Vista Server Fails to Start

Issue TAC Vista Server fails to start or "hangs" during startup. "Ensure TAC Vista Server is started" error, after having just started Vista Server and attempting to open Workstation. Product Line TAC Vista Environment Vista Server Cause Corrupt Vista database Bad installation of TAC Vista Resolution Troubleshooting technique to determine if you have corruption of the TAC Vista Database or TAC Vista Software. Determine if the TAC Vista Server is starting by observing the Tacos.exe process in Windows Task Manager. Server is crashing if Tacos.exe is not present or disappears after starting the Server. From the Start Menu, navigate to TAC Vista Server Setup and browse the Vista Server database location to a test location, i.e. :\DBTest. This will create a new "blank" database at that location. Attempt to start TAC Vista Server and observe results in Windows Task Manager. You should get one of two results: If TACOS.exe process is running and the Server seems to start correctly, you may have a corrupted Vista Database. You may further investigate by copying the site Vista Database folder structure and placing it on another computer (with the same Vista Software version) to see if the Server will start. In some cases, it may be successful, a backup can be made and restored to site machine. In most cases, it will also fail. Restoring to a known good backup is the only recourse.   If TACOS.exe process is not running and the Server seems to start incorrectly, you may have corrupted Vista Software. It is recommended to follow the uninstall/ reinstallation procedure for your version of Vista. You may further investigate by copying the site Vista Database folder structure and placing it on another computer (with the same Vista Software version) to see if the Server will start. In this case, it should be successful.

Capturing MSTP network bus activity

Issue How to get an MSTP capture file so it can be analyzed for comm activity on an MSTP bus How to determine if a site is using bad COV management How to determine if a controller has poor bus design or installation How to determine if a site has multiple BBMD's on the same subnet Product Line Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Operation Environment bCX4000, bCX4040, ASP, ASB b3 controllers Third party BACnet MSTP devices Wireshark Cause Analyze MSTP traffic via capture. Resolution To capture MSTP communication activity to a capture file that can be analyzed using a network sniffer application such as WireShark you will need the following.   Hardware One is required to have an RS-485 Adapter to connect to the MS/TP trunk USB to RS-485 Adapter USB-RS485-WE-1800-BT FTDI, Future Technology Devices International Ltd | 768-1041-ND | DigiKey  RoamIA or RoamIO Any other RS-485 adapter compatible with BACnet MS/TP and baud rates used Software Download and install the following applications: BACnet MSTP Capture Application WireShark Configuration If using the USB to RS-485 Adapter Connect the USB adapter cable to the USB port on a laptop PC Connect the RS232/RS485 adapter to the 9-pin end of the USB adapter cable. Attach a length of MSTP bus cable to the wire terminal on the RS485 adapter. If using the FTDI Connect the TDI RS-485 adapter to the USB port on a laptop PC Connect the cables to the MSTP trunk where Orange = Data+ (A) and Yellow = Data- (B) Ensure the RS-485 adapter driver is installed in Windows by opening Device Manager and ensuring that it is listed as expected under Ports (COM and LPT). Record the COMx being reserved by the adapter.  If using Wireshark with MSTPcap.exe to capture Ensure MSTPcap.exe is installed in the Wireshark Extcap folder per MSTP Capture Application link above NOTE: Wireshark may need to be rebooted if MSTPcap.exe was added while it was open Launch Wireshark Select gear next to BACnet MS/TP on COMx Set known baud rate Click to start a capture.  If using MSTPcap.exe via Command Prompt to capture Copy the MSTP Capture application to C:\ Open a command window. Launch the application by entering C:\> Mstpcap com# ###### where com# is the PC's serial port (Com1, Com2, etc.) and ##### is the current baud rate the bCX/AS MSTP bus is configured for (19200, 38400, etc.). The command window will indicate the name of the file the activity is being captured to. Once done, close the command line window The capture data can be viewed by running Wireshark. Select File > Open and navigate to the folder the capture file was saved to and select the capture file. With the higher-end MSTP capture tools such as tools developed by PolarSoft and Cimetrix, MSTP captures at 76.8K baud are possible. Lower-end capture applications like MSTPCap typically are only able to capture MSTP packets from networks running at bus speeds at or below 38.4K baud. Also, check out the BACnet-Capturing MS/TP Traffic Quick-Help video on the Exchange. This video uses the older pipe method that was used before Extcap was available in Wireshark.

