NPR Telnet and SNMP post no security risk to the network

Issue Since the NPR supports Telnet and SNMP, can someone dial into the modem and gain access to a user's network? Product Line TAC INET Environment I/NET site Cause Cybersecurity of the network is important, and any vulnerabilities should be identified and mitigated. IT professionals may ask about the Telnet and SNMP capabilities of an NPR and whether that represents a risk. Resolution The NPR cannot initiate a Telnet session, therefore it will only respond to Telnet prompts. It cannot create an outgoing Telnet session into the local LAN. It is also very limited in SNMP. It will respond to a query with a packet of information. That is all it can do. It does not conduct two-way or bi-directional communication. Hackers can not use these modes to "leapfrog" into a local LAN.

Xenta 913 supported BACnet object types

Issue The Xenta 913 supports several different BACnet object types but does not support all object types. Product Line TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Xenta 913 BACnet Vista I/NET Cause The Xenta 913 is only a gateway device and is not native BACnet and thus does not support all BACnet object types. Resolution The BACnet specification outlines 49 different object types. Objects include physical points, processes and even internal operations. Most BACnet devices, including BACnet certified devices, do not support all of the object types since some of the object types are particular to specific industries and several are not commonly used. The Xenta 913 controller supports the following object types: Analog Input Analog Output Analog Value Binary Input Binary Output Binary Value Multi-state Input Multi-state Output Multi-state Value The following BACnet object types are unsupported by the Xenta 913: Access Credential Access Door Access Point Access Rights Access User Access Zone Accumulator Averaging Bit String Value Calendar Character String Value Command Credential Data Input Date Pattern Value Date Value Date Time Pattern Value Date Time Value Device Event Enrollment Event Log File Global Group Group Integer Value Large Analog Value Life Safety Point Life Safety Zone Load Control Loop Network Security Notification Class Octet String Value Positive Integer Value Program Pulse Converter Schedule Structured-View Time Pattern Value Time Value Trend Log Trend Log Multiple           Note that there is some confusion among object types. For example, while it is possible to have a Life Safety point that is a binary output, this is not the same thing as the standard Binary Output object type and the two points are not interoperable.

Running I/NET Seven as a service on Windows

Issue Running I/NET Seven as a service on Windows Product Line TAC INET Environment I/NET Seven All supported Operating Systems Cause When you log out of Microsoft Windows or restart the computer, all running processes are shut down. These processes are not resumed at log on or at restart. You have to start I/NET manually again. To get I/NET to start up when the computer restarts, you can run it as a service. Running a program as a service means that it runs in the background, but it is not visible on the Windows task bar. Resolution Use the INET Run Mode tool available on the Community.  Alternatively, you can perform the following steps to set/unset the InetIoSrv.exe as a service or application. To register I/NET Seven to run as a service Open a Windows command prompt. Go to Start > Run and type "cmd" Use right-click on the command prompt and select "Run as Administrator" Use commands cd.. (to go back one directory) and cd (to go into a folder) to navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\INET Seven\ If this is being run on a 64 Bit OS, the location then would be: C:\Program Files (x86)\INET Seven\ Type the following command. This will unregister I/NET as an application inetiosrv /unregserver Type the following command. This will register I/NET to run as a Windows service inetiosrv /service To verify the changes have taken effect Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage" Select Services and Applications > Services Look for Inet7Iosrv. It should be set to Automatic. You are now running I/NET as a service. IOSrv will now be running in the background when the PC boots up. This does not require a Log On to the PC, however, you will have to Log On to the PC as a user to launch I/NET or AMT from the desktop icon. You will notice that IOSrv has been logging all AMT transactions, messages and alarms. The SQL Server and Agent were also running in the background receiving data to the database. To set I/NET back to running as an application Open a Windows command prompt. Go to Start > Run and type "cmd" Use right-click on the command prompt and select "Run as Administrator" Use commands cd.. (to go back one directory) and cd (to go into a folder) to navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\INET Seven\ Type the following command. This will unregister I/NET as a service inetiosrv /unregserver Type the following command. This will register I/NET to run as an application inetiosrv /regserver

Error: "No Entries in Database"

Issue Unable to connect to a system that is using Server/Client Configuration. After promoting a stand alone PC to a remote client and clicking on the connect button, an error "No Entries in Database" comes up and the user cannot connect to any of the controllers on the system. After a restart of PC and an attempt to connect to the I/NET System, an error "No entries in database" is seen. Product Line TAC INET Environment I/NET Seven Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 10 Cause Some of the possible causes : After promoting a stand alone PC to a remote client the Reference Host information of both the server and the client must be updated with the IP addresses of each other. Bad communication or bad controller that is connecting the C-LAN to the Xenta 527 In some instances when running the I/NET IO Server as a service and after a restart of the PC hardware running a Windows 10 Operating System, it is has been seen to produce this "No entries in database" error.  At this stage the reason is currently unknown but the connection to the Xenta 527 is not made and the IO Server service needs to be restarted. Resolution Open I/O Server Hit the Modify button In the Reference Host Column, add the IP address of the server Repeat steps 1-3 on the server, adding the IP address of the remote client. Note: Should the Xenta 527 still not communicate to the controller: Verify that the C-LAN wire is connected properly There is communications between the controllers and the Xenta 527 If not, unplug the C-Lan connector, from all the controllers and bring them online one at a time to determine which one could be bad. Replace possible bad controller and the system should come online again. To correct the issue after a PC hardware restart, two options are available Restart the I/O Server service Change the run mode of the I/O Server to an application.  See Running I/NET Seven as a service on Windows for further information on options on how to achieve this.

