Modbus communication, Intermittent or unstable after upgrading

Issue 3rd party Modbus RTU devices go offline or have unstable value transfer after upgrading to version 1.7.1 or above Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Detected in version 1.7.1 or above. Automation Server Modbus RTU (RS485) interface Cause The performance of the Modbus RTU interface was improved in version 1.6 and further in version 1.7. This improved performance can make the Modbus Master in SmartStruxure too fast for some third party Modbus RTU devices, and they may be unable to handle the faster polling rates the newer software can provide. Resolution In the Modbus Master Network there are various settings that can be changed to allow it to compensate for slower devices. The settings in this screen shot shows example settings that may be suitable for slower devices or problem networks.   Increasing the Transmit Guard bits from the default of 2 allows more time after one packet before the next packet will start transmitting on the bus. This is useful both for slow responding devices, devices that take longer to turn off their Transmit driver as well as networks that have a high capacitance due to poor cable selection. The Receive timeout (ms) is the length of time the master will wait to receive a response. Decreasing this from the default of 2000 mS (2 Seconds) can often improve network communications, by not waiting too long for a device that may not be responding or offline will improve the overall network operation. By default there is 0 delay between polling the points, by introducing a delay in the Point Poll Delay (ms)  it allows slower devices to handle the data polls from the interface. This is a key setting for slower devices that cannot keep up with the faster polling from the latest Automation Servers and most 3rd party devices will require a value greater than 0. The Silence Characters do not usually need changing in an upgrade, but they can be used to help with poor installations where there is high capacitance in the cabling or poor grounding, this can often be used with lower baud rates on problem sites. The default Poll Duty Cycle is usually appropriate for most installations and is not affected by the upgrades, but can be adjusted if required to match 3rd party devices. In V3.x the same settings apply and the screenshot now looks like this:

BACnet device Instance Number (Instance ID) in EcoStruxure Building Operation

Issue Finding the rules governing the BACnet device Instance ID in EBO and learning to change it if required. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled  Cause The BACnet device Instance ID must be unique within a BACnet system. There may be a need to find out or change the device Instance ID to ensure there are not duplicates.  Resolution When a BACnet Interface is added to an SmartX server, AS or ES, the Server will become a BACnet device and it will have an Instance ID (automatically generated or manually assigned).  To check an ES or AS BACnet device instance ID go to the properties of the BACnet Interface and then the Advanced tab. The device instance ID is defined as the Object ID. To check other BACnet device, SmartX controller or 3rd party BACnet device, go to the properties of the BACnet Device and then the Advanced tab. The device instance ID once again is defined as the Object ID.  No 2 BACnet devices in any system may have the same Instance ID/Object ID. The valid range of Instance Numbers for a BACnet device is 0 to 4194302.   Change BACnet Device ID: You can change BACnet device IDs for SmartX Server or Controller when there is a conflict with another BACnet device, move controller or in those situations where you need to change the originally selected value for some local or site-specific reason. In EBO V3.2.3 or higher (except V3.3), it is possible to change BACnet Device ID of an SmartX server (ES, AS-P or AS-B), as explained in: Changing the BACnet Device ID in a SmartX Server To change SmartX IP Controller BACnet device ID, follow: Changing a BACnet/IP Device ID

How to perform the online activation of an embedded license at EBO 2022

Issue Users may want to know how to perform the online activation of an embedded license  Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Automation Server Premium (AS-P) Building Operation Automation Server Bundled (AS-B) Cause From Building Operation 2022, the Automation Server (Classic/Secure boot AS-B or AS-P) and features like Smart Drivers, SNMP notifications, Personalized dashboards, TimescaleDB, MQTT Publish/Subscribe, Modbus, Serial MS/TP, ES Connection, Server I/O, Field Devices, SAML Authentication, Zoning, and BACnet IP require a license. Customers need to know how to activate their embedded licenses to enable these features. Resolution This video will demonstrate how to Find the list of supported features by each activation ID. Activate an embedded license on an Automation Server Verify the embedded license status via the Device Administrator, Workstation, and the Flexnet operation license portal. Notes Check each activation ID's supported features using the part number or license description through the Features and Licensed Products Table.  The Flexnet operation license portal is a public FlexNet Login (flexnetoperations.com) accessible from anywhere with an Internet connection.  The Automation Server and the PC running the Device Administrator must have outbound connectivity to the license activation server over the Internet. Check the resolution section of this article Could not establish contact with License Server using SmartX Server - Communities to verify if the Automation Server has access to the Flexnet license activation server. For troubleshooting, refer to Embedded license activation fails. Web helps:  Assigning Licenses and Activating Licenses Online. An Embedded DEMO license is available for temporary use during project engineering and installation until you know each device's specific licensing needs. Please visit How to activate a demo license on an Automation Server at EBO 2022. If the Automation Server does not have access to the Flexnet license activation server (no Internet connection), you can perform the steps in the following article Offline activation of embedded licenses.  Please take note that starting from Building Operation 2023 version 5.0.3 and higher, Automation Servers are no longer required to be connected to the Internet. The Device Administrator can access the internet and manage communication and license activation for the 'offline' Automation Servers.   A shorter version of the Online Activation of Embedded Licenses for Automation Servers-Digital Job Book (nampss.com). is available on the NAM PSS site. (Note: Registration for access to this site may be required.)

