JACE-8000 Serial Ports Inaccessible After Upgrade to N4.9 and Newer

Issue Users who clean-dist or factory restore JACE-8000 to Niagara version 4.1 risk losing the serial ports.   Product Line TAC IA Series Environment I/A Series N4 Jace 8000 Cause Due to an old defect (fixed in Niagara 4.2 update 2; 4.2.36.38), a programmable device that controls the serial port may be left in an erased state during firmware programming. If this happens, serial ports (COM ports) will be missing when viewing the Serial Port Service under Platform Services in a station. This continues to be an issue for customers who routinely clean-dist or factory reset to Niagara 4.1 on upgrade scenarios. It is not necessary to clean-dist or factory reset when upgrading JACE-8000. If you are advised to do so, it is recommended that you use the 4.9u1 clean dist rather than the 4.1 version one, to avoid being affected by the old defect.  Resolution When the JACE-8000 is loaded with Niagara 4.14u2 (or newer) the issue will be automatically detected and fixed on boot. However, when a serial expansion module has been erased, the software cannot distinguish between an RS-232 expansion module versus an RS-485 expansion module. The following messaging will appear in serial shell (and system logs) when the JACE is booting (it will continue booting):   Starting USB-0 and USB-1 Host controllers... Started USB-0 and USB-1 Host controllers get_ctrlperms: ctrlperms set to 644 Check for usb firmware updates Re-creating firmware info file in /etc/usb ERROR: Expansion module info file /etc/usb/350130901TF9S81 is empty, cannot reprogram or start serial ports        1) To populate the info file with path to appropriate firmware, execute one of following at console command line:               For RS-485 expansion module: echo "/sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2425/Tridium485-2_r01" > /etc/usb/350130901TF9S81               For RS-232 expansion module: echo "/sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2404/Tridium232_r01" > /etc/usb/350130901TF9S81        2) Reboot to reprogram Check for usb firmware updates done   To fix the issue, download and start PuTTY. In PuTTY Configuration, select the radio button labeled Serial under Connection type. In the text field under Serial line enter COM3 (or whatever the port number is) and enter 115200 in the text field under Speed. Press the Open button to connect. You will need the same VCP driver that is noted in Preparing for new JACE commissioning  and JACE-8000 Backup and Restore Guide. Sign in to the JACE serial shell. At the prompt type 'sh' to exit the menu and enter serial shell prompt (shell prompt is $ dollar sign). Copy the correct command from the serial shell instructions. To copy with PuTTY, click and drag over the text. When you lift the mouse button, the text will be in the clipboard. To paste the text, you simply right-click. In the instructions above, 350130901TF9S81 is serial number of a programmable device that controls the serial port. Your serial number will be different. But if that was your serial number, and the erased device was an RS-485 expansion module, then the command to enter would be:    echo "/sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2425/Tridium485-2_r01" > /etc/usb/350130901TF9S81   And if it was an RS-232 expansion, then the command to enter would be:    echo "/sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2404/Tridium232_r01" > /etc/usb/350130901TF9S81   The file name and path may change in newer versions of Niagara. Therefore, copy from the instructions given in the serial shell output (do not copy the command from this Knowledge Base Article). Press the enter key after the command has been pasted correctly. Then send shutdown to warm-boot the JACE-8000, or just cycle power.  Observe the following output on the next boot:   Starting USB-0 and USB-1 Host controllers... Started USB-0 and USB-1 Host controllers get_ctrlperms: ctrlperms set to 644 Check for usb firmware updates Reprogramming usb device: 1.2 350130901TF9S81... loaded 350130901TF9S81 with /sys/images/usb/vid03eb/pid2404/Tridium232-1_r07.bin Reprogramming usb device done: 1.2 350130901TF9S81 Expansion boards have been reprogrammed - rebooting... exiting usbinit, shutdown requested   The JACE will boot one more time, and then it will operate normally.  Please refere to this additonal article for more help.   Jace 8000 Serial Port Issues

