How to extract an XIF out of a Lon controller

Issue There may be a situation where the External Interface File (XIF) needs to be extracted out of the controller in order to properly set up the controller in a building automation system.  Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC IA Series, TAC Vista Environment External Interface File (XIF) NodeUtil Loytec XIF Builder Cause These tools will help with the extraction of an XIF file. An XIF file is used to create a Niagara R2 shadow object, a Niagara G3 LMNL file, LonWorks device template, and a SmartStruxure device template.  Resolution The device manufacturer should provide an XIF, and in most cases, a DRF kit as well. The XIF provided by the manufacturer of the controller should be used first but if issues arise it may be required to extract the file from the controller. There are a number of tools available that will create an XIF, but the DRF kit cannot be created by any tool and must be supplied by the manufacturer. This MUST be provided along with the device. The list below covers some of the tools which are available. NodeUtil                          (header: bad,           NVs: ok,                      DMA/File-SCPTs are omitted) Vista's XIF-builder           (header: bad,           NVs: almost ok..,       DMA/File-SCPTs are omitted)  Loytec plugIn                  (does a perfect XIF from a device using Loytec's stack)   NodeUtil is available from the Echelon website (free registration is required) - The NodeUtilLauncher package attached makes it easy to use NodeUtil with Loytec interfaces. Loytec XIF Builder is available from the Loytec website (free registration is required) Using Lonmaker and the XIF Builder. Using NL220 and the XIF Builder. If the uploaded XIF still contains some detailed prompted error, refer to Error displayed when importing a device XIF into SmartStruxure.

MNL-V1RVx, MNL-V2RVx and MNL-V1RVx-2, MNL-V2RVx-2 differences

Issue Are there any functional differences between the following part numbers? MNL-V1RVx vs. MNL-V1RVx-2 MNL-V2RVx vs. MNL-V2RVx-2 Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series Micronet LON VAV controllers Cause The original part numbers MNL-V1RVx and MNL-V2RVx have been replaced with MNL-V1RVx-2 and MNL-V2RVx-2, respectively. The datasheet F-26365 references the original part numbers (MNL-V1RVx and MNL-V2RVx). Resolution There are no functional differences between the original and updated part numbers. The addition of “-2” in the part number signifies a mechanical enhancement to the VAV actuator assembly. This enhancement was made to reduce the operational noise level of the actuator, improving acoustic performance without altering functionality. Refer to datasheet F-26365-8.pdf for more technical specifications.

