EcoStruxure Automation Expert - Recommended Naming Conventions in EAE

Issue When building a Solution in EAE, each engineer has their own idea of how to name items such as pins on a function block, the names of Composite or Basic Function Blocks which they create, the names of folders, Symbols, Faceplates and the list goes on. Without a standard naming convention to conform to, a Solution can become an accumulation of unorderly syntaxes. Resolution This article serves to uncover the different naming conventions widely used in real world engineering. A EAE Naming Convention Reference Card is also provided. Its intention is to be used as a guide during your EAE’s engineering lifecycle. It is produced based on close observation of Schneider’s Libraries that comes in EAE.   Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

EcoStruxure Automation Expert - Using NETIO to Send & Receive Data over WAN

Objective This article provides 2 sample Solutions to show how NETIO can be used to send data from one machine to another. As the base protocol used is TCP/IP, data can be sent over large distances between 2 EAE Devices. The sample Function Block Network of the Solutions is explained, and you can run them in 2 different machines to test them out. The provided samples also serve as a base for you to build something bigger on top of them.   Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

How to Configure the 4G Interface on HMIBSC Edge Box

Issue Not having a 4G interface configured can lead to several issues, particularly if the HMIBSC Edge Box application relies on mobile network connectivity, means that the device will not be able to connect to the internet or communicate with other servers. This can disrupt services which require constant online access. Resolution With the use of 4G Cellular device within the HMIBSC Edge Box, this enables the Internet Connection. Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

How to Determine the Optimal CPU Performance for Modicon M580 Safety

Issue The Modicon M580 Safety controller can execute single task and multi-task applications. Unlike a single task application which only executes the MAST task, a multi-task application defines the priority of each task. When a task is running, it can be interrupted by another task with a higher relative priority. For example, when a periodic task is scheduled to execute its code, it would interrupt a lower priority task, but would wait until the completion of a higher priority task. Resolution For optimal CPU performance, Schneider Electric recommends that the total percentage of CPU bandwidth consumed by an application not exceed 80%. Users will need to determine the CPU bandwidth and fine tune to adjust the tasks period for an optimal CPU performance. AVEVA Plant SCADA: Date Picker with Calendar Genie

Issue Historically, picking a date in Citect has always been achieved using the Microsoft Date and Time Picker Control 6.0 Active X object that comes along with most Windows installation. However, as time progresses on, this Active X is no longer as popular as it used to be. Often, projects which uses the Active X, which are migrated from older systems into a new Windows 10 or above environment will fail on Compile. And installing the Active X is often difficult because it may require installing a whole bunch of un-related software just to get it. And many times, even with the Active X already in the environment, the project still does not Compile, or fail to run properly. Resolution There is an alternative to using Date and Time Picker Control 6.0 Active X and this article is to introduce how to use the Calendar Genie in lib_controls Library to do that. It will involve the implementation of a Callback Function, and this article explains how this is to be created and used.     Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

M580 Safety - Peer-to-Peer Communication using System Monotonic Time Stamping

Issue There are often customer requirements to send safety related data over communications links. At the same time, the requirement automatically arises for the transference of safe and non-safe data via a collective standard network. A safe network will allow the Safety controller to communicate with each other and provides a robust and safe means of sending safety related data using the communications medium that best suits the applications and budget.   Resolution With M580 Safety CPU firmware 3.20 or later, the safe time synchronization is based on an internal "monotonic" time clock. The safe communication DOES NOT need NTP time synchronization as the CPU is sharing its safe time with all its local and remote I/Os. The remote I/O drop uses BM•CRA31210 module and must have a firmware 2.60 or later to work. A monotonic clock is a time source that always moves forward and will not be impacted by variations leading to jumps in time (due to NTP or Daylight Savings Time updates). Monotonic uses Thomas Habets's cross platform "monotonic_clock" library under the hood.   Attached herewith are two documents file that guide you on how to implement Safe Peer-to-Peer communication between two M580 Safety ePAC (MASTER PAC and SLAVE PAC).   Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.