BACnet device Instance Number (Instance ID) in EcoStruxure Building Operation

Issue Finding the rules governing the BACnet device Instance ID in EBO and learning to change it if required. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled  Cause The BACnet device Instance ID must be unique within a BACnet system. There may be a need to find out or change the device Instance ID to ensure there are not duplicates.  Resolution When a BACnet Interface is added to an SmartX server, AS or ES, the Server will become a BACnet device and it will have an Instance ID (automatically generated or manually assigned).  To check an ES or AS BACnet device instance ID go to the properties of the BACnet Interface and then the Advanced tab. The device instance ID is defined as the Object ID. To check other BACnet device, SmartX controller or 3rd party BACnet device, go to the properties of the BACnet Device and then the Advanced tab. The device instance ID once again is defined as the Object ID.  No 2 BACnet devices in any system may have the same Instance ID/Object ID. The valid range of Instance Numbers for a BACnet device is 0 to 4194302.   Change BACnet Device ID: You can change BACnet device IDs for SmartX Server or Controller when there is a conflict with another BACnet device, move controller or in those situations where you need to change the originally selected value for some local or site-specific reason. In EBO V3.2.3 or higher (except V3.3), it is possible to change BACnet Device ID of an SmartX server (ES, AS-P or AS-B), as explained in: Changing the BACnet Device ID in a SmartX Server To change SmartX IP Controller BACnet device ID, follow: Changing a BACnet/IP Device ID

Satchwell MEU 3-port Unit Control Valve replacement.

Issue Satchwell MEU 3-port Unit Control Valve is obsolete. Product Line Field Devices Environment Satchwell MEU 3-port Unit Control Valve installations Cause Satchwell MEU 3-port Unit Control Valve requires replacement due to failure. Resolution Satchwell MEU 3-port Unit Control Valve may be replaced by Schneider Electric VZ319 series Unit Control Valve, although dimensional differences may apply. It should be noted that VZ319 series Unit Control Valves are available in both Flat Face and Compression fitting specifications. The latest issue of the Schneider Electric Valves and Actuators Catalogue should therefore be consulted in order to determine the availability of the particular size / kv / fitting combination required. It should also be noted that any Actuator installed on the Satchwell MEU 3-port Unit Control Valve will not be compatible with the replacement Schneider Electric VZ319 3-port Unit Control Valve and that a Schneider Electric MZ20 series Actuator of the appropriate operating voltage / signal type will also be required.

Damaged or Disabled Licenses

Issue Licenses are becoming damaged repeatedly over time and/or licenses are going in to a disabled state. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC Vista Environment SmartStruxure License Administrator Virtual Machine Cause Damaged Licenses: If the license server / license administrator is installed on a virtual machine, the common reason for damaged licenses is that the MAC address of the virtual machine is not set to be static. Every time the MAC address changes, the license will become damaged. Disabled Licenses: This is usually caused when the license fails to complete a process such as a return or repair. This could be due to an intermittent internet connection or the process timed out while trying to communicate with the license server. Resolution Repair License with License Administrator The first step to take with a damaged or disabled license is to use the repair function in license administrator. Follow the steps from WebHelp topic Repairing an EcoStruxure Building Operation Software License. If the repair function does not work, then the license server will need to be reset.  Reset License Server (Unable to Repair License) Below are the steps to remove the damage or disabled licenses before reactivating the permanent licenses again: Put a SBO demo license on the site to get it back up and running right away. Locate the Entitlement ID and/or activation ID of the impacted licenses. Open a case with your local BMS support group and provide them this information. This information will be used to release the licenses to prepare them to be rehosted. There are then two potential methods to  reset the license server: Download and run the SBO License Server Reset tool from the Community Manually reset the License Server Stop the License Server. In the License Server application folder, remove all files:                 - File path for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and WIndow 10: \ProgramData\FLEXnet                 - File path for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2012: \ProgramData\FLEXnet   Start the License Server Reactivate the returned network licenses.   Note: When you reactivate all returned network license, new License Server .data files are created together with the activation of the first license. For more detail, reference WebHelp: Resetting the License Server.