BBMD and BBDT Enterprise Server or Automation Server

Issue BBMD and BBDT Enterprise Server or Automation Server Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server and Automation Server BBMD (BACnet Broadcast Management Device) IP subnet, IP router  Cause Clarification for both BACnet Broadcast Management Device (BBMD) and BACnet Broadcast Device Table (BBDT) when used within Building Operation servers. Resolution A BBMD is needed when communicating to BACnet devices on another IP segment/subnet (across IP routers). One BBMD is required per subnet; this is because IP routers block broadcast packets and BACnet uses broadcast packets to initiate and maintain communications.  Continuum CyberStation (below) or bCX4 can act as a BBMD.     A BBMD can be created in a Building Operation Enterprise Server or Automation Server.    The BBMD on the other subnet should be as below   Now all the BACnet devices should be visible on both subnets Notes No more than a single BBMD should be created on each subnet for each IP port used. Additional information about BBMDs is available on WebHelp The Teach and Learn commands are useful for larger networks with multiple BBMDs

Differences between EcoStruxure Energy Expert and EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert

Issue There can be confusion on the differences between EcoStruxure Energy Expert (formerly Power Manager) and EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME)  Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, Other Environment EcoStruxure Building Operation  EcoStruxure Energy Expert (formerly Power Manager) EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert Cause Power Monitoring Expert (PME) is a long-established product in the Schneider Power (EMS) offer and so its place in the market is well known and its support path is very clear. Energy Expert is a much newer offering that intentionally sits nearer to EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO) in the BMS community, while still remaining an EMS product and so its place in the market and support path is more easily confused. Resolution Definitions   EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME) Schneider Electric's supervisory software dedicated to power monitoring that enables you to maximize operational efficiency, optimize your power distribution system, and improve bottom-line performance   EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO)  Schneider Electric's premier building management system (BMS) providing integrated monitoring, control, and management of energy, lighting, HVAC, and fire safety.   EcoStruxure Energy Expert (EE)                                                    Designed to offer Power Monitoring Expert (PME) features to new and existing EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO) projects, giving extra capabilities to manage power utilization in a BMS environment.   It utilizes EcoStruxure Web Services (EWS) to be able it to share data between the two EcoStruxure software platforms. (EBO and EE) and applications such as the ETL Tool and the Integration Utility in the integration process.   EcoStruxure Web Services (EWS) The Schneider Electric standard for sharing data among various Schneider software platforms to facilitate the creation of EcoStruxure Solutions. Based on conventional Web Services technology (SOAP, WSDL)   ETL Tool The function of the ETL is to extract select historical data (Trend logs) from EBO, and load that data into the Energy Expert SQL database for use in Dashboard and Reports etc.   Integration Utility The function of the Integration Utility is to export Energy Expert Dashboards, Reports and Alarms for import into EBO to enhance its Power Offer to the customer   Product Support Path: PME, Energy Expert, ETL and the Integration Utility are are all fundamentally Power Products and so should always be raised through your local Product Support Team (via your Customer Care Center (CCC)) under an EMS commercial reference. However in cases where an Energy Expert project needs specific assistance with the EBO side of the integration then a BMS commercial reference should be used instead.

SQL error the transaction log for the database 'tempdb' is full.