BACnet MS/TP Bus Communication Troubleshooting Checklist

Issue BACnet MS/TP Bus Communication Troubleshooting Checklist Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series BACnet controllers (MNB-70, MNB-V1, MNB-V2, MNB-300, MNB-1000) on an MS/TP bus. Cause BACnet MS/TP Bus Communication Troubleshooting Checklist Resolution This checklist provides several settings/configurations to review when faced with a communication problem at the controller level. The content was compiled from different resources, summarized, and laid out in an easy-to-use manner so as to provide a quick-reference document. Power Each controller requires 24 VAC from a Class 2 transformer. See the Installation Instructions for each controller, and the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7, Chapter 1, “Power Supply Wiring”. Read-Only Flag Use the WorkPlace Tech Commissioning Tool (WPTCT) to check “Device Properties” of the controller. If the status is “Operational, Read-Only”, the input voltage to the controller may be too low. See the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7, Chapter 1, “Power Supply Wiring”. Due to the short duration of the low-voltage condition required to set the flag, it is unlikely that you will see it when measuring the input voltage with a digital meter, so check the “Device Properties”, and correct the problem as noted on page 28 of the guide, (reduce transformer loading, reduce wire length between transformer and controller, and /or use wire with higher current rating). Diagnostic LEDs The MNB controllers have onboard diagnostic LEDs that are useful in troubleshooting. See the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7, Chapter 3, “Communications Hardware Checkout”, Table: “LED Indications”, for a detailed description of the behavior of the LEDs and their diagnostic uses. Topology It is very helpful to draw the topology of the bus when you start troubleshooting. If there are no repeaters on the bus, the topology must be a daisy-chain, with no tees or stars. MS/TP network wiring to MN-Sx sensors must be run to the sensor, then to the next controller on the bus, in a daisy-chain; no tees or spurs are allowed. Maximum length of a wire segment is 4000 feet. See the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7, Chapter 1, “MicroNet MS/TP Network Wiring”, for details on Communications wiring. Repeaters B-LINK-AC-S, Andover Controls MS/TP Repeater B-LINK-AC-F-S, Andover Controls MS/TP Repeater Fiber See the MicroNet BACnet Smoke Control Systems Manual, F-27419, for details on the use of these wire and fiber repeaters with MNB controllers. See F-27419, Chapter 5, “Approved MS/TP Repeaters”, including the wiring example. Maximum Number of Devices The maximum number of MNB controllers depends on the cable used, and the Baud Rate. See the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7,Chapter 1, Table, “Approved Cable Types”. The MNB controllers are quarter-load devices, so a maximum of 128 or less are allowed on an MS/TP trunk, depending on the cable used. Addressing Avoid duplicate addresses. See the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7, Chapter 1, “Required Configuration”, CAUTION: “Duplicate addresses on an MS/TP network trunk will result in erratic behavior, lost tokens, and disrupted communication. There is no software tool that will identify duplicate addresses on an MS/TP network trunk. Typically, if two controllers are set to the same address, one of the controllers will appear to be missing from the list, and the address shared by the two controllers will intermittently come and go from the list.” Biasing As a requirement of EIA-485 (formerly RS-485) bus topology, an MS/TP network must have a minimum of one set, and a maximum of two sets, of bias resistors in place. The MNB-300, MNB-1000, UNC-520, and ENC-520 have jumpers to enable or disable the bias resistors. See bulletin TB06-09, “RS-485 Bias Resistors and the UNC-520-2 / ENC-520-2”, page 3, for a photo of the bias jumpers on a UNC-520-2. Terminators A 120-Ohm End-of -Line (EOL) resistor is required across the “MS/TP +” and “MS/TP -” terminals at each controller at the end of a wire segment. The MNB-1000 and MNB-300 are equipped with a jumper-selectable end-of-line (EOL) termination resistor. The default position for the EOL jumper is “EOL termination not present.” See the MicroNet BACnet Smoke Control Systems Manual, F-27419, Chapter 5, “Approved MS/TP Repeaters”, Figure titled “UL 864 Listed MS/TP Repeater and Isolation”, Note 4, for an important exception, requiring external EOL for the MNB-300 and MNB-1000, when used on a bus with an approved repeater. If a UNC-520-2, ENC-520, MNB-V1 or MNB-V2 is installed at the end of the trunk, install a discrete 120 Ohm EOL resistor, part number EMSC-546, or equivalent. Cable Use of the proper cable is critical to the communications performance of the networked controllers. See the MicroNet BACnet Wiring, Networking, and Best Practices Guide, F-27360-7,Chapter 1, Table, “Approved Cable Types” for a list of recommended cable types. As shown in the table, cable selection affects both the maximum number of controllers allowed on the trunk, and the maximum baud rate. WorkPlace Tech Interface The MNB-ROAM-IA is the recommended communications converter for connecting WorkPlaceTech, including the WPT Commissioning and Flow Balance Tools, to an MS/TP trunk. It is supported in versions 5.7.1 and later. A converter that had been recommended earlier, the B & B Electronics model USOPTL4, was found not to operate reliably at speeds above 38.4 K baud. (See Direct MS-TP Connection with B & B Electronics Converters (Revised) - TB08-02-02 for details). The MNB-ROAM-IA supports Bluetooth wireless connection between WorkPlace Tech suite and the MS/TP network, for distances up to about 40 feet. One external Bluetooth adapter has been tested and approved - the Belkin USB adapter. (See Supported models of Bluetooth adapters with WorkPlace Tech for details). A problem we have seen with some MNB-ROAM-IAs is when trying to add Bluetooth device, the Bluetooth Wizard identifies it as "Serial Port Device, Unknown: Major(0), Minor(0)" instead of "tac-RoamIA:xxxxxxxx" where xxxxxxx is the serial number. There is no way for WPT to use the ROAM-IA if the computer can’t pair with it. Currently, there is no known solution, other than replacing the device. Divide and Conquer This is a strategy for dividing a bus into smaller sections in order to isolate a controller or section of bus that might be causing communication problems. The general idea is to divide the bus in half, and see if communications are possible from one end to the other end. If not, divide each half again, and continue until the problem(s) are found. Reading the Serial Number from a Mifare card

