Extended Trend Log comparison, EcoStruxure Building Operation versus Continuum

Issue Why do the Architectural Guidelines specify a maximum of 1500 Extended Trend Logs in Automation Servers, whereas such a limitation did not exist with the Continuum Net Controllers, like the NetController II.   Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled Cause EcoStruxure Building Operation's architectural guidelines specify a limit of 1500 Extended Trend Logs for the Automation Servers (AS-P/AS-B). Sites transitioning from Andover Continuum to EcoStruxure Building Operation need to understand the architectural differences that necessitate this limit. Resolution The architectural differences between Continuum and EcoStruxure Building Operation means that it is crucial that Extended Trend Logs are managed effectively to ensure ensuring optimal system performance.   In Continuum: Controller Role: Controllers do not participate in Extended Trend Log functionality beyond sending data from intrinsic logs upon request from Cyberstations. Log Management: Extended Trend Logs reside at and are managed by Cyberstations. Load Distribution: Multiple Cyberstations, configured to collaborate, maintain the Extended Trend Logs, minimizing the load on controllers.     This design puts very little load on the controllers when it comes to Extended Trend Log functionality.   In EcoStruxure Building Operation: Distributed Database Architecture: Extended Trend Logs are managed by the AS-P/AS-B servers. Server Load: The server performs tasks typically handled by multiple Cyberstations in Continuum, which often run on more powerful PC hardware. Performance Management: To prevent Extended Trend Log servicing from overwhelming the Automation Server's resources (CPU, memory), a limit of 1500 logs is enforced. Exceeding this limit can degrade server performance and potentially cause reboots due to critical memory usage.  This can be seen in the following example trace log entry: Nov 30 15:39:58 PSS-AS02 memcritsv[1011]: Memory usage critical!

Using a binding template to bind objects with a period ('.') in the object name

Issue EcoStruxure Building Operation allows using a period embedded in the name of an object (i.e My.AnalogValue) and  the name of a binding variable in the Script program cannot contain a period.     In the Script program all the periods in the binding variable names have to be changed to a different character such as the underscore (_).   This in turn causes a problem for a programmer that has created many objects using the period in the names as it is now NOT possible to use the default name matching binding template. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Script Programs Enterprise Server Automation Server Cause Script programs do not allow a period '.' in binding variable names because the period has special functionality in the Script compiler. Resolution Create a new path matching binding template or edit an existing one to map the underscore to the period.     Here is a second example:   Name of point/value contains embedded '.' as well as spaces      This is what the binding variable would look like in the Script program   and here is the Path Matching Template

How to avoid EBO license damage in virtual environment

Issue The EBO license is activated on a virtual machine, need to make sure that it will not get damaged. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Enterprise Central Building Operation Workstation Cause Scenarios leading to broken Trusted Storage (license damage), when license is activated on a Virtual Machine. In some cases, the License Administrator can be used to repair the license, and in other cases, product supported will need to be contacted. Resolution FlexNet documentation explains how licensing in virtual machines works, what causes license damage, and how to avoid license damage. Make sure that documentation is related to the FNP version (FlexNet publisher) used by installed EBO, ex. EBO V4.0.2 uses version 2021 (11.18.1) and EBO V5.0.2 uses FNP V2022 R3 (11.19.2).  You can also check the FNP version by checking the properties, details of lmadmin.exe file located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Schneider Electric EcoStruxure\Building Operation x.x\License Server Binding elements for licenses activated on a virtual machine: FlexNet publisher documentation lists three binding elements for virtual machines, all of which are deal breakers: MAC address, UUID, and Generation ID, refer to Binding in a Virtual Environment (revenera.com)  Scenarios that can cause license damage (Trusted-Storage Breakage): In the attached FlexNet White Paper: Understanding Virtualization Features in FlexNet Publisher, Page 9, details binding variables and which scenarios can change each binding element. Page 11 in the same white paper, Recovering from a Binding Break in TS, explains common scenarios leading to broken TS and if a license can be repaired.  WebHelp article EcoStruxure Building Operation Software License Repair, explains other reasons for license damage, for physical or virtual machine.  Please contact your local support if the License Administrator can't repair the license. How to configure Modbus TCP gateway timeout