Issue SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The transaction log for database 'tempdb' is full. To find out why space int he log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases Product Line Andover Continuum Environment SQL Server Cause Low disk space or unreasonably low maximum size for tempdb database growth. Resolution SQL Server allocates a database called tempdb, primarily for worktable / #temp table usage. Sometimes, you will encounter a transaction log full error   Causes    Usually, tempdb fills up when you are low on disk space, or when you have set an unreasonably low maximum size for database growth.    Many people think that tempdb is only used for #temp tables. When in fact, you can easily fill up tempdb without ever creating a single temp table. Some other scenarios that can cause tempdb to fill up:  any sorting that requires more memory than has been allocated to SQL Server will be forced to do its work in tempdb;    if the sorting requires more space than you have allocated to tempdb, one of the above errors will occur;    DBCC CheckDB('any database') will perform its work in tempdb -- on larger databases, this can consume quite a bit of space;    DBCC DBREINDEX or similar DBCC commands with 'Sort in tempdb' option set will also potentially fill up tempdb;    large resultsets involving unions, order by / group by, cartesian joins, outer joins, cursors, temp tables, table variables, and hashing can often require help from tempdb;    any transactions left uncommitted and not rolled back can leave objects orphaned in tempdb;    use of an ODBC DSN with the option 'create temporary stored procedures' set can leave objects there for the life of the connection.   Short-term fix    Restarting SQL Server will re-create tempdb from scratch, and it will return to its usually allocated size. In and of itself, this solution is only effective in the very short term; assumedly, the application and/or T-SQL code which caused tempdb to grow once, will likely cause it to grow again.      Long-term prevention    Here are some suggestions for maintaining a healthy tempdb:  Make sure that tempdb is set to autogrow -- do *NOT* set a maximum size for tempdb. If the current drive is too full to allow autogrow events, then buy a bigger drive, or add files to tempdb on another device (using ALTER DATABASE) and allow those files to autogrow. You will need at least one data file and at least one log file in order to avoid this problem from halting your system in the future.

Unable to trust self signed certificate - "Bad server certificate" shown in "Issued by"

Issue When attempting to trust a self signed certificate, the option to permanently trust the certificate is not enabled. When viewing the certificate, you see the message "Bad server certificate" in the field "Issued by" Refer to WebHelp Article 10326 for further information about certificate types Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Certificates Cause There can be various reasons why a certificate can not be trusted, and many or these are described in SSL Certificates - Security Certificate Risk warning logging in to WorkStation or WebStation using HTTPS. In this specific case where you see the message "Bad server certificate", the cause is that the certificate is not deemed trustworthy. First of all, you need to check what the reason behind the certificate being flagged as bad is. This is easiest done by examining the "CRL Distribution Points" property of the certificate, to determine which service is checking or affecting the certificate. In this example, we can see that it is ZScaler (a proxy server provider) is listed, so the reason why the certificate is deemed as bad, is most likely because the certificate is self signed, and that is not accepted by the company policy. If disabling the usage of a proxy server on the PC you are working on allows you to trust the certificate, you can confirm that it is an issue with the proxy server not allowing the self signed certificate. For more information about how e.g. ZScaler handles certificates, refer to the How does ZScaler protect SSL traffic article. Resolution Either reconfigure the proxy to allow the self signed certificate, or (the better option) get a proper CA signed certificate. For more information about preparing and importing a CA signed certificate, refer to Preparing and importing a signed CA certificate.

Resolution First download and run TCP View. With TCP View running, sort the list by the Local Port and find all devices that are talking on port 4444. If the automation servers are in a state of LISTENING then rules must be created to allow communication. Copy the file path of SE.EnterpriseServer.exe in order to create the rules. This can be found by right clicking on one of the SE.EnterpriseServer.exe process > Process Properties... (C:\Program Files\Schneider Electric\StruxureWare 1.2\Enterprise Server\bin\SE.EnterpriseServer.exe) If the automation servers are in the state of ESTABLISHED, then take a look at Binding between ES and AS or two AS shows Unresolved and "Communication Failed" Alarm occurs when Adding an AS. Click on Windows Firewall. Click on "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall" on the left hand side of the window. Find "StruxureWare Building Operation" in the list of programs and make sure Home/Work and Public networks are selected.  Note: If you do not have permission rights to make changes in this area of Windows, move on to the next section where you can set up inbound and outbound firewall rules.   Creating Inbound and Outbound Windows Firewall Rules Go to Start > Control Panel.  Click on Windows Firewall. Click "Advanced settings" on the left side of the window. Select Inbound Rules on the left side of the window and then click New Rule... on the right side of the window. On the first screen of the New Rule Wizard, choose Program. Click Next. In "This program path:" either browse to SE.EnterpriseServer.exe or paste the file path that was copied earlier from the TCP View into the box. Click Next. Select the option to "Allow the connection". Click Next. Leave Domain, Private, and Public checked unless otherwise desired. Click Next. Name the rule StruxureWare. Click Finish. Select Outbound Rules on the left side of the window and then click New Rule... on the right side of the window. Follow steps 5 through 9 to create the Outbound Rule. Note that the SBO Firewall Config tool on the community can be used to automatically create the required firewall rules.

