How to manage force status in a SCADA system using Modicon PLC?

Manage forced variables in a PLC program has been a challenge on the industry for decades. Ideally every plant manager wants a ZERO force policy but in real world this not possible and eventually a force must be put in place to ensure production KPIs. Then the challenge becomes how to manager those forces. The solution to manage forces is to give full transparency by showing the status of forced variables in a SCADA system where operation managers and maintenance managers could see and take the needful action to replace the damaged sensors and then removed the forces in the PLC program. This KB shows an easy way to manage forces through the OPC quality code by displaying it in the supervision system.

KB - How to Execute Program Sections when M580 CPU in Wait or Standby mode

Issue The Modicon M580 Hot Standby System is a redundant control system designed for high availability and reliability in industrial applications. It consists of two M580 Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) configured in a Hot Standby configuration, where one PAC operates as the active controller and the other as the standby controller. It is possible to have the other standby controller to run program sections while in Wait or Standby state. Resolution Any program sections of the application can be executed by defining the condition of execution in the Properties window of the Section screen under the Condition tab.   Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

Working with Modicon M580 Safety within EcoStruxure Process Expert 2020R2

Issue How to work with a TÜV Rheinland certified controller, Modicon M580 Safety ePAC, within the EcoStruxure Process Expert? Resolution The EcoStruxure™ Process Expert supports users to create, configure, program, and deploy process and safety applications to the Modicon M580 Safety controller.     The Modicon M580 Safety controller is added as part of the EcoStruxure™ Process Expert system architecture, providing seamless transparency connections into the system network.   The EcoStruxure™ Process Expert handles the process logic part for M580 Safety controllers, while the safety related part will be handled by the control participant, ensuring safety functions and process control are separated and independent within a common engineering environment.   Attached document will show how this is possible. Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

KB - How to use M580 OPC-UA Client by Subscription Method

Issue In OPC-UA polling, the client actively requests data from the server at regular intervals. This actually will increase server load. The server must respond to each polling request, which can become a performance concern if there are numerous clients or high-frequency polling. Data updates may not be immediate, as they depend on the polling interval. Resolution This article here will describe the method of using subscription instead of the polling method. In the polling method, the OPC-UA client periodically sends requests to the OPC-UA server to fetch the data values. While in the subscription method, the OPC-UA client establishes a long-lasting subscription with the OPC-UA server. The client does not need to send periodic requests; it simply waits for the server to push the data updates. This method is event-driven, as the client receives data only when there are actual changes in the values. It reduces network traffic and processing overhead since data is only transmitted when necessary. To use M580 OPC-UA client programming by subscription method, the attached document following here describes the steps to connect, create subscriptions and to add monitored items to the subscription. Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Schneider Electric.

How to use Data_Exch EF for Modbus communication

Issue Explicit messaging can be used more effectively instead of implicit messaging in a few use cases. E.g. polling multiple services devices connected through a Modbus TCP to serial gateway; or configuring event-based read/write communication instead of cyclic ones. EcoStruxure Control Expert provides many function blocks for explicit messaging. The Data_Exch block stands out as it allows to program any Modbus or Ethernet/IP query required by the users. However, from its user manual, it's not so clear on how to go about it. Resolution This article can be read as additional guidance to users apart from the block's user manual. Focus is on using this block for any Modbus query, and as an example, Function codes 22 and 23 are implemented. Usage of Data_Exch over Ethernet/IP is not included as it has been well described in an existing document. EcoStruxure Process Expert: Client and Scanner Modbus serial communication

Issue Using Modbus serial communication with third-party equipment requires complex logic to manage priorities and diagnostics. Resolution The General Purpose library (GPL) has powerful functions and only needs a simple configuration for the implementation of this communication. This document shows the implementation of a serial Modbus client and scanner communication, in EcoStruxure Process Expert. The GPL library is also available for EcoStruxure Control expert as a standalone library and the two examples described can be easily reused on this software platform.  Library link: https://shop.exchange.se.com/en-US/apps/66288/general-purpose-library-v2-for-ecostruxure-control-exp...