Issue EBO server has receive timeout parameter for Modbus TCP gateway, and the gateways has also time for the serial line. Having both timeouts not configured properly can lead to instability issues. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled Building Operation Edge Server - Standard Cause When EBO sends a request to the Modbus gateway, e.g. polling a register from a serial device, it expects the gateway to respond with a value or exception code within the configured receive timeout. The Gateway will forward the request to the serial device and wait for a response within the timeout configured in the gateway.  If the device fails to respond within the timeout period, the gateway will send an Exception code 11 to EBO (Gateway Target Device Failed to Respond).    If the timeout configured in the EBO server is less than or equal to the timeout configure in the gateway, the EBO connection to the gateway may timeout before the connection between the gateway and the Modbus device timeouts.  This can lead to frequent device offline alarms, if one or more devices are slow or offline. Resolution The receive timeout configure in the Modbus TCP Gateway Properties – Basic Tab should be higher than the serial line timeout configured in the Modbus TCP gateway. Please see Setting Message Timeout for Modbus Client and Modbus Server - EcoStruxure Panel Server User Guide for examples/recommendations.

Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment Building Operation Enterprise Central Building Operation Enterprise Server Building Operation Automation Server Premium Building Operation Automation Server Bundled Building Operation Edge Server - Standard Building Operation WorkStation Script editor Cause Take the following program as an example:   Datetime Output TimeOut, TimeOut2 TimeOut = StrToDate ("1/17/2012 15:00") TimeOut2 = StrToDate ("1/17/2012 3:00 PM") In EcoStruxure Building Operation, the values will read:  "1/17/2012 9:00:00 AM" (in this example, the UTC offset is set for -6). In servers, all time values are stored in UTC, then the offset is applied by the client.  When it receives a value from a Script program, it stores the value as UTC, then the offset for the selected timezone is applied. Resolution Write code in the Script program to adjust the time values to UTC. Check the example code below to help understand operation: Datetime Output dtOut1 Datetime Output dtOut2 String Output str1 dtOut1 = Date 'Local time, displays with added UTCOffset dtOut2 = Date - UTCOffset - DST 'Local time, adjusted by the UTCOffset and DST, displays properly Print Date to str1 'Local time String value displays properly (UTCOffset system variable is available in v2.0 or higher, DST system variable is available in EBO 2022 v4.0 or higher)

Issue When doing a conversion from TAC Vista with LNS Network, to EcoStruxure Building Operation, what system should handle the addressing of the devices? What does the Network property “Shared LNS and SBO network” mean? Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, TAC Vista Environment TAC Vista Conversion Tool Cause In a TAC Vista system, running as LNS system, the network is marked as Protected in TAC Vista. This means that all addressing is handled via the LNS system. Resolution After a conversion from TAC Vista with LNS network, to EcoStruxure Building Operation, a flag is set in the Network properties, named “Shared LNS and SBO network” which means that the LonWorks network is shared between LNS and EcoStruxure BMS. LNS is used for network management, such as handling addresses and Lon bindings. LNS has the ownership of the network. EcoStruxure Building Operation is used for downloading application and configuration to the controllers. It does not write in the address table of the Lon device.  This flag should not be set manually.

TC900 Modbus bias, termination and number of devices

Issue What is the unit load of a TC900 thermostat and what are the bias and termination requirements when used with a SmartX Server. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation, Field Devices Environment TC907-3A4LMA TC907-3A4DLMSA TC907-4FMSA TC907-3A4DPMSA TC907-3A4DPMSA-24 TC903-3A4LMA TC903-3A4DLMSA TC903-4FMSA TC903-3A4DPMSA TC903-3A4DPMSA-24 SmartX Server Cause Documentation does not state the RS-485 transceiver type for the TC900 range, making it unclear how many devices can exist under a SmartX servers RS-485 serial port ComA or ComB. Resolution Use the Worksheet for Configuration of RS-485 Bus with generic RS-485 devices on Webhelp to determine the appropriate Modbus configuration. The answers to the transceiver interface attributes below can be applied to complete the worksheet. Q1 Failsafe Receiver : The TC900 uses an RS-485 transceiver with an integrated idle-state failsafe receiver. Q2 Data Transmission Speed : TC900 thermostats can be configured to communicate at 4800, 9600, 19200 or 38400 bps. Q4 Isolated Interface : The TC900 does not provide an isolated RS-485 interface. Q6a Measured Resistance : With no electrical connections to the TC900, the measured resistance between the RS-485 low-side (-) signal and the communications common is 8.2K ohms. Based on this the unit load of the TC900 is 1.46 (12.000/8,200) Bias requirements and number of devices If there are only TC900 devices on the RS-485 bus then Generic RS-485 Network Device configuration 1 applies, configuration becomes very simple and no node or distance reductions are called for. The failsafe receivers can typically operate with no added bias resistors. Connect a 120 ohm termination resistor across the + and - data lines at the head end of the bus (typically at the SmartX server). Connect another 120 ohm termination resistor across the + and - data lines on the last node at the far end of the bus. Connect the shield drain wire to earth ground terminal rail in the panel with the SmartX server. This is the only ground connection of the shield for the complete cable segment. Connect the RET/Shield terminal (see the figure below) on the SmartX server to the ground rail in the panel using a 12 AWG (3.31 mm²) to 18 AWG (0.82 mm²) wire. Since the TC900 has a unit load of 1.4 the maximum number of devices that can be placed under each comm port using this configuration is 21 (31.5 / 1.46 = 21.5) Also check out the SmartStruxure-RS485-Controller Unit Load Quick-Help video on the Exchange. Note:  Adding an RS-485 Repeater at this point provides another 32 Units Loads to the Network which can be continued up to the Architectural Maximum defined for the hosting controller.