Unable to download controller operating files (pntfle.rec, lookup.rec etc) into a BAS outstation.

Issue Controller Download fails when downloading files into a BAS outstation. Product Line Satchwell BAS & Sigma Environment Satchwell BAS2000 Satchwell BAS2800 Satchwell BAS2800+ Cause File downloads (only outstation files, not node files) fail from a terminal connected to port 2 of an outstation e.g an engineers laptop.  Resolution Either perform a commstats (F3) of the node and a list of what devices and their number attached to each port is displayed. Or check the site node file to see what terminal number is configured to the outstation on Port 2. In either case the letter "T" with a device number will indicate a terminal has been set. In the BAS setup page, change the terminal number to match that found in item 1. Save and exit BAS. Re-open BAS, now download files to the controller.

MPM controller stuck in Bootloader

Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support Services for assistance. Issue Upgrading the MPMs firmware through the boot loader was unsuccessful. 10.50.80.2 is pingable, but not the default IP 10.50.80.3. The LED's keep blinking in tandem (alternating one after the other), even after having the MPM powered over 10 seconds. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager Cause This can be triggered by multiple events: - MPM was interrupted (powered off) while the firmware was still being upgraded. - Database does not exist; MPM was formatted and does not have firmware installed. - Database is corrupt (for any reason) Resolution It is strongly recommended that a firmware upgrade be done via the "File Manager" tab in Building Expert. However, if this is not possible, an upgrade can be performed through the bootloader using the following steps: 1 - At the top left part of the screen, make sure "Status" says "Connected". 2 - Format the SD card clicking on the "Submit" button next to "File System Format". "Format Done" will be displayed next to the button once the format has been completed 3 - Click on the "Browse" button and Navigate to the Firmware_update_V2.XX.bp" on your computer then click on "Submit Query". 4 - The previous step will upload the firmware file to the MPM's SD card. Once the file has been transferred, the following message will appear: or 5 - The MPM Must be kept powered-up for at least 15 minutes in order to allow the MPM some time to unpack the firmware file. The best way to determine whether the MPM is back online is to ping its IP address using a "Command Prompt" window. 6 - Once the MPM replies to the ping, Building Expert can be accessible though 10.50.80.3   If the above solution does not work; meaning that every time a new firmware is pushed to the MPM, the MPM keeps coming back to the bootloader, contact technical support

What is the maximum number of nodes and points allowed while using a Modbus TCP/IP or RTU xdriver on a BCX?

Issue Definition of number of nodes and points allowed using Modbus TCP/IP or RTU xdriver. Product Line Andover Continuum Environment Modbus Protocol Cause Definition of number of nodes and points allowed using Modbus TCP/IP or RTU xdriver according to the modbus protocol. Resolution The maximum number of nodes is 254. The address range for points is 1 through to 65535. The number of addresses is limited by the controller memory. We have had ~6000 points but please note the Modbus is a polled protocol so the more points you have the longer the poll rate.   Specific Modbus RTU Details Our Modbus RTU XDriver supports the node range from 0-255. According to the Modbus specification, the node range is from 0 – 255, with 0 being the master, 1-247 being the slaves, and 248-255 being reserved addresses. After 32 nodes (1 master + 31 slaves), you may need RS-485 repeaters to ensure proper communications. This depends on a number of different items, including if the RS485 transceivers are full or quarter load. You can find the Modbus serial standard at the link below for further details. http://www.modbus.org/docs/Modbus_over_serial_line_V1.pdf

Retrieve MPM IP Address

Issue Lost MPM IP address Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite MPM Cause Forgotten IP address Resolution 1. Connect your PC directly to your MPMs Ethernet port and set your computer network configuration to access the MPM at the default address of 10.50.80.3 (example, set your PC to use address 10.50.80.99). 2. Disconnect and re-connect power to MPM. 3. The MPM goes to Bootloader mode for approximately 10 seconds at start-up. You will see Blue and Green indicators (UN2/VA2 MPMs) alternate steadily during that time according to the following. a. While the MPM is in Bootloader mode, you can access your config.db file at 10.50.80.2/root/ config.db. b. Enter address in browser window before you restore power to not to miss the 10 second window. It may require more than one refresh attempt before you enter Bootloader. 4. The browser prompts you to open or save config.db file once successful connection is made. 5. Open file using text editor. 6. Search “ETH1_ip” field for IP address of your MPM to right side of “ETH1_ip”. 7. Enter IP address to browser address bar to access your MPM.

Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) as a BBMD

Issue Will the Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) act as a BACnet IP BBMD?   Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment Site using BACnet and one or more  SmartStruxe Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (SSL MPM)  Cause Can the MPM act as a BBMD Resolution The MPM cannot act as a BACnet Broadcast Management Device (BBMD), but it can be a foreign device to another BBMD BACnet protocol includes broadcast traffic which does not pass through on-site routers. For BACnet devices to network across a wide area or across multiple separate sites connected by the Internet, it is necessary to register the BACnet devices with a Schneider BBMD using the Foreign Device Registration function in Building Expert. For a Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) running Building Expert to function as a BACnet device, when being managed remotely over a standard TCP/IP network, it must be configured as a Foreign Device. It must also be registered on an Automation Server (AS) on the remote network that acts as a BBMD. Once done, BACnet devices can send messages to the BBMD, which are translated by the BBMD so they can pass over a standard on-site router. Then BBMD forwards the messages to the appropriate destination MPM controlling the Devices for which the BACnet messages were originally intended. Then the MPM translates the messages received over the network from the BBMD into standard BACnet messages and passes them on to the intended Devices as if they were direct BACnet messages. This Foreign Device Registration feature allows a single user with a StruxureWare Building Operations (StruxureWare Building Operation) terminal to remotely oversee multiple disparate sites simultaneously using BACnet, without having to install expensive direct connections to each site. You must have Firmware release version 2.9 or higher installed on your Manager to use Foreign Device Registration function. Here is the BACnet-Specifications-PIC-Statement.pdf And the  explanation on how to setup the DR-ForeignDeviceRegistration.pdf

Does SmartStruxure Lite support e-mail servers that require authentication?

Issue Unsure what options are available in the Lua smtp.send() function. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) Cause The Lua smtp.send() function is not fully documented. Resolution The syntax of the smtp.send() function is: smtp.send { from = string, rcpt = string or string-table, source = LTN12 source, [server = string,] [user = string,] [password = string,] [port = number,] [domain = string] }   From above you can see that the "from", "rcpt" and "source" fields are required. Whilst "server", "user", "password", "port" and "domain" fields are optional. Example Lua code is: --============================================================================== -- SSL email notification script example --============================================================================== -- Define the input you want to monitor below var("temperature", "ME.AI1") -- Room Temperature limit = 78 -- define the threshold now = scl.sysclock() if (temperature > limit) then -- When temperature is above threshold     if (sent == nil) -- Check if e-mail was already sent     and ((last == nil) or (now - last > 15 * 60)) then -- Maximum every 15 minutes         sent = true -- Only send e-mail once         last = now -- Keep track of last time     result, reason = smtp.send {     user = "alerts@server.com",  -- Enter your existing SMTP username     password = "test1234",  -- Enter your existing SMTP password     from = "alerts@company.com",  -- Enter your existing Source address     rcpt = {             "user1@company.com",  -- First recipient             "user2@company.com",  -- Second recipient             "user3@company.com"  -- Third recipient             },     source = smtp.message( {     headers = {     from = "alerts@company.com",  -- Displayed source address     to = "technicians@company.com",  -- Displayed recipients     subject = "Temperature Alert"  -- E-mail title                 },     body = "Current temperature is: " .. temperature .. Integrating a MPM with Modbus devices (i.e. power meters)

Issue Some Modbus meters can be integrated to a MPM using the built-in widgets (MOD1 checkbox enabled).  Other Modbus meters require a LUA script. With LUA scripts, the MOD1 object (Modbus config) must be disabled (MOD1 checkbox disabled). Can two Modbus meters be integrated to the same MPM, with one using the built-in widget and the other using a LUA script? Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) Modbus devices Cause Unfortunately, both meters must be integrated with LUA scripts or both must be integrated via built-in widgets. By keeping the internal Modbus driver enabled (MOD1 checkbox enabled), the Modbus component in the script will not work.  The two will conflict. Resolution The two Modbus meters must both be integrated via LUA script or by built-in widgets.

