RSTP Troubleshooting for BACnet/IP Controllers

Issue BACnet/IP controllers are not configured in RSTP Mode by default, therefore must be configured during installation. Having RSTP Mode disabled by default allows one to connect BACnet/IP controllers to any switch, even with port security configured to detect BPDU packets and disable the port. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC IA Series Environment Multi-purpose Controller (MP-C) Multi-purpose VAV (MP-V) Room Controller IP-IO I/A Series N4 Jace8000 SmartX IP Driver for Niagara Cause RSTP protocol requires that controllers, switches, and network architecture are configured to ensure the protocol will operate as expected.  Resolution Setting RSTP Mode for BACnet/IP Controllers ALL devices in the RSTP loop MUST BE IN RSTP MODE to function properly. This is not a huge issue because during startup you can unplug 2nd side of the loop and it will function properly in a daisy chain. Ensure the SmartX Controllers are configured correctly Configuring BACnet/IP Controller Device Settings A factory or network reset returns the RSTP setting to Disabled. Important: Whenever you change RSTP settings, the controller MUST be WARM START. If you fail to perform this restart, the BACnet/IP controller will continue communicating using its previous RSTP settings. 'Activate IP Changes' does not affect RSTP mode. Ensure the switch is configured correctly per Configuring RSTP on a Managed Switch for SmartX IP Controllers. If asked to review this for a case, please provide PSS screenshots from the switch configuration page(s).  Bridge Priority = 4096 Hello Time = 2 sec Max Age = 40  (40 is the maximum value allowed by the protocol. Default is 20) Forward Delay = 21 sec Bridge Priority Considerations Change Bridge Priority by adding 4096 as switches get further away from AS. (8192, 12288, 16384, 20480, 24576, 28672) DO NOT set the priority as 32768 or higher because that is the built-in Bridge Priority of BACnet/IP Controllers. First, configure the Root Bridge Switch (closest to the Automation Server) settings. Then, configure the additional Switches in order of increasing Bridge Priority. Plug in 2nd side of the RSTP Loop If all devices stay online, then it is working properly. Now test line breaks or controllers that are powered off. If all devices go offline and/or the switch LED is flashing rapidly, then go to RSTP Troubleshooting. Managed Switch Troubleshooting Consult the documentation or contact the vendor or manufacturer to assist with configuration for the items below. Ensure the switch is IEEE 802.1D - 2004 capable. BACnet/IP Controller Networking Term Definitions RSTP Ring mentions the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol is specified in IEEE 802.1D - 2004. Ensure the firmware is up-to-date by contacting the vendor or manufacturer or downloading it from its website. Ensure ports not participating in RSTP are configured as Edge Port, Admin port, or have STP disabled. Nomenclature for those settings on your specific managed switch may vary. Adding BACnet/IP controllers to site-managed switches, work with Local IT to add these devices to their network. They will need to work with their switch vendor/manufacturer/support group to ensure the configuration of those switches because it could be more complex than changing the minimum recommended four settings above. Also, since RSTP Protocol is limited to Max Age = 40 (hops including site switches and BACnet/IP controllers), each loop's size may be limited based on their site switch network configuration and architecture.  Determined the proper configuration (or disable) for the following features. DHCP snooping Dynamic ARP inspection Denial-of-service (DOS) mitigations BPDU Guard BPDU Filter Energy-saving settings. Similar to Wake-on-LAN: the switch had minimal traffic, so ports entered power-saving mode. When they reactivated, the AS-P had already timed out, triggering a comm loss alarm. RSTP Troubleshooting Check each BACnet/IP Controller -> Diagnostics -> Device Report to confirm in RSTP Mode MANUAL CHECKOUT Double-click MP - Diagnostics Files - Device Report It will open in the default text editor Review the Device Settings section near the bottom. In firmware 1.00.0x, the report should report RSTP Mode: Enable In firmware 2.00.0x or higher, RSTP: Enabled and RSTP Status: Operational If it reports disabled, then perform Setting RSTP Mode for BACnet IP Controllers Step 1 until RSTP is working properly. USE SEARCH & EVENTS EBO 2.x MP Device IP and Settings.xml for EBO 2.0 as it only includes MP controllers EBO 3.x SmartX Device IP and Settings.xml for EBO 3.x or higher Import attached search USE RSTP STATUS GRAPHIC IN WEBSTATION MUST BE EBO 3.1 or higher which includes ClientAPI support Frontline Fridays Episode 02 - Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) Date: 2022-11-11 Mike Botens posted the following in the thread: RSTP Status TGML dated 2022-11-09 PDF of the presentation Fusion Fridays - Session 07  Date: 2020-05-28 The start of the video shows the graphics page in use RSTP Status.zip is downloaded via the link below the video. Extract the TGML and drop it on the AS to import. The suggestion is to store TGML directly under the AS to help with navigation in Webstation. bind Network to the BACnet/IP network with the BACnet/IP Controllers. (You may need a second TGML page if BACnet/IP controllers are on Primary and Secondary IP) Run from web browser via WebStation because utilizes ClientAPI KNOWN ISSUES Offline controllers that are scattered are NOT an RSTP issue. Check to see if there is a possible DHCP issue by verifying controllers are still at their AUTO-IP address (IP 169.254.nnn.nnnn Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0). RSTP communications issues affect the entire RSTP loop or one contiguous group of controllers. Factory Reset or controller replacement should leave one ethernet cable unplugged until configured for RSTP per these articles: Replace a BACnet/IP Controller in an RSTP Ring Network Workflow and MP Controller Reset Modes If BACnet/IP Controller Device Report OR RSTP Graphic reports RSTP Status: Changes Pending instead of RSTP Status: Operational, disable RSTP Mode, Warm Start, re-enable RSTP Mode, Warm Start, and check again. SmartX is now SpaceLogic. KNOWN ISSUES with Firmware affecting RSTP: If Firmware 3.02.01 is installed, please upgrade to 3.02.02. RSTP not performing as expected with Static IP addressing RSTP does not work well on RPC HW RPC-16-B HW revision 6