Capture a Modbus trace log in EBO/SBO

Issue How can I troubleshoot a communication issue with the Modbus protocol Is there a log available within the AS or ES that shows the Modbus communication between Modbus devices Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Workstation Building Operation Automation Server Building Operation Enterprise Server Cause When troubleshooting Modbus issues in an AS or ES it can be helpful to see the communication between devices to help identify this issue. The trace log within both server types is available and is configured as described below in the resolution. Resolution Open Workstation and navigate to [AS/ES name]/System/Modules/Trace/Loggers/nsp/nsp.pin. Right-click "nsp.pin.modbus" and choose Properties. Under Level, change from "Information" to "Debug", then click ok. In EBO 7.0 and higher, "Debug" will report 1 line per transaction, where "Trace" will report 8 lines for the same transaction. In EBO 7.0 and higher, instead of logging all Modbus with "nsp.pin.modbus," you can log separately Modbus TCP and Modbus Serial using either "nsp.pin.modbus.CommunicationLayer.ModbusCommsLogger.Serial" or "nsp.pin.modbus.CommunicationLayer.ModbusCommsLogger.TCP" Let it run a few minutes. If there are some user input needed to recreate the Modbus issue, then perform these steps now. Retrieve the log by right-clicking [AS/ES name]/System/Modules/Trace/TraceSettings and choose Trace settings->Get trace log.  Save the log file. A useful tool available on the Community, the Modbus decoder can be used to assist in viewing/debugging the Modbus trace log file information saved in the previous step. Once debugging is complete remember to change log level back to "Information" (reverse of step 3). Note: If the ES or AS is reset, i.e. cold started or warm started, the log level will return to 'Information', so if further increased logging is required, the procedure will need to be repeated. Note2: From v6 (2024), adding the trace below can be helpful for Modbus RTU /[ASName]/System/Modules/Trace/Loggers/nsp/nsp.pin/nsp.pin.sport/nsp.pin.sport.DeviceRS485   Here is a video showing the above process.

Modbus communication, Intermittent or unstable after upgrading

Issue 3rd party Modbus RTU devices go offline or have unstable value transfer after upgrading to version 1.7.1 or above Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Detected in version 1.7.1 or above. Automation Server Modbus RTU (RS485) interface Cause The performance of the Modbus RTU interface was improved in version 1.6 and further in version 1.7. This improved performance can make the Modbus Master in SmartStruxure too fast for some third party Modbus RTU devices, and they may be unable to handle the faster polling rates the newer software can provide. Resolution In the Modbus Master Network there are various settings that can be changed to allow it to compensate for slower devices. The settings in this screen shot shows example settings that may be suitable for slower devices or problem networks.   Increasing the Transmit Guard bits from the default of 2 allows more time after one packet before the next packet will start transmitting on the bus. This is useful both for slow responding devices, devices that take longer to turn off their Transmit driver as well as networks that have a high capacitance due to poor cable selection. The Receive timeout (ms) is the length of time the master will wait to receive a response. Decreasing this from the default of 2000 mS (2 Seconds) can often improve network communications, by not waiting too long for a device that may not be responding or offline will improve the overall network operation. By default there is 0 delay between polling the points, by introducing a delay in the Point Poll Delay (ms)  it allows slower devices to handle the data polls from the interface. This is a key setting for slower devices that cannot keep up with the faster polling from the latest Automation Servers and most 3rd party devices will require a value greater than 0. The Silence Characters do not usually need changing in an upgrade, but they can be used to help with poor installations where there is high capacitance in the cabling or poor grounding, this can often be used with lower baud rates on problem sites. The default Poll Duty Cycle is usually appropriate for most installations and is not affected by the upgrades, but can be adjusted if required to match 3rd party devices. In V3.x the same settings apply and the screenshot now looks like this:

How to capture localhost traffic with Wireshark to help troubleshoot EWS communication issues.