Shrink I/NET SQL Database when it becomes too big

Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support for assistance. Issue I/NET SQL database becomes too big affecting the performance of I/NET. Backup and restore of the I/NET SQL database take several hours to finish. Product Line TAC INET Environment I/NET SQL Server Cause There are two files for the SQL database for I/NET: InetDb.mdf and InetDb_log.ldf. The InetDb.mdf file is the data files of the database, where all of the tables, indexes (other than full-text catalogs), stored procedures, etc. are stored. The .mdf is the primary data file for the whole database. While The InetDb_log.ldf is the transaction log. The transaction log is where all transactions are written to. Sometimes it will be the InetDb_log.ldf growing too big. Since it is less important, it can be shrunk without any impact on I/NET operation or any data/events/transactions lost. Resolution Be sure to backup the database first with DBCreate or Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Open the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the database. Right click on InetDb and choose Property. Set Recovery model to Simple in the Options. Right click on InetDb and choose Tasks-->Shrink-->Files. Choose the File type to Log, and keep the Shrink action in Release unused space. Check the file size of InetDb_log.ldf. It should have decreased in size.

Monitoring a Controller's online or offline Status

Issue Needing to monitor a controller's online or offline status. I/NET AMT will generate a station lost alarm when a controller is offline, however it is sometimes desired to have a point that can be monitored to alarm as well. Product Line TAC INET Environment subLAN Controller Lan; C-LAN Xenta 527 Cause I/NET AMT will generate a Station lost alarm when a controller is offline, however it is sometime desired to have a point that can be monitored to alarm as well. Resolution Monitoring SubLAN Controllers Connect to the Sub Lan Interface Controller (7798, 7793) Create an internal DA point called LLSSPP_Offline, with LLSSPP being the address of the subLAN device Add a Calculation to the point LLSSPP_Offline Enter this Calculation: OLD(P0) Set P0 to equal any External input point the subLAN device LLSSPP Click okay The result of this calculation is that the point will equal 1 whenever the referenced point goes old Monitoring Controller LAN or C-LAN devices Connect the Controller you wish to monitor Change an external point's Global Level to "Link" (If a point already is set to system, use it.) Connect to a second Controller on the same physical C-LAN (for best results use one physically closer to the NPR or Tap) Create an indirect point referencing the point created in step 2 Create an internal DA point called LLSS_Offline, with LLSS being the address of the controller Add a Calculation to the LLSS_Offline point Enter this Calculation: OLD(P0) Set P0 to equal the indirect point created in step 4 Click OK The result of this calculation is that the point will equal 1 whenever the indirect point goes old, which should only occur when the controller is offline.  Monitoring NPR or Xenta 527 devices Connect to a Controller under the device you wish to monitor Change an external point's Global Level to "system" (Use an existing global point if available) Connect to a second Controller under the device you wish to monitor Change an external point's Global Level to "system" (Use an existing global point if available) Connect to a controller underneath a different NPR or 527  Create an internal DA point called Link _LL_Offline, with LL being the Link address of the 527 or NPR being monitored Create 2 indirect points referencing the global points created in steps 2 and 4 Add a Calculation to the Link _LL_Offline point Enter this Calculation: OLD(P0)&OLD(P1) Set P0 and P1 to equal the indirect points created in step 7 Click okay The result of this calculation is that the DA point will equal 1 whenever both of the referenced indirect points go old.  This should only happen when communication is interrupted to both controllers indicating the most likely cause is the NPR being offline. Please be aware of other potential causes of 2 controllers on the same link going offline. Examples include power circuit failure or cut wire when selecting which controllers to monitor.

Entry PIN t/o message shown when using PIN PAD functions

Issue When using PIN code or PIN with card number for door entry, the door does not open. A time out message "Entry PIN t/o" is shown in AMT. Product Line TAC INET Environment I/NET PIN Pad Reader Cause There may be two causes of this message: There is an output format for PIN Pad called burst format. There are several types of burst format available, for example 4 bit, 8 bit, 26 bit etc. For I/NET, it only accepts 8 bit and 26 bit type. If the burst format isn’t correct, there will be "Entry PIN t/o" message appeared, which means timeout for waiting for PIN entering. The digits of PIN are less than 6 bits. Resolution The following solutions are recommended for the two causes of this issue: For cause 1, the burst format of the PIN pad should be changed to 8 bit or 26 bit (Usually using 8 bit. If the extended PIN function is needed, 8 bit type should be chosen). For HID reader, there is a configuration card to change the burst format to specific type. Refer to HID relative documentation. NOTE: In most instances the Configuration Cards must be presented to the reader within 5 seconds of powering up the reader. For cause 2, if the digits of PIN are less than 6 bits, a "#" button needs to be pressed after entering the PIN. If this solution can't work, you can change the PIN to 6 digits by adding "0" ahead of the PIN. For example, the PIN is "3325", the PIN entered should be "003325".