Tridium cloudConnector and cloudBackup Module Warnings in N4.15

Issue Warnings about module dependency issues with cloudConnector and cloudBackup modules. Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series N4 Enterprise Server I/A Series N4 Jace 9000 Cause Users may notice when starting up a station that the Application Director is giving warnings about module dependency issues with cloudConnector and cloudBackup modules. For most, this can be considered a nuisance warning that will not impact system function. This issue is reported by Tridium as NCCB-72056. The following warnings, or others related to the cloudBackup modules, may be observed on station startup:  Some may notice this issue's impact on the LexiconEditor. This is a separate issue reported as Tridium NCCB-72466.   Please be aware that Backup as a Service (BaaS) reached End-of-Life on December 31, 2024. Currently, Tridium offers Niagara Recover as the system of distribution (.dist) file safekeeping and management. Resolution For most users, this is just a nuisance error that can be ignored. For those using the LexiconEditor, deleting the relevant cloud modules will resolve this issue. The modules to be deleted (cloudBackup-rt.jar, cloudBackup-wb.jar, and cloudBackup-ux.jar) can be found in the C:\Niagara\Niagara-4.15.X.XX\modules folder.

Is it possible to have a link on a GxPage to run an executable file to launch an external application outside of the web browser?

Issue Is it possible to have a link on a GxPage to run an executable file to launch an external application outside of the web browser? Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series R2 graphics Firefox web browser Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support Services for assistance. Cause To launch an external application via a link on graphics page in a web browser. Resolution It is not possible to launch an external application from an I/A Series R2 GxPage. Two suggested workarounds are as follows. Create a hyperlink on a GxPage that links to a standard HTML web page. There would be a link to run a script on the standard HTML page to launch the external application. If the site graphics has a HTML tree created, create a new link in the tree which will run a script to launch an external application. * Take note that the HTML web page with the script link has to reside on the same computer as the external application. As an example the following script and procedure which will launch an external application in a Firefox web browser. In this case, the script will launch Windows notepad.exe. This method has been provided as a workaround but you should use and troubleshoot any information given below at your own discretion. Example of a script to launch an Notepad in Firefox: Right Click on this link and select "Save target as" to download this script as a text file We also need to configure Firefox to allow Java script to run. Run Firefox and type in 'about:Config' at the address field. Set the 'signed.applets.codebase_principle_support' to true. Be careful not to make any other changes. NOTE: This script and browser configuration may or may not work in other web browsers. Further changes may be required for this functionality in any other web browser other than Firefox.