Issue How can Continuum be setup to read the 32 bit serial number from a Mifare smart card for use in access control? Product Line Andover Continuum Environment Using iClass serial number readers: R10, R15, R30, R40, RK40 Custom Wiegand, AccessFormat array Custom Format Cause Mifare smart cards that have been provided and programmed by others may not have the keys available to allow a reader to access the data on the card. Without sending the cards away for re-programming how can the card still be used for access control. Resolution The HID iClass readers (R10, R15, R30, R40, RK40) have the ability to read the 32 bit serial number from a Mifare Smart card. These readers will output a single 32 bit Wiegand string representing the card serial number. To use this on Continuum: Create a numeric point called "AccessFormat" and define it as a manual array with 19 entries. Create a Plain English program in the controller to fill up the array with values as per the Mifare Serial Number spreadsheet. In the door configuration select "Custom Format" and ensure one of the 4 site codes is set to 0. Swipe the card at the reader and open a list view of Events, this will show the card number as the serial number from the card. Create a new Person with card type Custom Wiegand, Site code 0 and set the Card number to the serial number as read in the list view. This may be a 9 or 10 digit number. Notes: If using card numbers in Plain English Programs or displaying in Pinpoint Graphics, you will be restricted to using a maximum of 6 digit numbers (maximum card number being 999,999). See Loss of resolution on metering points when the number is 7 digits or longer for details on this restriction. The old style Personnel editor will not allow the entry of site codes of 0. Use Personnel Manager or set attributes in List Views of Personnel.

How to set the Enterprise Server IP address

Issue How to change the IP address in the EC/ES software when it is grayed out. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Central (EC) and Enterprise Server (ES) Building Operation WorkStation Cause The EC/ES IP address is grayed out in the Network Tab of the Server Properties and cannot be changed.  This setting is only used to view the IP address that the server is currently using - typically the IP of the network interface card of the PC running this.  To change this setting it must be done through the Communications TAB of the server as detailed in the resolution.  Resolution EcoStruxure Building Operation 2.0 and above EBO 2.0 and above now supports multiple NIC configurations, see 2.0.1 Release Notes for details, in particular, the following note.   Note: That from 2.0 the server will still listen for incoming requests on all network adapters so this setting is only used for choosing which communication settings that the server will use to communicate with child servers. This allows other IP protocols on different networks, e.g. BACnet, Modbus, etc. to communicate with the Server.    It is now possible to select which network adapter the Enterprise Central and the Enterprise Server use.  See the following WebHelp Topic Configuring Network Interface Card for an Enterprise Server or for an Enterprise Central StruxureWare Building Operation 1.9 and below  When the IP address of the computer changes the ES will automatically update the "IP/DNS Address" in the Properties, Network tab. If your computer has multiple network connections, ensure that the Network Interface Card (NIC) to be used for the SmartStruxure network is set to be at the top of the list in the Adapters and Bindings. Go to the computer's Control Panel > Network Connections Select "Advanced, Advanced Settings... " from the menu. In the "Connections:" section, select the Network Connection to be used and press the up arrow to move it to the top of the list. For Windows 7 / Server 2008 See the following link on how to change the order of protocol bindings: How to change the network connection priority in Windows 7 For Windows 8 and beyond, please refer to Adapter priority setting unavailable in Windows 10 In addition to the ES Network Properties, there is also the Communication tab in the ES that lists all of the Server IP addresses in the system. If these need to be changed this can be done by selecting the server and clicking on the "Show/ Hide Communication settings" button circled in red below.

Hotfix file signature validation error during hotfix installation

Issue During installation of hotfix for EBO you get a "Hotfix file signature validation" error saying that Device Administrator cannot verify the issuer of the file signature's certificate.   In older versions of Device Administrator you might get an alternative error message "Invalid hotfix file" saying that the file does not have a valid Schneider signature. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Automation Server Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled Device Administrator Offline system Version 3.1 and later Cause EBO hotfixes for SmartX Server are signed with a certificate to ensure that only valid files can be used. This certificate must be validated before you can use a new PC to install a hotfix. If the PC has not had any internet connection while previously installing a hotfix or does not have an internet connection, the certificate cannot be validated and hotfix installation therefore fails. Resolution There are two solutions Solution 1 Connect your PC to the Internet and install the hotfix on a SmartX Server. The certificate is validated, and the PC can subsequently be used to install hotfixes on other SmartX Servers, even if you are offline. Solution 2 You can manually import certificates and CRL (Certificate Revocation List) Download and save the following files: http://s1.symcb.com/pca3-g5.crl http://sv.symcb.com/sv.crl If the above URL's are blocked by your browser please download them here or the attached ZIP file.  Start a command prompt (cmd.exe) as administrator. Browse to the folder where the files from step 1 are stored. Run the following commands: CertUtil -AddStore CA pca3-g5.crl CertUtil -AddStore CA sv.crl Export host, intermediate, and root certificates from the hotfix file. Install the 3 certificates with the default selection. Restart Device Administrator and install the hotfix. Troubleshooting EBO license violation issues