Issue When the EWS is installed on the same machine using the service then all packets will be going to the localhost and will not hit the NIC so will not be captured in a Wireshark packet capture. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, EcoStruxure Security Expert Environment Security Expert Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Automation Servers (AS-P, AS-B) Cause Packets sent between services on the same machine (like SOAP and EWS) do not hit the NIC and therefore cannot be captured with the default configuration of Wireshark using the WinPcap packet sniffing library.  Resolution Replace WinPcap with Npcap to emulate a loopback NIC for packet capture. Go to https://nmap.org/npcap/ for details on the library. Download the library installer from https://nmap.org/npcap/#download Uninstall WinPcap. Install Npcap. Npcap will then create an adapter named Npcap Loopback Adapter. In Wireshark choose this adapter to capture, loopback traffic will be the seen the same way as other non-loopback adapters. This can be tested by typing in commands like "ping 127.0.0.1" (IPv4)  or "ping ::1" (IPv6).

Differences between EcoStruxure Energy Expert and EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert

Issue There can be confusion on the differences between EcoStruxure Energy Expert (formerly Power Manager) and EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME)  Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, Other Environment EcoStruxure Building Operation  EcoStruxure Energy Expert (formerly Power Manager) EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert Cause Power Monitoring Expert (PME) is a long-established product in the Schneider Power (EMS) offer and so its place in the market is well known and its support path is very clear. Energy Expert is a much newer offering that intentionally sits nearer to EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO) in the BMS community, while still remaining an EMS product and so its place in the market and support path is more easily confused. Resolution Definitions   EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME) Schneider Electric's supervisory software dedicated to power monitoring that enables you to maximize operational efficiency, optimize your power distribution system, and improve bottom-line performance   EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO)  Schneider Electric's premier building management system (BMS) providing integrated monitoring, control, and management of energy, lighting, HVAC, and fire safety.   EcoStruxure Energy Expert (EE)                                                    Designed to offer Power Monitoring Expert (PME) features to new and existing EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO) projects, giving extra capabilities to manage power utilization in a BMS environment.   It utilizes EcoStruxure Web Services (EWS) to be able it to share data between the two EcoStruxure software platforms. (EBO and EE) and applications such as the ETL Tool and the Integration Utility in the integration process.   EcoStruxure Web Services (EWS) The Schneider Electric standard for sharing data among various Schneider software platforms to facilitate the creation of EcoStruxure Solutions. Based on conventional Web Services technology (SOAP, WSDL)   ETL Tool The function of the ETL is to extract select historical data (Trend logs) from EBO, and load that data into the Energy Expert SQL database for use in Dashboard and Reports etc.   Integration Utility The function of the Integration Utility is to export Energy Expert Dashboards, Reports and Alarms for import into EBO to enhance its Power Offer to the customer   Product Support Path: PME, Energy Expert, ETL and the Integration Utility are are all fundamentally Power Products and so should always be raised through your local Product Support Team (via your Customer Care Center (CCC)) under an EMS commercial reference. However in cases where an Energy Expert project needs specific assistance with the EBO side of the integration then a BMS commercial reference should be used instead.