UNC-520 heartbeat LED had no activity

Issue UNC-520 heartbeat LED had no activity but the UNC appears to be running without issues.  Environment I/A Series Universal Network Controller - UNC-520 Warning Cause The UNC CPU idle is at 0% which resulted in the UNC heartbeat LED not having any activity (always off).  In this case,  this is caused by changing the ControlEngineService executionFrequencies to faster values and objects' executionParameters frequency set to faster or fastest. The station is using large amount of CPU resources.  Resolution To correct this make the following adjustments:  In the ControlEngineService properties, Config tab, change the executionFrequencies back to the default values of fastest at 500ms, faster at 1s, normal at 2s and slower at 5s.    Change the objects' executionParameters frequencies back to the default setting of normal. You can used the AdminTool object to perform a search and replace and changed all the executionParameters frequencies to normal.  There may be a need to change these values from the default values to optimize the UNC performance. Refer to the Niagara Capacities Engineering Notes for details. You should contact Product Support if you are unsure of these settings.

Extracting backup file from Jace8000

Issue A Jace8000 requires a factory reset via installation clean distribution file but a current backup of the station is not available and the Jace is not communicating via platform or station connection. Product Line TAC IA Series Environment Jace 8000 Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause No current .dist or .bog of the Jace is available. If the Jace has to be reset to factory condition, all data is lost. Resolution If the Jace8000 is running N4, then utilize the USB port to make a backup to a USB stick per the Jace8000 Backup and Restore Guide. If the Jace8000 is configured for AX, the USB backup is not available, an attempt to transfer the station using a File Transfer Protocol utility can be attempted.   Connect to the Jace via serial shell using Putty or a similar program, refer to the System Shell section of the Jace8000 Install and Startup Guide for details.  Once the System Shell menu is displayed, enter 4 to select Enable/Disable SSH/SFTP.  When prompted enter a port number, 22 is typically used for this purpose Using the FTP utility, connect to the Jace.  The following screenshot shows the settings when using FileZilla to do this. Enter the IP address of the Jace, the platform user name and password and the port number you enabled in the Jace and click on Quickconnect. Jace 8000 Serial Debug System Shell

Issue How to connect to the Jace 8000 system shell Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series Jace 8000 Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause Multiple diagnostic and low-level configuration processes need to be performed directly connected to the Jace 8000 in the system shell of the device. Resolution Connect the USB cable between the controller’s Debug port and the USB port you are using on your PC   On your PC, start your terminal emulation software. For example to start PuTTY from the Windows Start menu, this is typically Programs > PuTTY → PuTTY. PuTTy can be downloaded at no cost if you do not already have it on your PC. In the tree in the PuTTY Configuration dialog, expand Connection and click Serial. Set the “Serial line to connect to” for your PC’s (USB) COM port to use. For example, COM3. NOTE: You can examine Ports in Windows Device Manager to determine which serial port is in use on the PC. If you don't see the Jace in the COM ports, you will need to install the driver which can be Downloaded from FTDI.  It is also attached to this document below for Win10. Set the “Configure the serial line” fields as follows: • Speed (baud): 115200 • Data bits: 8 • Stop bits: 1 • Parity: None • Flow control: None In the tree in the PuTTY Configuration dialog, click Session and then click/select the “Connection type” as Serial NOTE: (Optional) You can save this configuration to reuse (load) in future PuTTY to JACE serial sessions. To do this, type in a connection name in the “Saved Sessions” field (for example, “JACE- 8000-S”), and click Save. When you start PuTTY again to serially connect to the JACE, select this name and click Load. At the bottom of the PuTTY Configuration dialog, click Enter. At the login prompt, enter a platform user name, and at the password prompt, the platform password. a. If prompted for system passphrase, enter the platform’s system passphrase. If login is successful, the TITAN System Shell menu appears. When finished making platform changes from the system shell, do the following: • If no changes or reboot is not necessary, simply type L to Logout. • If changes require rebooting, select the Reboot option. Type “y” at the “Are you sure you want to reboot [y/n]” prompt, and press Enter. Shutdown-related text appears in the terminal (PuTTY) window. Click the Close control (upper right corner) in the terminal session (PuTTY) window. Click OK in the “PuTTY Exit Confirmation” popup dialog. Unplug the USB connector from the JACE’s Debug port. This procedure is simply how to connect using USB serial port for system shell.  More information about functions available once connected can be found in other Knowledge Base articles and in the Jace 8000 Install and Startup Guide

