Connecting a Smart-UPS to the Gateway with serial Modbus

You can connect Smart-UPS models starting with SMT, SMTL, SRT, and SURT to EcoStruxure IT Gateway with serial Modbus, also called Modbus RTU.

  1. Enable Modbus on the UPS.  From the display on the front of the UPS, first enable the advanced menu, then enable Modbus.

  2. Connect the serial cable between the UPS and the Gateway computer.
Use an APC cable, part number 940-0625 or 940-1525. More info on which cable you need

Connect the RJ45 port labeled Serial on the UPS to a DB9 connector on the computer running the Gateway.
If the computer does not have a DB9 connector, you will need a USB to RS232 converter as well. These converters are inexpensive and available from plugable.com and cablematters.com.  You might also need to install the driver for the cable.

The driver is pre-installed on many Linux systems. On Windows, download and install the driver for the converter. Check the documentation for the cable you are using. The cables from plugable.com and cablematters.com probably use this driver: http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41.
  3. Discover the device in the Gateway. Go to Discover devices and then click Discovering a Modbus device?

  4. Use these parameters:

    • Type: UPS; Device Vendor: APC; Device family: Smart-UPS; Server address: 1

    • Serial

    • Port
On Windows, go to Device Manager and look under Ports (COM & LPT) for the port number.  If you're using the driver described above, it will show as Prolific USB-to_serial Comm Port followed by the port number.

    • Baud Rate: 9600; Data Bits: 8; Parity: None; Stop Bits: 1; Flow Control: None