RSTP Troubleshooting for BACnet/IP Controllers

Issue BACnet/IP controllers are not configured in RSTP Mode by default, therefore must be configured during installation. Having RSTP Mode disabled by default allows one to connect BACnet/IP controllers to any switch, even with port security configured to detect BPDU packets and disable the port. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC IA Series Environment Multi-purpose Controller (MP-C) Multi-purpose VAV (MP-V) Room Controller IP-IO I/A Series N4 Jace8000 SmartX IP Driver for Niagara Cause RSTP protocol requires that controllers, switches, and network architecture are configured to ensure the protocol will operate as expected.  Resolution Setting RSTP Mode for BACnet/IP Controllers ALL devices in the RSTP loop MUST BE IN RSTP MODE to function properly. This is not a huge issue because during startup you can unplug 2nd side of the loop and it will function properly in a daisy chain. Ensure the SmartX Controllers are configured correctly Configuring BACnet/IP Controller Device Settings A factory or network reset returns the RSTP setting to Disabled. Important: Whenever you change RSTP settings, the controller MUST be WARM START. If you fail to perform this restart, the BACnet/IP controller will continue communicating using its previous RSTP settings. 'Activate IP Changes' does not affect RSTP mode. Ensure the switch is configured correctly per Configuring RSTP on a Managed Switch for SmartX IP Controllers. If asked to review this for a case, please provide PSS screenshots from the switch configuration page(s).  Bridge Priority = 4096 Hello Time = 2 sec Max Age = 40  (40 is the maximum value allowed by the protocol. Default is 20) Forward Delay = 21 sec Bridge Priority Considerations Change Bridge Priority by adding 4096 as switches get further away from AS. (8192, 12288, 16384, 20480, 24576, 28672) DO NOT set the priority as 32768 or higher because that is the built-in Bridge Priority of BACnet/IP Controllers. First, configure the Root Bridge Switch (closest to the Automation Server) settings. Then, configure the additional Switches in order of increasing Bridge Priority. {OPTIONAL}: Troubleshooting RSTP with Wireshark Plug in 2nd side of the RSTP Loop If all devices stay online, then it is working properly. Now test line breaks or controllers that are powered off. If all devices go offline and/or the switch LED is flashing rapidly, then go to RSTP Troubleshooting. Managed Switch Troubleshooting Consult the documentation or contact the vendor or manufacturer to assist with configuration for the items below. Ensure the switch is IEEE 802.1D - 2004 capable. BACnet/IP Controller Networking Term Definitions RSTP Ring mentions the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol is specified in IEEE 802.1D - 2004. Ensure the firmware is up-to-date by contacting the vendor or manufacturer or downloading it from its website. Ensure ports not participating in RSTP are configured as Edge Port, Admin port, or have STP disabled. Nomenclature for those settings on your specific managed switch may vary. Adding BACnet/IP controllers to site-managed switches, work with Local IT to add these devices to their network. They will need to work with their switch vendor/manufacturer/support group to ensure the configuration of those switches because it could be more complex than changing the minimum recommended four settings above. Also, since RSTP Protocol is limited to Max Age = 40 (hops including site switches and BACnet/IP controllers), each loop's size may be limited based on their site switch network configuration and architecture.  Determined the proper configuration (or disable) for the following features. DHCP snooping Dynamic ARP inspection Denial-of-service (DOS) mitigations BPDU Guard BPDU Filter Energy-saving settings. Similar to Wake-on-LAN: the switch had minimal traffic, so ports entered power-saving mode. When they reactivated, the AS-P had already timed out, triggering a comm loss alarm. RSTP Troubleshooting Check each BACnet/IP Controller -> Diagnostics -> Device Report to confirm in RSTP Mode MANUAL CHECKOUT Double-click MP - Diagnostics Files - Device Report It will open in the default text editor Review the Device Settings section near the bottom. In firmware 1.00.0x, the report should report RSTP Mode: Enable In firmware 2.00.0x or higher, RSTP: Enabled and RSTP Status: Operational If it reports disabled, then perform Setting RSTP Mode for BACnet IP Controllers Step 1 until RSTP is working properly. USE SEARCH & EVENTS EBO 2.x MP Device IP and Settings.xml for EBO 2.0 as it only includes MP controllers EBO 3.x SmartX Device IP and Settings.xml for EBO 3.x or higher Import attached search USE RSTP STATUS GRAPHIC IN WEBSTATION MUST BE EBO 3.1 or higher which includes ClientAPI support Frontline Fridays Episode 02 - Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) Date: 2022-11-11 Mike Botens posted the following in the thread: RSTP Status TGML dated 2022-11-09 PDF of the presentation Fusion Fridays - Session 07  Date: 2020-05-28 The start of the video shows the graphics page in use RSTP Status.zip is downloaded via the link below the video. Extract the TGML and drop it on the AS to import. The suggestion is to store TGML directly under the AS to help with navigation in Webstation. bind Network to the BACnet/IP network with the BACnet/IP Controllers. (You may need a second TGML page if BACnet/IP controllers are on Primary and Secondary IP) Run from web browser via WebStation because utilizes ClientAPI KNOWN ISSUES Offline controllers that are scattered are NOT an RSTP issue. Check to see if there is a possible DHCP issue by verifying controllers are still at their AUTO-IP address (IP 169.254.nnn.nnnn Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0). RSTP communications issues affect the entire RSTP loop or one contiguous group of controllers. Factory Reset or controller replacement should leave one ethernet cable unplugged until configured for RSTP per these articles: Replace a BACnet/IP Controller in an RSTP Ring Network Workflow and MP Controller Reset Modes If BACnet/IP Controller Device Report OR RSTP Graphic reports RSTP Status: Changes Pending instead of RSTP Status: Operational, disable RSTP Mode, Warm Start, re-enable RSTP Mode, Warm Start, and check again. SmartX is now SpaceLogic. KNOWN ISSUES with Firmware affecting RSTP: If Firmware 3.02.01 is installed, please upgrade to 3.02.02. RSTP not performing as expected with Static IP addressing RSTP does not work well on RPC HW RPC-16-B HW revision 6