NiagaraD Fails to Start (ERROR CODE 1053)

Issue In Niagara Enterprise Server versions older than N4.9, the Niagara Service fails to start. Typically the service successfully starts when the 'plat installdaemon' is executed. Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series N4 Enterprise Server (earlier than N4.9) Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause The Niagara daemon fails to restart automatically after a server reboot Resolution For older Niagara versions, these are two workarounds that may work in some cases:   Option 1:  Go to Start > Run > and type regedit  Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control  With the control folder selected, right click in the pane on the right and select new DWORD Value  Name the new DWORD: ServicesPipeTimeout  Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify  Click Decimal, type '180000', and then click OK  Restart the computer Option 2: Create a Task Scheduler task that calls the command "net", with the arguments "start niagara" five minutes after boot.   Alternative Solution (reported to work on Niagara older than 4.7): There are two solutions to implement in the Niagara Service. Before performing the settings below you must first have NiagaraD successfully installed. After the computer has rebooted, manually install NiagaraD using 'Plat installdaemon'. Once the service is installed implement the two configurations below. Open Windows 'Services' and then double-click the 'Niagara' service to open the Niagara Service Properties window . You can select to delay the start of the Niagara Service which helps give Windows time to initialize before the service attempts to start. Set the recovery options on the 'Recovery' tab. It is recommended to set all three 'failure' options to 'Restart the Service'

Do not install N4.11 or 4.12 to a JACE-8000 or Edge 10 running 4.10U7 or later

Issue Upgrading a JACE-8000 or Edge-10 from 4.10U7 to 4.11 or 4.12 will prevent Niagara Daemon from starting.  You will be unable to connect via Workbench or Browser. Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series N4 Jace 8000 Tridium Edge 10 Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause The software in builds 4.10u7 and later LTS builds (4.10u8, 4.10u9, 4.10u10) was released after 4.11 and 4.12 reached EOL.   4.10u7 contains a newer signing key that is not recognized by 4.11 and 4.12. Resolution When upgrading JACE-8000 and/or Edge 10 running 4.10 LTS builds 4.10u7 and later, please skip over 4.11 and 4.12 and instead upgrade to 4.13u3 or newer. Alternatively, you may apply the dist that reverts JACE-8000 to clean 4.9u1 state, or for Edge-10, the dist that reverts it to clean 4.7 state. You can then install 4.11u2 or 4.12u2, if that's the version you have to use.  If you've already attempted the commissioning operation and bricked a device, and have backups, you can connect to the debug port and use the factory reset process per the documentation.  For Edge 10, consult the section titled Factory Default Recovery  in the Niagara Edge 10 Install and Startup Guide.  For JACE-8000, consult the section titled Restoring factory defaults  in the JACE-8000 Backup and Restore Guide. If you are lacking any backups for the host, then before performing the factory reset, you should enable SSH/SFTP via the debug port, and then copy out the Station files using Filezilla or WinSCP or equivalent.  Reach out to your support channel if you have difficulty finding the location of station files. Typically, the files will be in a subfolder of /home/niagara/stations. The config.bog file will be keyring encrypted, and you'll have to reset it using the Bog File Protection Tool. See Editing the .bog file passphrase offline in the Niagara Platform Guide  for details on using the Bog File Protection Tool.  For details on using the debug port on JACE-8000, see Debug port  in the JACE-8000 Install and Startup Guide.  For details on using the debug port on Edge-10, see Connecting to the debug system shell  in the Niagara Edge 10 Install and Startup Guide.