Issue  EBO can have license violation bar without a known reason. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Enterprise Central Building Operation Automation Server Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled Building Operation Edge Server - Standard Cause License enforcement is the process of checking whether a software application has a valid license available to it at runtime. If you do not have enough licenses, a license violation occurs. This is accomplished by a license violation bar in WorkStation and WebStation.   Firstly, the license violation will be yellow, and it can be hidden for 8 hours. You can use Hide to hide the License Violation bar for 7 days. After 7 days, the Hide function is disabled. After 30 days, the bar turns red. Resolution Below information can be collected to help in troubleshooting: Refer to the document Part Number Summary and Hardware Software Matrix for software and features that need licenses and note that some feature licenses can be inherited from parent server to child servers. Get a screenshot of the License information page in the control panel, make sure to have all content in license information page are shown in the screenshots, ex child servers' status. It can tell which feature needs a license or which child server needs a license, refer to License Information Get the License Diagnostics, and entitlement certificates to make sure that required licenses are activated. Jace 8000 Serial Port Issue

Issue There are missing serial ports (COM ports) when viewing the 'SerialPortService' under 'PlatformServices' in a station. Some or all COM ports will be missing. Local serial ports and/or serial ports of the attached modules do not function. Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series AX Jace 8000 Cause This could show up for several reasons. This was found during an upgrade to Niagara 4.2. It was also experienced when converting a Jace8000 running N4.2 (or lower N4 version) to AX. This can occur with a new out of the box J8000 to AX conversion if you do not first commission the Jace8000 to Niagara 4.4 or above before converting to AX. All of these problems are due to older version USBbinary files not being properly updated during commissioning. The LON option module (side-car) might stop communicating on the LON trunk due to the same binary file issue. Resolution This can be fixed via serial shell; either by direct connecting with a mini-USB cable or via ssh after it is enabled from the Platform Administration view. It is recommended that PuTTY.exe be downloaded and used as the terminal program to access the shell. The directions below are CASE-sensitive and must be entered exactly as shown. We recommend that you do not type these commands, but rather use copy-and-paste to avoid typographical errors. This is especially true of the usbSerialNumber itself -- it is case-SENSITIVE. By default, PuTTY.exe uses mouse-left-click-drag-and-highlight as an automatic shortcut for copy. Mouse-right-click is the automatic shortcut for paste. Once logged in type: Display the USB serial number(s) sh [hit enter] $ ls /etc/usb [this will display the USB serial number(s), if nothing displays see the note* at the bottom] 85091090FPGGS41 [this is an example serial number] Display the available binary files $ ls -Rp /sys/images/usb [this will display the available binary files] /sys/images/usb/applet-flash-sam4s16.bin* /sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2404/Tridium232-1_r03.bin* /sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2425/Tridium485-2_r04.bin* Note: You could also see '_r05' instead of '_r04'. If this is your result, make sure to update using the line below. /sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2425/Tridium485-2_r05.bin* The USB ports unavailable is due to the 'Tridium485-2_r04.bin' (or Tridium485-2_r05.bin) file was not written to the USB serial number file. This can be corrected by updating the USB serial number file with the correct binary file using the statement below. Make sure to replace the X in the statement with the highest number binary found in 'STEP 2' above. $ echo /sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2425/Tridium485-2_r0X.bin > /etc/usb/<usbSerialNumber> Update the binary file Using the example serial number and USB binary file found in STEP 2: $ echo /sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2425/Tridium485-2_r05.bin > /etc/usb/85091090FPGGS41 Make sure to use the serial number found when 'ls /etc/usb' was called. If there is more than one serial number found, write the command multiple times, once for each serial number found. Also, make sure to use the highest USB binary file number found. Currently r05 is the highest number. If '_r05' is returned as the available USB binary file, make sure to use '_r05' when updating the USB serial number. After a reboot, check the SerialPortService to confirm the ports are restored. *Note: if no usb serial number was found using ls /etc/usb another method would be to call for the slog by typing: $ sloginfo An error would have been logged here during the last startup and will display the serial number; example output: Oct 10 13:42:06 1 6 0 serusb_is_device_supported: Device 2 on bus 0 unrecognized. Using CDC-ACM Class Oct 10 13:42:07 4 11111 0 error opening /etc/usb/85091090FPGGS41 rc=-1 In addition to the symptoms listed above, the inability to communicate with the LON option module may cause the any of the following messages in the Serial Shell and/or the Platform Administration System Logs: error opening /etc/usb/<serial number here> rc=-1 U50Read returned unknown rc = 8!!! io_write failed ldvRC=7, length=<various numbers of bytes> The Station will most likely show that the LON network is up, but the LON devices are down. The device fault cause may show "unable to write" or something similar.