BBMD and BBDT Enterprise Server or Automation Server

Issue BBMD and BBDT Enterprise Server or Automation Server Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server and Automation Server BBMD (BACnet Broadcast Management Device) IP subnet, IP router  Cause Clarification for both BACnet Broadcast Management Device (BBMD) and BACnet Broadcast Device Table (BBDT) when used within Building Operation servers. Resolution A BBMD is needed when communicating to BACnet devices on another IP segment/subnet (across IP routers). One BBMD is required per subnet; this is because IP routers block broadcast packets and BACnet uses broadcast packets to initiate and maintain communications.  Continuum CyberStation (below) or bCX4 can act as a BBMD.     A BBMD can be created in a Building Operation Enterprise Server or Automation Server.    The BBMD on the other subnet should be as below   Now all the BACnet devices should be visible on both subnets Notes No more than a single BBMD should be created on each subnet for each IP port used. Additional information about BBMDs is available on WebHelp The Teach and Learn commands are useful for larger networks with multiple BBMDs

BACnet Interface - Contains Unresolved BACnet Reference

Issue The BACnet Interface Contains a Yellow Exclamation Icon and when you hover over to read the tooltip it states, “Contains Unresolved BACnet Reference”. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment EcoStruxure Building Operation Building Operation Multi-Purpose Controller Building Operation Multi-purpose VAV Building Operation Room Controller Building Operation IP-IO Cause There is a reference misconfiguration within the “Time Synchronization Recipients” under the BACnet Interface. Resolution Select and highlight the BACnet Interface then select the Time Synchronization Recipients TAB Compare the list Names with the list to the left under the IP Network Tree. In this example, we can see that MPV-9A is not a controller within my database under the IP Network_2. Highlight/Select the controller under Time Synchronization recipients and edit the details by clicking on the pencil icon. Within the Time Synchronization Recipient screen, we want to adjust this device to match the ACTUAL device located under our IP Network_2 named MP-9A_Roof. Click on the “three dots|ellipsis “to browse to the correct Recipient device identifier. In this example: Select the BACnet Interface > IP Network_2 > MPV-9A_Roof as this is the correct path for this device. At this point, we have the correct path under the Recipient device object reference. Adjust the Recipient name to match the BACnet name you configured for that device. In this example, it was set to MPV-9A_Roof. TIP: Click the BACnet button to fill in the recipient name field with the BACnet name of the device referenced in the recipient device object reference field. Click OK. If this is the only device you need to modify then you can click the SAVE icon. If you have more devices to adjust, then you will repeat the process until you're done with all the devices. You have now resolved the reference errors against the BACnet Interface.
