Manage forced variables in a PLC program has been a challenge on the industry for decades. Ideally every plant manager wants a ZERO force policy but in real world this not possible and eventually a force must be put in place to ensure production KPIs. Then the challenge becomes how to manager those forces. The solution to manage forces is to give full transparency by showing the status of forced variables in a SCADA system where operation managers and maintenance managers could see and take the needful action to replace the damaged sensors and then removed the forces in the PLC program. This KB shows an easy way to manage forces through the OPC quality code by displaying it in the supervision system.

This knowledge base document do not intend to explain how to create a EPE supervision project but to give best practice advises on how to customize a EPE project based on General Purpose Library – GPL Situational Awareness. Software versions used in the kb: EcoStruxure Hybrid DCS 2019. GPL SA R2. This kb also apply to EcoStruxure Process Expert 2020 and further versions based on GPL SA. Issue This document outline some of the user experience with respect to supervision project performance while using EcoStruxure Hybrid DCS. Use cases are like slow page update, alarm / trend & communication errors when dealing with large scale projects. Background Many of us are experienced EcoStruxure Process Expert (formerly EcoStruxure Hybrid DCS) users. With our extensive experience, we normally just jump straight into any new versions of EcoStruxure Hybrid DCS and we are on our way. However, since EcoStruxure Hybrid DCS 2019, we have a choice to use either the Classic GPL, or the new and widely promoted Situation Awareness GPL. Using these SA GPL correctly requires the use of the correct SA styled page templates in Citect SCADA. This can be a discovery process to some, and it takes time. All control projects require some level of time synchronization. The time synchronization serves a fundamental role in any network, but it's too often added as an afterthought. However, it can mean the difference between correctly troubleshooting in minutes and returning the production to the desired level or having no idea about what caused production lost. The Network Time Protocol is a client-server protocol and has been widely adopted in all kind of Industries since 1985. It is a low-cost solution that can be easily applied for all EcoStruxure Process Expert architectures.

Background With the advent of IIoT integration into many industry solutions, one of the most common requests nowadays is with regards to the messaging. Objective In this knowledge base article, we will show how Citect can be made to send a message to Microsoft Teams. This is useful in situations where Citect needs to urgently alert a recipient on some critical matters occurring in the plant. Although this knowledge base is made around Microsoft Teams, the concept can be similarly applied to other messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Line and even Facebook Messenger. Issue Network management including performance monitoring is an important part of system diagnostics. Integration of the network monitoring system in the SCADA system provides a single window interface for the maintenance team. Resolution This article shows the different methods available for integrating ConneXium Network Manager into Citect SCADA. Similar steps can be followed for integration in other SCADA systems as well which have an OPC client driver or support ActiveX controls. Issue With the standard real-time data retrieval from controllers using Node Red or EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert, we must add Modbus addresses to Unity Pro/EcoStruxure Control Expert variables. This increases the deployment time and effort considering that there may be iterations leading to the final variable list. Since Modbus deals natively with bytes, and the Modbus nodes generally provide data in 16-bit numbers (int, word), they must be further converted to 32-bit types using additional nodes or JS functions. Bit extraction from words also need separate nodes. Often WiFi media is used to connect the EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor App on a tablet to the EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor runtime. The WiFi network and/or WiFi devices may not be secure. Hence, these must be placed in an untrusted zone separated from the trusted SCADA+Controller zone by a firewall. Incoming connections from untrusted zones to trusted zones should be avoided. Outgoing connections from the trusted zone to untrusted zones can be allowed and must be monitored. To protect the controller from accidental/malicious Modbus commands, a deep packet inspection firewall (E.g. Tofino) is required. Resolution As a proof-of-concept, this article proposes to write real-time data from CItect SCADA to the EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor Runtime via HTTP/json commands. This approach can mitigate the issues described above. Issue With today’s control system design and engineering techniques, it is easy to overwhelm a plant operator with alarms. Compliance to Alarm management standards and guidelines like ISA 18.2 and EEMUA 191 is also a key requirement. Alarm management is a continuous process and the alarm system itself is monitored during plant operation & maintenance for optimal performance. Alarm Adviser is a web-based alarm analysis tool that helps rationalize and identify nuisance alarms in the supervisory alarm system. Resolution Alarm Adviser is an easy to use tool which can be used for new as well as existing systems. The setup and configuration takes only a few minutes, but the analysis reports provide a wealth of information in a user-friendly format. Using this tool, the O&M Engineers can easily identify the nuisance or mis-configured alarms and optimize the alarm system to enhance the operator’s efficiency.