BACnet MSTP Capture Application

Issue BACnet MSTP Capture Application Product Line Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC IA Series, TAC Vista Environment Any Bacnet MSTP Network Cause The BACnet MSTP capture application provides the ability to analyze data communications between devices anytime issues are suspected on the network. Resolution Download the latest version. Browse to Steve Karg's  BACnet Protocol Stack - Browse /bacnet-tools at SourceForge.net Select the version folder Select bacnet-tools-[n.n.n].zip file to download it From the zip file, extract mstpcap.exe Now you can use it via command prompt as described below or install it in C:\Program Files\Wireshark\extcap if want to use with modern Wireshark version.   To capture data follow these steps: Unzip file Open command prompt with window pointing at location of mstpcap.exe file.  For example:  c:\MSTP Tool> Daisy chain RS-485 adapter to trunk or connect Roam I/A to jack on MNB device. Command syntax is as follows:  mstpcap comx baudrate# do not type baudrate just speed. Control C to stop Example: If Using Roam I/A it requires highest baudrate available on the interface. ROAM I/A Serial port mstpcap comx 115200 If using Roam I/A Bluetooth mstpcap comx 76800 If using an RS-485 adapter it will not support 76,800. This is a PC hardware limitation not a software limitation for further information or instructions on how to use baudrate 76,800 consult text file titled mstpcap.txt or Steve Karg's website: http://steve.kargs.net/bacnet/wireshark-and-bacnet-mstp .  Example: mstpcap comx baudrate speed The capture file can be analyzed with WireShark Protocol Analyzer.  WireShark software is available at: http://www.wireshark.org

BACnet Interface - Contains Unresolved BACnet Reference

Issue The BACnet Interface Contains a Yellow Exclamation Icon and when you hover over to read the tooltip it states, “Contains Unresolved BACnet Reference”. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment EcoStruxure Building Operation Building Operation Multi-Purpose Controller Building Operation Multi-purpose VAV Building Operation Room Controller Building Operation IP-IO Cause There is a reference misconfiguration within the “Time Synchronization Recipients” under the BACnet Interface. Resolution Select and highlight the BACnet Interface then select the Time Synchronization Recipients TAB Compare the list Names with the list to the left under the IP Network Tree. In this example, we can see that MPV-9A is not a controller within my database under the IP Network_2. Highlight/Select the controller under Time Synchronization recipients and edit the details by clicking on the pencil icon. Within the Time Synchronization Recipient screen, we want to adjust this device to match the ACTUAL device located under our IP Network_2 named MP-9A_Roof. Click on the “three dots|ellipsis “to browse to the correct Recipient device identifier. In this example: Select the BACnet Interface > IP Network_2 > MPV-9A_Roof as this is the correct path for this device. At this point, we have the correct path under the Recipient device object reference. Adjust the Recipient name to match the BACnet name you configured for that device. In this example, it was set to MPV-9A_Roof. TIP: Click the BACnet button to fill in the recipient name field with the BACnet name of the device referenced in the recipient device object reference field. Click OK. If this is the only device you need to modify then you can click the SAVE icon. If you have more devices to adjust, then you will repeat the process until you're done with all the devices. You have now resolved the reference errors against the BACnet Interface.

What are termination resistors and why use them?

Issue What are termination (end of line) resistors and why use them? A LAN of any type has a node or two somewhere in the middle having problems but the rest seem stable Product Line TAC INET Environment I/NET Site Controller LAN 7808 Repeater Cause Termination resistors (also called clamping or end-of line resistors) are to be installed between lan+ and lan -, not to ground. Their purpose is to prevent the characteristic impedance of the wire from increasing to infinity at the end of the cable. Resolution Since most wire's characteristic impedance is between 80 and 150 ohms, use 100 to 120 ohms on an unbiased controller or host lan. This will "clamp" reflections from the end of the wire which are seen as noise by the controllers. If a 7808 repeater is used, it requires bias. Using 100 ohm termination resistors would kill that lan's communication; therefore, use 620 ohms instead. As cheap as resistors are and as easy as this installation is, they can only help. Typically they help more on a longer LAN, so anything longer than 1000 feet (about 300 meters) should definitely have terminations.