PID controller with override mode

Issue The PID controller object provided as part of the MPM software does not allow for any means of programmatic override i.e. forcing the loop output to 0%, 100% or other user defined position.  If you force the referenced Manipulated Variable (output) to a particular position by programmatically disconnecting it from the PID object, there can be a large overshoot when the PID output is reconnected.   Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) Cause If you force the referenced Manipulated Variable (output) to a particular position by programmatically disconnecting it from the PID object,  the PID controller will be 'open loop' and any integral parameter will wind up the output to its max or min position.  This can cause a large overshoot when the PID output is reconnected.   Resolution One option is to write a Lua script that forces the Controlled Variable and the Setpoint Reference to receive the same value when you override the loop output. This would freeze the output of the PID controller and prevent any integral wind up. There would still be a 'bump' when you remove the override, but it should be reduced.   Another option is to replace the PID controller object with a Lua script that provides the same the same functionality but with the addition of an override mode. You can find a sample Lua script here

How to transfer the trend log from MPM Controller to FTP location.

Issue How to manage the trend files stored on the SmartStruxure™ Lite Manager flash memory. Examples and guidelines for the FTP transfer of trend files. Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) 2.4.3 and above Lua program Cause All data points collected by a TL object are saved in a text file stored on the SmartStruxure™ Lite Manager SD memory card (which has a storage capacity of 2 GB). This file is accessible at [ipaddress]/root/data/trend.csv. The trend.csv file contains the log of all TL objects on a SmartStruxure™ Lite Manager. It logs new data until it reaches a size of ~10 MB, when it will be renamed trend_date.csv for backup. A new trend.csv file will be created to record the new data.  In the context of your application, it may be of interest to retrieve the trend.csv file from the SmartStruxure™ Lite Manager for analysis.   It is also important to remove these excess trend files since there is a risk of filling the SD card on the Manager. An example of storage requirements are listed below: A Manager with 10 trend logs recording data every 10 minutes will record ~50 kB of data each day, for a total of ~350 kB per week. A Manager with 20 trend logs recording data every 30 seconds will record ~2 MB of data each day, for a total of ~14 MB per week. Resolution The simplest way to automate this process is to use a Lua script to initiate a FTP file transfer to an FTP server on an event of your choice. The example shown in the application note below, the file transfer is initiated by a SmartStruxure™ Lite scheduler. Once the file is transferred to the FTP server, you can rename the file to create a backup. Data collection will then continue in a new and empty trend.csv file. This way, any new transfer of the trend.csv file to the FTP server will be a complement of the preceding file. This application note discusses the management of the trend files stored on the SmartStruxure™ Lite Manager flash memory, and provides examples and guidelines for the FTP transfer of these files. Lua script examples can be found here

