General recommendations for LonWorks system architecture

Issue What are the general recommendations for LonWorks system architecture? Product Line TAC Vista, TAC IA Series Environment LNS database LonWorks network Vista Server I/A Series MNL Cause Understanding the different communication speeds and optimal site design can lead to improved performance of LON traffic on a network. Resolution There are three levels supported by LonWorks. TCP/IP 1.25mbs high speed backbone 78Kbs FTT-10 level Our recommendation is to maximize the use of TCP/IP, minimize the use of the 1.25mbs high-speed backbone and use a tiered structure of 78Kbs LON segments. The IP provides high-speed data transfer, which is good. The 1.25mbs high-speed bus works fine, but it has a number of special requirements that must be adhered to for proper operation. The flexibility of this 1.25mbs network is limited for the expansion of new Lonworks segments, whereas the TCP/IP is more in line with current building infrastructure making it easier to expand the LonWorks system. In the TCP/IP there are two options that allow for better communications. Standard TCP/IP configuration that will work well for most middle-sized networks. This is standard with NL220 or Lonmaker installations Orion Stack is an improvement on the standard TCP/IP and can poll multiple values at one time helping improve the TCP/IP response on large networks. More information in setting up an Orion stack improved TCP/IP LonWorks network.

Vista DSSWriterService - Permission

Issue No events in Vista No events in SQL $Queue grows in size Product Line TAC Vista Environment Vista DSSWriterService SQL Database Cause DSSWriterService is responsible to transfer log data and event's from TAC Vista queues into the SQL Database, it is crucial that this process has enough authority else no logs or events will be written. Resolution To change the user that handles DSSWriterService: Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel Open Administrative Tool and execute Services In the list to the right, (Services), locate TAC DSS Writer Services Right-click the TAC DSS Writer Services and choose properties Click on tab Log On Use Local System account or under "This account" specify a user with the correct authority Restart the Service and check the $queue folder. If folder insertevents and insertlogvalues are empty or just have a few files that are being removed the DSS Writer is working and has a connection with SQL. NOTE: After Vista 5.1.7 the Queue folders have been reworked and there are additional folders under insertevents and insertlogvalues. You will have to navigate under them to find the Event/log files.

Xenta Server firmware versus Vista Server versions

Issue Does the Xenta Server firmware version have to match the TAC Vista Server version? Product Line TAC Vista Environment Xenta Servers Xenta 511, 527, 701, 711, 721, 731, 913 Vista Server Cause This situation usually occurs when upgrading a site. After the Vista software has been brought up to the latest version, does each Xenta Server also have to have its firmware upgraded to match? Resolution Whenever possible it is best to have the Xenta Server firmware version match the Vista Server version. However, if this is not possible, then ensure that the Vista Server is always of a later version than the Xenta Server. For example: a Vista 5.1.5 Server is okay with a Xenta 5.1.4 server, but a Vista 5.1.5 Server may not operate correctly with a Xenta 5.1.6 Server. The table below describes the compatibility between the TAC Vista Server, TAC XBuilder and TAC Xenta Server applications/firmware; third party dependency, e.g. java, not considered. More information about the table above including footnotes can be found in the document TAC Vista v5.1.8, TAC Xenta 500 700 900 v5.1.8 - Release Notes section 12.3. Consult the release notices for release software to identify defect corrections, new features, and potential changes in compatibility. If the versions are compatible then the decision to upgrade is up to the user, scheduling, and access to the units in the event of a failed upgrade units are remote. To upgrade a Xenta Server in Vista right click on the Xenta Server and select properties. Change the XBuilder Version property to the version of System Program and XBuilder being used. Note: In a specific situation there has been issues with the Xenta Server password in the properties window in Workstation. In this situation the Workstation was at version 5.1.8, the Xenta server was upgraded to 5.1.9, and then the XBuilder project was downloaded to the Xenta Server again. The Xenta Server was offline in Workstation. When the properties window was opened, the Xenta server password was much longer then it should have been. By reentering the password and clicking Okay, the Xenta Server came back online.

Master node in a Vista network.

Issue What is the role of the master node in a Vista network? Product Line TAC Vista Environment Vista server Cause In a network with several nodes (Operator units), one node is designated as the Master node of the database in the network Resolution The Master node is the node which contains the correct information about global objects. Information about global objects is controlled by the Master node, and if the information has changed, the other nodes (Slave nodes) will copy this information when they contact the Master node. So if the master is down the slaves cannot add/delete any global objects such as users. The other nodes will continue working normally even if the master is down.

Show the actual setpoint from the TAC Xenta 102-AX on the STR250

Issue Show the actual setpoint (nvoEffectSetPt) from the TAC Xenta 102-AX on the STR250 Product Line TAC Vista Environment TAC Xenta 102-AX STR-250 Cause It is possible to select normalized setpoint, or actual setpoint, via the TAC Xenta 102-AX plugin. If you select to have a normalized setpoint (this will show the same value both in heating as well as in cooling mode, but the controller still works against the heating setpoint in heating mode, and cooling setpoint in cooling mode), you will have the same value at nvoEffectSetPt as you have on the STR250. If you select to not have normalized setpoint, both the STR250 as well as the nvoEffectSetPt will show heating setpoint in heating mode, and cooling setpoint in cooling mode. TLS and SSL for support for SMTP in Vista

Issue Certain companies and SMTP mail servers require specific security protocols in order to accept messages. The requirement of Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols can cause errors when the Vista alarm email notifications fail to send. Product Line TAC Vista Environment Vista Workstation Xenta Server Alarm Emails Cause Xenta server email notification does not have the option to use TLS or SSL security protocols TAC Vista email notification does not have the option to use TLS or SSL security protocols in versions prior to the 5.1.9 hotfix 17 build. Resolution The latest hotfix versions for Vista can be downloaded off of The Exchange Download Center. In order to obtain the SSL and TLS support for smtp server communication, Vista 5.1.9 hotfix 17 or later must be used. Prior to Vista 5.1.9 Hotfix 17 - Vista did not support Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for sending alarm email notifications. A workaround for this issue is to set up an SMTP server on the local machine or network that the Vista or Xenta server resides on. Then the email notification can be encrypted with TLS or SSL protocol before being sent on.