Preparing and importing a signed CA certificate

Issue There is no information on how to create and prepare signed certificates for import in Building Operation. PEM file format has to be used. If another format is used or the certificate files are not correct, you get a message like this when importing SAXParseException: Reference to invalid character number in line X column Y Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Certificates Cause There is no information on how to create signed certificates in Building Operation. Resolution Make sure that when preparing the pfx file that the full chain of trust is included in the pfx file. You have various options when preparing a pfx certificate export file, and the private keys and chain of trust are options that must be selected. Otherwise, you won't extract the intermediate certificate or the private key if not included. Complete a Certificate Request and then request a certificate in PEM format in a .pfx file "container".  Extract the CA certificate, Intermediate certificate, and private key using the following OpenSSL commands. After executing each command, enter the password if prompted. Make sure you reference the right pfx file. Below filename.pfx is used as an example Make sure you enter the commands manually and do not copy/paste from this article Download OpenSSL tool here or use OpenSSL installed with EBO  openssl pkcs12 -in filename.pfx -out host.pem -nodes -clcerts -nokeys openssl pkcs12 -in filename.pfx -out inter.pem -nodes -cacerts -nokeys openssl pkcs12 -in filename.pfx -out privkey.prv -nodes -nocerts The three files produced must then be parsed of any characters that aren't in the part of the certificate/key and in PEM format (or PRV if private key) - basically all the characters before "-----Begin Certificate-----" or after "-----End Certificate-----". Ensure each file ends with a blank line and that a blank line separates each section. This can be done in any text editor; however, this example uses Notepad++ with the "Show All Characters" button selected.  Import the files into SBO using the certificate manager in the Control panel. File type conversion If the host and intermediate certificate are in crt, cer or der format, you can convert them to pem format using the following method/command: openssl x509 -outform der -in certificate.cer -out certificate.der openssl x509 -inform der -in certificate.der -out certificate.pem Replace "certificate.cer" with the name of your file Determining certificate file type To determine which filetype a given certificate file has (PEM, DER, or pkcs12/pfx), you can use the following commands (replace "cert.crt" with the name of your file). A valid output will confirm the file type. PEM openssl x509 -in cert.crt -text DER openssl x509 -in cert.crt -inform DER -text pkcs12/pfx openssl pkcs12 -in cert.crt -info

