How is a subnet defined, and what role does it play in IP networking?

Issue How is a subnet defined, and what role does it play in IP networking? Product Line EcoStruxure Access Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, EcoStruxure Security Expert, TAC I/NET Environment This explanation is based on principles outlined in TCP/IP Network Administration by Craig Hunt, published by O’Reilly & Associates, Inc Cause Subnetting is a method used to divide a larger IP network into smaller, more manageable segments called subnets. This segmentation helps optimize IP address usage, improve routing efficiency, and enhance network security and organization. Resolution What Is a Subnet? A subnet (short for subnetwork) is a logical subdivision of an IP network. It is defined by applying a subnet mask to an IP address, which determines how the address is split into: Network portion – identifies the specific network. Host portion – identifies individual devices (hosts) within that network. How Subnet Masks Work A subnet mask is a 32-bit binary pattern that accompanies an IP address. It uses binary values to indicate which part of the IP address refers to the network and which part refers to the host: A bit set to 1 in the subnet mask means the corresponding bit in the IP address is part of the network. A bit set to 0 means the corresponding bit is part of the host. Example IP Address: 192.168.1.10 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (binary: 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000 ) CIDR Notation: /24 This means: Network Address: 192.168.1.0 Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255 Usable Host Range: 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 CIDR Notation Modern networks often use CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) notation to define subnets. CIDR expresses the subnet mask as a suffix (e.g., /24 ), indicating the number of bits used for the network portion. Common CIDR Blocks CIDR  Subnet Mask Hosts per Subnet /30 255.255.255.252 2 usable hosts /24 255.255.255.0 254 usable hosts /16 255.255.0.0 65,534 usable hosts Additional Notes Subnets are local constructs: They are meaningful within the internal network and typically not visible to external networks unless explicitly routed. Subnetting supports hierarchical addressing, which simplifies routing tables and improves scalability. Proper subnetting is essential for network performance, security segmentation, and efficient IP address management.

Wireless in the MPM or other devices always enabled and running

Issue Can you disable the wireless in StruxureWare Lite Environment StruxureWare Lite site with wireless devices Cause Does the MPM emit radio waves if the Enocean & Zigbee is not configured (enabled) in the controller set up pages Resolution ZigBee is a wireless communication protocol that uses a mesh network between devices. It operates on the 2.4GHz band and is divided in 16 channels. The Zigbee Pro protocol has error-correction and can dynamically add or remove nodes to the mesh without interrupting the communication. A MPM set as a ZigBee Coordinator creates a network (more or less like a wi-fi router) and a MPM set as a ZigBee router will join an existing network. As a rule of thumb the practical distances are around 150ft in building and 300ft open air but heavily depends on the obstacles around. Disabling ZigBee through the Communication Configuration (C2G1) object will prevent data exchange between this MPM and the rest of the network. It will not disable the radio module, which could still be connected to a network. EnOcean is a 'broadcast' type of protocol that operates on 3 frequency bands. North America is currently using 315MHz and will soon be replaced by 902MHz. Europe operates on 868MHz. As a rule of thumb, the practical distances are about 50ft in building but heavily depends on the obstacles around. There is no way to disable the EnOcean module, however if no device is added or no reference to EnOcean commands are used in the scripts, the module will not transmit or receive packets. More info on wireless deployments can be found here: https://www.se.com/myschneider/content/ww/en/gc/general/ecoxpert-landing-page.jsp

SmartStruxure Lite MPM BACnet client capabilities

Issue A third party BACnet system is able to host  values from a SmartStruxure Lite MPM but an MPM does not seem able to host values from another BACnet system or device. Environment BACnet MPM-VA MPM-UN MPM-GW Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support Services for assistance. Cause SmartStruxure Lite Managers have full BACnet server capabilities, however BACnet client functionality is not native to the MPM and is currently only available through Lua programming. Resolution Integrating SmartStruxure Lite™ Managers with third-party BACnet server devices requires a BACnet client script. A sample script (download here) can be used to perform read and write operations to other devices via BACnet IP, however, a few tips and limitations must be taken into consideration before deployment on site. NOTE1: The delay at the beginning of the script (if scl.sysclock() > 90 then) must not be removed or modified. Otherwise, the MPM will keep rebooting endlessly and would require restoring its factory defaults before gaining access to Building Expert again. NOTE2 : The more points used in the script, The higher the MPMs CPU% Usage will be and the less responsive the MPM will be. Therefore, it is recommended to only read/write the necessary points and not all the points on the third party devices. Also, if some points are more important that others, the polling time can be increased to 60 seconds for example.   NOTE3: The more objects you have on the MPM, the less room you have for BACnet points. PGs, Trends and Events consume a substantial amount of CPU Usage so it is important to keep an eye on it as you add more points in the script.   NOTE4 : Run the script every 5 seconds or more if possible   Limitations: - Reading/Writing to Multi State Values (MSV) is not supported

