panel MP Series devices link

Enterprise Server (ES) taking a long time to perform shutdowns

Issue ES takes up to 30 minutes to perform a shutdown. Trace log contains multiple entries indicating "Subscription service forcefully shutting down; [sub-server name]"  "Subscription service forcefully shut down; [sub-server name]"   A secondary issue - When performing Windows Updates automatically, Windows attempts to shut down all running services within one minute which can end the Enterprise Server service prematurely Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server 3.1.x and below Large Multi-server installation  Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance.   Cause During a shutdown procedure of the Enterprise Server a call to every sub server is made to remove subscriptions. However, the thread pool that executes these commands may already be stopped and the server then waits the 15 seconds timeout period prior to moving to the next item.  On a large 100+ multi-server installation, this 15 second delay can accumulate to a lengthy shutdown period.     The trace log will contain the messages shown  in the issue and the 15-second delay between each server  Enterprise Server Trace log messages seen during shutdown showing the 15-second timeout delay.Enterprise Server Trace log messages seen during shutdown showing the 15-second timeout delay. Resolution Upgrading to 3.2.2 (and above) will rectify the timeout issue provided that the subscription thread pool has already stopped.  These versions now ignore the 15-second timeout for each sub-server if the thread pool has already stopped.   It is possible to extend the Windows service shutdown time by adding or adjusting a registry entry called WaitToKillServiceTimeout .   To change the timeout: Start the registry editor (“Regedit”) In the tree on the left, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control In the right panel, find the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value. If you don’t see it, create it by: Selecting Control on the left Choosing Edit > New > String Value (not DWORD) from the menu Naming the new value WaitToKillServiceTimeout. Double-click the WaitToKillServiceTimeout entry to bring up the Edit String window. Enter a numeric value (e.g. 60000) in the Value data field in milliseconds and click OK to save your change. Reboot your computer. The new timeout setting will not take effect until Windows restarts. Note that this modification will not make Windows wait indefinitely for your service to finish. If your service takes longer than the entered time (in this example 60 seconds), it will still be terminated. Be sure to choose a timeout value that is long enough to cover your scenario, but not too long to make shutdown time intolerable.

How to free up handle IDs in b3/i2 devices

Issue There is a limit of around 200 user-created objects in b3/i2 devices, once that limit is reached, an attempt to create a new object of any type in the device will result in  "Invalid Handle" error. See https://community.se.com/t5/Building-Automation-Knowledge/Creating-an-object-in-a-BACnet-B3-or-Infinet-controller-results/ta-p/9490 for more info.   Product Line Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Continuum b3920 Controller Continuum i2920 Controller Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause Each Continuum object is represented in the system by a "Handle Id", in b3/i2 devices, the handle ID is stored in the controller as a byte value which allows for a maximum of 255 handles, the system objects (System Variables etc.) use around 55 of the handles leaving around 200 for user-created objects.  CX controllers store handle IDs using a 2 bytes value, which allows for 65535 handles, CX controllers rarely run out of handle IDs. Resolution One way to deal with this limitation in the Continuum field devices is to combine InfinityNumeric, InfinityDateTime objects (when possible) into one object configured as an array (manual log).   EXAMPLE: The screen capture below shows 10 InfinityNumeric objects in an i2920 device that are used in the control application of a room named "MainLab"     Let's say for the purpose of this illustration that the following is the control program for MainLab     Since InfinityNumeric objects MainLab.a thru MainLab.j are used exclusivity to store values *** (i.e Setpoint etc), we can configure one of the objects as an array and have it hold all 10 values, thus allowing us to delete 9 InfinityNumeric objects and free 9 handle ids       Before deleting MainLab.b thru MainLab.j we need to modify ALL references to those objects, instead of referencing MainLab.b - MainLab.j we need to reference MainLab.a[1] - MainLab.a[9], note that MainLab.a holds its value (70) normally (not as part of the array), so in this case, we are only using 9 of the 10 array elements.     ***IMPORTANT Only InfinityNumeric and InfinityDateTime objects that are used exclusively to hold a value should be combined, if the object is being used for any of the following operations then it should be left as its own object.   Object triggers one or more programs Object is configured as a log Object is Occupancy flag of a schedule Object has alarms associated with it or is alarm point Object is a setpoint

Release the freed-up disk space from Extended Log Storage (PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB) back to Windows.