Using IAC 420 as a Replacement for Obsolete IAC 400 Controllers

Issue A failed IAC 400 controller requires replacement, but only an IAC 420 is available. This article provides guidance on using the IAC 420 as a substitute, including key differences and configuration considerations. Product Line Satchwell MicroNet, Satchwell Sigma Environment IAC 400 IAC 420 Cause The IAC 400 controller is no longer manufactured or supported, making direct replacements unavailable. In legacy systems, the IAC 420 may be the only remaining compatible controller on hand, despite also being obsolete. However, differences in hardware and configuration between the two models can lead to confusion or improper operation if not addressed. Resolution Key Differences Between IAC 400 and IAC 420 Feature IAC 400 IAC 420 Input Types 3 x Temperature Inputs 2 x Analogue Inputs 1 x Digital Input 6 x Universal Inputs Communication Cable Screening Terminal 3 used for earthing the communication cable screen Screen must be connected to a good earth, not to Terminal 3 Tables & Offsets Specific to IAC 400 input types Different due to universal inputs—review updated tables and offsets ⚠️ Important: Because the IAC 420 uses universal inputs, existing configurations from the IAC 400 will not directly transfer. You must update the input tables and offsets accordingly. Refer to the document: IAC Controllers – Tables and Offsets for detailed guidance. Wiring Information IAC 400 Wiring Details: Download IAC400A.pdf IAC 420 Wiring Details: Download IAC 420 - DS2801A-1205.pdf Recommendations Compatibility Check: Ensure the IAC 420’s universal inputs can be configured to replicate the IAC 400’s original input types. Documentation Review: Carefully consult wiring diagrams and configuration tables to avoid miswiring or misconfiguration. Testing: After installation, verify all inputs and outputs function as expected. Additional Notes Both the IAC 400 and IAC 420 are obsolete. For long-term reliability, consider migrating to a supported controller platform within the EcoStruxure Building Operation suite.

BACnet Interface polling interval settings and usage

Issue How are the 'Advanced Polling Configuration' settings under the BACnet interface to be used? Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Enterprise Server (ES) Automation Server (AS) Cause These settings can be used to reduce traffic on the BACnet networks that can overload both the EBO server as well as the devices being polled. Resolution The settings are used to specify an amount of time (in milliseconds) that the server should wait after completing a polling cycle on the applicable BACnet network before starting the next cycle. A polling cycle is the set of point being polled on a particular network interface. For example, lets assume that the Minimum polling interval for MSTPA network has been set to 1000 ms, if you are polling 30 points on MSTP port A then the BACnet plug in will do synchronous ReadProperty requests to poll each of the 30 points one at a time. Once the 30 points are polled, (one polling cycle) the BACnet plug-in will delay 1000ms before polling the 30 points again. (next polling cycle) NOTE: The settings apply to polling ONLY and do not affect communications done via change of value (COV) To find a proper value to use, it is recommended that you start with 1000 ms and then adjust the value up or down based on polling performance. If the polled values update fast enough, increase the minimum polling interval to reduce CPU usage. If the polled values become too sluggish, reduce the minimum polling interval until performance returns to satisfactory levels. It may take some trial and error to find the optimum balance.

Using WireShark to analyse communications on an Ethernet network

Issue General use of the Wireshark program. Product Line Access Expert, Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, Pelco, Satchwell MicroNet, Satchwell Sigma, TAC IA Series, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Ethernet Networks Cause General Information on using WireShark. Resolution Wireshark is an Ethernet packet analysis programme, Which can be downloaded from: Latest version available from Wireshark Locally stored version 1.0.9 Installing Wireshark If necessary, unzip the WireShark executable file to a suitable location on the PC/Laptop you wish the programme to be installed on. Run the executable file and follow the on-screen instructions. Rules for capturing LAN traffic using Wireshark: Do not use a switch or router to connect the LAN capture PC to the network as these will filter important network activity that you will need to see. You will want to capture everything that is passing over the network at the point of concern. Usually, this means tapping into the ethernet at the Controller or controllers, that is having an issue. midBit-Technologies-LLC-10-100 is an example of a device that can be used to easily tap into the network to take the capture. The monitoring PC must see all traffic from the controller's point of view. The monitoring PC can be connected in either two ways: Connected to the network at the controller The customers IT department can mirror all the network traffic from the controllers port to another port the PC can be connected to. If connected to the network at the controllers, the connection must be made through a true ethernet hub. A hub will not selectively filter important network traffic as a switch or a router will do. More information on what a "true ethernet hub" can be found at http://wiki.wireshark.org/HubReference There are however some switches that feature port mirroring, please see How to Configure a NETGEAR Prosafe Plus Switch for Mirroring. If connected to a mirrored port, the port must mirror 100% of the network traffic to and from the controller. No filtering should be done. Once a complete capture file has been obtained it can be filtered after the fact using WireShark or EtherReal. Using Wireshark Run WireShark Start a trace by choosing the "Capture" menu and then select "Interfaces" Choose the appropriate interface. Generally, this can be identified by its IP Address, but if not, then the packets increasing are an indication. Press the "Start" button. The trace will start and will be similar to the following screenshot. After an appropriate time, the trace can be stopped by selecting "Capture" menu and "Stop" To save the capture file, choose "File" menu and "Save As".