Once uploaded the file will be visible in the drop-down list.   Requirements and Limitations Only holding registers are supported at this time (Modbus function codes 3 and 16) The CSV file mast be renamed Modbus_[label].csv where label is the name of the device or a label to help identification (e.g. Modbus_SE8000.csv) Write only registers are not supported It is not possible to use a more than 32 bits variable in write mode It is not possible to leave a blank column in CSV register configuration file except the last column It is not possible to create a continuous register table using different variable types   The CSV file must have the following format: modbus_addr,register_type,label,access,factor,unit Download example here (The text file can be viewed in a text editor but its extension must renamed to csv before uploading it to the MPM) modbus_addr: modbus register address (Decimal number between 1 and 65535) register_type: "uint" (UI16) "int" (SI16) "float" (F32) "ulong" (UI32) "int64" (SI64) "uint64" (UI64) label: name for this register, this will also be used to populate the associated object in the MPM Alphanumeric value between 1 and 32 characters. No special characters (comma, simple quotes, double quotes,%,&,@,#, etc.) access: read or read_write. read will only poll register based on driver availability (30 seconds typical) read_write will monitor for a change of value of the associated point, which will then generate a write event to the device with this new value factor: multiplier / gain Float number, typical between 0.001 and 65535. Typical use are factors of 10: (1,10,100, etc) This factor is multiplied when reading and is divided when writing.     unit: BACnet unit, used for the object units in the MPM. XIF and NXE files for a SVEA Lon I/O Module DR-N-3D1M (0-10V) module

Issue Need to download the XIF and NXE files for a SVEA Lon I/O Module DR-N-3D1M (0-10V) module, but having difficulty locating these files on the Extranet. Product Line Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, Satchwell Sigma, TAC Vista Environment SVEA XIF NXE Cause The difficulty in locating these files, is due to them being identified by their article number, in this case DR-N 3DIM. This number was used when these were classified as the SVEA devices. The Schneider version is now known as MTN881001, and not DR-N 3DIM. Resolution The Schneider Electric (MTN881001) files are located on The Exchange Download Center Download the XIF / NXE files for the SE MN881001 Download the XIF / NXE files for the SVEA DR-N 3DIM Note: It appears that although these devices are both classified as Lon I/O Module 1-10V, the XIF / NXE files are different.

What is the BACnet MSTP unit load of the SE8000 room controllers

Issue What is the unit load of SE8300 that will help me to count how many SE8300 controllers that can be added on AS ComA and ComB Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, Field Devices Environment SER8300 room controller SE8300 room controller Automation Server Cause Documentation does not state the unit load of the SE8000 range Resolution The Generic application note AN01 can be applied with answers to the transceiver interface attributes below. The SE8000 range use the ADM4850A transceivers which are a failsafe transceiver (not requiring bias) and reduced 1/8 UL load. In addition the 100K local bias resistors have been eliminated and therefore the 1/8 UL of the transceiver would be the total UL presented to the bus by the SE8000.   Transceiver Xcvr Unit Load Xcvr Failsafe Adaptor Circuit Bias Circuit Bias Load Total Unit Load Isolated 485 Bus ADM 4850A0 0.125 Yes None None 0.125 Yes** ** Unlike the normally recommended interconnection of the communication common/reference (ground) terminal on all bus devices such as documented in the generic application note for the isolated RS485 bus interfaces, the Viconics bus should be operated with the communications REF (reference) terminal open on each SE8000 and not connected to the bus shield wire, or to any other circuit. Based on the above the total number of devices can be calculated as 32/0.125 = 256 The BACnet MSTP standard specifies that the address range for BACnet master devices is 0-127 and therefore an Automation Server is limited to 127 devices per com port (254 total per AS) so this should effectively be the limiting factor.   Also check out the SmartStruxure-RS485-Controller Unit Load Quick-Help video on the Exchange.