Niagara 4.15 Station Bog File Encryption Changes

Issue Bog File Encryption Changes in 4.15 Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series N4 Enterprise Server I/A Series N4 Jace 9000  Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Cause In Niagara 4.15, to continue to provide the best security practices, the user password hashes are now included in the encryption by the system passphrase. Resolution The system passphrase was introduced in Niagara 4 to provide additional protection to sensitive data from the Niagara system. Prior to Niagara 4.15, this included all reservable passwords (such as Niagara Network, database connection passwords, etc.), excluding the user's passwords as those are protected by being hashed. If you do not have the system passphrase for a station and need to unlock it through Workbench, both the user and encrypted data such as passwords will be removed where prior to Niagara 4.15 the user were left untouched as they are hashed. If you are copying a station from a remote host which you do not have the system passphrase for, you will need to reset the passphrase to successfully copy the station onto a new remote host. You will be required to enter the passphrase to edit or modify users or encrypted properties such as password fields for email, Niagara Network, etc. Prior to Niagara 4.15, you could edit and modify users without the passphrase, in Niagara 4.15 this will require the passphrase to decrypt the users.   Operation Niagara 4.14 Niagara 4.15 Modifying users in offline station bog file Users can be modified without entering the station bog file passphrase Station bog file passphrase is required to modify users Reset station bog file passphrase Removes reversable client passwords such as email, Niagara Network, etc. Hashed user passwords are not impacted Removes both reversable client passwords and hashed user passwords Understanding the System Passphrase in 4.15 Workbench or Supervisor When Niagara is installed on the engineering or supervisor device for the first time, the user will set the passphrase for that device. NOTE: When setting system passphrases, make sure that you take note of what they are. These should be shared with the owner of the building/site as the passphrase is owned by the device. You can change the system passphrase in the Platform Administration screen. You will be required to enter the current passphrase in order to successfully change it to a new passphrase, highlighting the importance of providing it to the owner of the building/site. JACEs & Remote Niagara Devices The passphrase is set during the commissioning process of the remote device. The remote device's passphrase can also be changed through the Platform Administration view with the same requirements as changing the Supervisor/device's passphrase.   Station Bog File Passphrases In 4.15, you will have the option to encrypt the new station with either the local system passphrase or a custom passphrase in the New Station Wizard. This passphrase is required to unlock the bog file in the user home when configuring encrypted properties as well as when copying this station onto a remote host. New Station Wizard: Note: When selecting the "Use the system passphrase" option, this is the passphrase for the local host (Workbench) Unlocking the station in the User Home: Copying the Station to a remote host with a different passphrase: Understanding how the station passphrase changes when using the Station Copier When a station from a remote host to your local host, the passphrase which is encrypting the data will be the system passphrase of the remote host. Copying a station from your local host to a remote host: For a station that originated on your local host with a passphrase encrypting its sensitive data, once you enter the current station bog file passphrase and successfully copy the station onto the remote device, it will utilize the system passphrase of the remote device when copying from the remote device back to your local host. Copying a station from a remote host to your local host: When a station is copied from the remote host, it will automatically be encrypted with the system passphrase of that remote host.   What do I do if I do not know the system passphrase of the remote host I copied the station from? In the user home,  you are able to reset the passphrase of the station, however, you will lose the encrypted sensitive data including system and user passwords. In this workflow, you have the option to remove all users except for one new super user which you provide the new username and password in the Bog File Passphrase dialog:

Queue Full Exception in Niagara

Issue Encounter Queue Full Exception in context of "Error writing BACnet point" Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series N4 Jace 8000 I/A Series N4 Jace 9000 Niagara Station running as SoftJace or 3rd Party Jace Cause If you notice queue overflow messages in the station dialog, it is essential to know which queue is overflowing. There are many different communications mechanisms in BACnet, and they use different queues. Resolution The canonical reference article is located on Niagara Community: BACnet Tuning Suggestions I have excerpted the following as a Rule of Thumb for the recommended starting configuration: Configure your tuning policies so that write-on-start is not enabled on some of the points - otherwise, the JACE may start with a to-do list that is larger than the queue can handle. The recommended configuration from Tridium is to set BACnet WriteWorker queues to 1.5 times the number of writable points. However, as initial configuration, Product Support has found these values to perform better than the defaults, so change the following values from 1000 to 3000. View the BacnetNetwork Property Sheet Expand Bacnet Comm Expand BACnet Comm -> Server -> Worker and Confirmed Worker Expand BACnet Comm -> Transport Change the various Queue Sizes from 1000 to 3000. Please consult PSS if a change to a value higher than 3000, as that has been found to adversely affect performance.