Hosting a third party BACnet device on Multiple Automation Servers

Issue Is it possible to host the same third party BACnet device on the AS-P private networks on multiple automation servers, which are all connected on the same network? Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation. Environment Building Operation Automation Server Premium Cause The design in question is a 3-storey accommodation building which includes 1 x BMS panel/AS-P per level. However, only 1 x Mitsubishi EW-50E BACnet gateway is being provided for the building. Resolution It is possible to host the same 3rd party BACnet device in multiple AS-Ps. Some caution is required, however, because if the user makes changes to an object in that device through one AS-P, that change may not be reflected in other AS-Ps. When viewing runtime variables, such as 'Value' and 'Status Flags', this is not a problem because the EBO server will always get new values from the wire. Where the problem can present itself, is when changes are made to configuration values because these are only updated in an EBO server during an upload operation. For example, if you set the hi-limit and low-limit values in an analog-value object from one AS-P, those values will not be updated in other AS-Ps until you do an upload of that object.   The other place where this problem may present itself is in schedules. An EBO schedule only writes values to a device when that value changes. For example, if you have a schedule configured to change the setpoint to 65 degrees at 5pm, EBO will only write a value of 65 if the current 'local' value is not 65. If this schedule only writes 1 time per day and someone has set the value to 70 from another AS-P, the first AS-P does not realize the value has changed so that schedule will not generate a write request to set the value to 65 (it will stay at 70). However, if you have a program or trend-log monitoring the value, the AS-P will be tracking that value and realize it is not 65 so you will see a write request at the scheduled time.   The system works this way because reading all values of all devices and all objects all the time is simply not practical. As long as the user is aware of how the system is designed, they can avoid these potential issues.   Make sure to use Static IP, so IP do not change, or you get multiple DHCP servers on the same network.   Another alternative is to host the BACnet device in one AS-P only, then using internal bindings to share the data with other AS-Ps.

Function Block Program fails to deploy

Issue When attempting to save & deploy a function block program using Modernized Programming, the following errors are seen: EBO 2022 - Deploy program error: The program was not deployed! (Error Code - 1073740940) EBO 2024 - Deploy program error - Invalid data "Empty binary file' Invalid data  Product Line EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment EcoStruxure Building Operation WorkStation EBO 2022 EcoStruxure Building Operation WorkStation EBO 2024  Function Block Programs (Builder for Function Block) Cause Related to known issue Modernized Programming Builder program error during deploy This is when the TEMP / TMP User variable folder paths contain a space; this can be edited in the Environmental Variables.  Resolution Edit the TEMP and/or TMP paths so that they do not contain any spaces.  To edit the Environmental Variables, follow these steps:  1. Click on the Start Menu button located at the bottom-left corner of your screen. In the search bar, type "environment variables" and press Enter.  Click on the "Edit the system environment variables" option from the search results. This action will open the System Properties window, which contains various tabs and settings for your computer. In the System Properties window, click the "Environment Variables" button located at the bottom right. Clicking this button will open another window specifically for managing environment variables.  In the Environment Variables window, under the "User variables" section, "Edit" the path that contains any "spaces".  These paths can be located anywhere on this PC.  User variables apply only to your account, while system variables affect all users on the computer. Choose accordingly, and then add or edit variables as needed. Once you have completed these steps, your new or edited environment variables will take effect.  Restart WorkStation, and the program should now deploy successfully.