Maximum Limits for StruxureWare Lite Design

Issue Maximum Limits for SmartStruxure Lite Design (Scalability, Capacity) Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) Cause What are the maximum number of communication between managers and end device Resolution Guidelines: number of end devices per node Wired ● 6 wired inputs (Ohms / Volts, Analog or Digital) ● 6 wired outputs (4 analog 0-12VDC, 2 digital) The analog output ports has a maximum nominal load of 50mA each. ● Need more? Modbus I/O extenders, SEC-TE, etc. Wireless devices ● In theory: almost unlimited (no physical constraints) ● In practice: limited by range and strength of wireless signal     ● EnOcean: Rule of thumb is within room (up to 75ft in building – line of sight)     ● ZigBee: Rule of thumb is within room (up to 150ft in building – line of sight)     Limited by application     ● Frequency of transmission     ● Efficient handling of data queues Guidelines: number of end devices per node BACnet - with the current basic client capabilities, the maximum number of devices supported on a single BACnet network is 1000. Modbus      Limitations for ModBus connectivity per MPM is 31 devices but depends on polling rate and amount of points:         ● Using pre-defined objects, polling rate is 30s / device         ● Using Lua script, polling rate variable ZigBee or EnOcean for the end devices? ZigBee ● Longer range ● Reliability built-in the protocol (ack, retries, …) ● Requires a battery ● Multiple channels available (possible to isolate networks / groups) EnOcean ● Self-powered (no battery) ● Easy to deploy ● Lower range ● Reliability must be ensured at the application level ● No retries ● ZigBee coordinator is a device that sets up the network, is aware of all the nodes within its network. Every ZigBee network must contain a network coordinator. ● ZigBee router can act as an intermediate router, passing on data from other devices. ● ZigBee end-device is part of the network, but doesn’t re-route information to neighbors. How many devices can I use? ZigBee ● A ZigBee network should not have more than 75 ZigBee devices in total (coordinator, router and end devices); ● A ZigBee network should not have more than 24 ZigBee routers (+1 coordinator) ● A ZigBee node (coordinator or router) should not control more than 10 peripheral end devices. EnOcean ● Using pre-built objects: ● 4 Thermostats ● 20 Switches ● 20 Relays ● The maximum number of devices added to each MPM is 49 ●The maximum number of EnOcean devices added to each MPM is 49 ●The maximum number of EnOcean devices with the same EEP added to each MPM is 49 .This only applies to firmware 2.13.1 and later, the limit for previous firmware is 20. An Exception is the following limits for devices/widgets per MPM: 20 EnOcean Switches 20 EnOcean Relays 4 EnOcean Thermostats The AV and BV variables The MPM-UN controller comes with 100 AV's and 100 BV's. MPM has capacity for up to 700 AV's and 700 BV's. After the initial 100 are consumed, add Value Banks of 100 for each AV and BV. Value Banks will be added as sub-devices under the main MPM.  Maximum data Points: MPMs can have up to 750 data points per monitor. What is the maximum size for background graphics? The maximum size of a background picture (in dashboard or section map) is 2Mbyte with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 (Width x Height). For analog inputs with a signal range in Ohms has no reading limit. You just need to configure the table in the AIC object assigned to referred input.

How to integrate MPM SSL controller over Bacnet IP

Issue Unable to monitor a SmartStruxure Lite MPM controller over a Building Management System using BACnet to an AX BMS Product Line EcoStruxure Building Expert Environment SmartStruxure Lite Multi-Purpose Manager (MPM) Cause Misconfiguration of BACnet settings on a MPM controller. Resolution Open Building Expert on the controller with a supported browser. In this example both the MPM controller and the BMS system are in the same IP subnet range. Highlight the Device's name e.g. SmartStruxure Controller and go to the Configuration tab. On Ethernet Settings (ETH1) The IP address of the MPM controller must be in the same subnet IP range of the BMS IP address, but not the same IP address. Netmask must be the same subnet on both controllers (MPM and BMS) e.g. 255.255.255.0, if not then a BBMD/Foreign Device needs to be used. Gateway IP if used. On BACnet Settings (BAC1) Network ID (171) used on the MPM controller must be different than the BMS network numbers used for BACnet MS/TP and BACnet IP Set Protocol to BACnet IP Click on the upper-left icon (Save database to flash) Important! Right-click on "SmartStruxure Controller" then on "Restart Controller," be patient. On the BMS Jace AX, under BACnet network, click on Discover, uncheck all MPM Networks assigned within the MPM (if this facility is available in the BMS), in this example we have only one, it’s #171, refer to point 4. If you don't uncheck MPM network number, the devices will still discover but with duplicates. In this example, network #1 is the BMS IP network and needs to be checked. Network #300 is the BMS MS/TP network number, and has no impact on discovering the MPM as a BACnet device. Click OK. Here’s the result of the discovery, all the objects we had at point 4. are shown. Now add the Devices to the Database, then select one device (in this example the SE8600 is selected), click the Discover button, all objects we had in point 4. are now in AX. Add them to AX database.