Issue After deleting unnecessary TrendLog objects from EBO and their logged data from the Extended Log Storage (PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB) by selecting the “Clear log” from the System folder (i.e.: Server1/System/Extended Log Storage/TimescaleDB/Trend/Tree View/…”), the Windows still shows the same free disk space size as it was before the deletion. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Automation Server External Log Storage PostgreSQL (pgAdmin 4) TimescaleDB  Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause PostgreSQL databases require periodic maintenance known as vacuuming for Windows to recover or reuse the freed-up disk space occupied by PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB. Resolution There are two variants of VACUUM: standard VACUUM and VACUUM FULL.  VACUUM FULL can reclaim more disk space but runs much more slowly.  VACUUM FULL requires an exclusive lock on the table it is working on, and therefore cannot be done in parallel with other use of the table. Refer to the documentation mentioned at  https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.5/routine-vacuuming.html  before performing the VACUUM command.   Below is an example of the procedure to get the freed-up disk space occupied by PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB back to Windows.   1. Back up the current PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database and save to a safe location. Backup the “ebo_db” from the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server using the pgAdmin 4 (refer to https://www.pgadmin.org/docs/pgadmin4/development/backup_dialog.html , or refer to page 8 “Backup” section of the “EBO External Log Storage Installer.pdf” document for detail).   2. Stop the External Log Storage from EBO. Open the Properties of the TimescaleDB object (/Server/System/External Log Storage/).\ Remember (take a note) the current value settings of the “Host Address” & the “Database Name” attributes. Change them to the wrong value (or clear them) so that EBO fails to connect to the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server. Repeat the above operation for all the other servers (AS’s) that are enabled/connected to the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server.   3.Delete the old logs from the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database (the “ebo_db”). Run the pgAdmin 4, select the “ebo_db”, open the “Query Tool”, and execute the below scripts:   Delete from trend_data where DATE_PART('day', now() - timestamp) > 365   Delete from event_data where DATE_PART('day', now() - timestamp) > 365   4. Vacuum the Database with Full option. From the same Query Tool on the “ebo_db”, run the below command: Vacuum Full Wait until it completes (this may take a while depending on the number of old logs that have been deleted from the tables).   5. Start the External Log Storage from EBO. Open the Properties of the TimescaleDB object (/Server/System/External Log Storage/). Set the value of the “Host Address” & the “Database Name” back to the correct value, so that the EBO server successfully connects to the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server. Verify the EBO server is connected to the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server, and it works normally.    Repeat the above operations for all the other EBO servers (AS’s) that were disabled/disconnected from the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server.

Completely removing the obsolete TrendLog objects from the EBO servers and the Extended Log Storage (PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB) database.

Issue When EBO servers (ES & AS) no more need to keep the unnecessary TrendLog objects, the obsolete objects need to be deleted from EBO servers, and their log data need to be removed from the Extended Log Storage (PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB) server as well. Cause Deleting the obsolete TrendLog objects from EBO servers does not remove the old log data of the obsolete TrendLogs left in the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database. Resolution Once the obsolete TrendLog objects are deleted from EBO servers, their log data are no longer saved in the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB. The next task is removing the old log data left in the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database.   1. As always, backup current EB & AS’s databases from EBO workstation.   2. As always, backup the current PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database and save to a safe location. 3.Remove the obsolete TrendLog from the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database (the “ebo_db”). Method_1: Delete the EBO TrendLog object from ES & AS’s & TimescaleDB using EBO workstation. (1) From the EBO workstation, expand the folder (location) of the TrendLog object, and delete the TrendLog object. (2) From the EBO workstation, go to the TimescaleDB folder (/Server 1/System/External Log Storage/TimescaleDB/Trend /Logs/Tree View), and delete the Trendlog object from PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database. (3) Verify the TrendLog disappears from both the EBO and the PostgreSQL/Timescale DB.   Method_2: If the above Method1 takes a long time to complete, you can delete the TrendLog objects from PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB database directly.  (1) From the EBO workstation, expand the folder (location) of the TrendLog object, and delete the TrendLog object. (Same as item (1) of the above Method_1) (2) From the PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB server, run the pgAdmin 4, select the “ebo_db”, open the “Query Tool”, and execute the below scripts: Find the ID of the obsolete TrendLog from the trend_meta table. Select Externallogid, source from trend_meta where sources like '%TrendLog Name or Path%' Remove the TrendLog from the 2 tables using the above found Externallogid as below. Delete from trend_data where externallogid = 1234567890 Delete from trend_meta where externallogid = 1234567890 (3) Verify the TrendLog disappears from both the EBO and the PostgreSQL/Timescale DB.
