I don't own anything that uses the said software, but I just want to note something.
A lot of Vista incompatible programs do not use the UAC, period. By default User Account Control (UAC) is enabled on Vista operating systems. You might get the flash saying "Should xxxxxxxx.exe run on this machine?" but that might not elevate it to administrator level.
1. Right click program and select "Run as Administrator." This will allow the program to run at the administrator level. Some programs that require updates might not trigger UAC and often fail to update.
2. Right click program and go to properties. In the compatibility tab set it to run under XP Home/Pro SP2. This one may or may not work, it's a hit and miss. A few legacy programs that use the floppy drive on my machine see it when set to either 98SE or XP (although can't use it anyways, just citing one example).
I hope that helps.

Email for the Registry Keys for PowerChute Personal Edition was sent @ 4:25pm EST.
However, please keep in mind that PCPE is not designed to work with Server 2003. You should be, at the very least, using a Smart-UPS SC and PowerChute Business Edition.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

For those of us that don't want to fool with the registry try using a free uninstall program called Revo Uninstall and look for leftover registry items using this program. It worked for me and I no longer am getting the unable to communicate message after reinstalling 2.1.1.

I don't have a list on me for Windows 2003. I'll need to record registry keys created during an install again or check with our software engineers to see if there is an active list of steps/keys. I'll post back when I do have more to provide.

Hi Derek,
Welcome to the APC Forum. Since manual removal of PCPE requires you to delete registry keys we strongly suggest that you call the APC Customer Care Center at 800-800-4272 and our technical support representative would be able to guide you over the phone.

Having the same problem as everyone else.
Upgraded to SMT1500. Upgraded to PowerChute edition that came with that unit. (PowerChute Business Edition 8.5)
I will NOT under any circumstances respond to the uninstall command - not the console, server OR agent.
Like others I am extremely disappointed that a company of your size and reputation has not gotten this situation resolved after all these months, thus adding to my clients' support costs.
Please provide the instructions at your earliest convenience or supply a true uninstaller that works!
Thanks!

when clicking on the link, it says the file is not found, accessing using FTP tool like CUTEFTP shows an empty directory where the 2.2 was.

Erasmus,
I'm working on a system (Windows 2003 Server) that has APC PowerChute Personal Edition installed. I cannot upgrade it to Business Edition nor uninstall it. Some of the posts I've read have some registry info but some do not coinside with the Windows 2003 Server keys.
Would you be kind to formard to me the instructions to unsitall PCPE from a Windows 2003 Server?
Much thanks...

I am also unable to completely uninstall V2.1 from a home office Vista 32 SP1 PC. The reason I uninstalled is that I was getting too many bogus event log errors and warning messages when hibernating or sleeping the PC: "cannot communicate with UPS". So I used APC's instructions to just uninstall Powerchute, disconnect the USB cable to my Back ES 500, reboot the PC, and plug the USB cable back in. The Vista PC did detect the UPS and create the "Batteries" device in the device manager, but did NOT add Battery mode to the power options power plans. When I disconnect the wall socket power from the UPS, the PC does NOT receive any notification at all.
Since the same procedure worked fine on a new Vista PC (the Battery power plans are visible in the Power Options) that had never seen PowerChute, I presume the reason it is not working on this PC is that remnants of PowerChute 2.1 remain in the Registry and perhaps elsewhere. I see many leftover keys in the Registry, for instance.
Please send me the instructions to completely remove PowerChute 2.1 and to make the Battery Power Plans work in Vista. Thanks, Gary

Your registry editing instructions are okay as far as they go, but incomplete (they did not work). The real problem is that the APC device driver is still loaded for the "Batteries" device after the uninstallation of PowerChute 2.1. A generic HID UPS Battery driver is needed instead. Here are the additional instructions needed; please add to your Knowledgebase:
1. Open Windows Vista Device Manager.
2. Right-click and Uninstall any and all BATTERIES devices (especially the APC battery). It is critical that you also select the checkbox to "Remove the device driver files".If you do not delete the device driver files for the Batteries, this procedure will not work!
3. Right-click and remove any APC USB UPS device under the device category Human Interface Devices.
4. Disconnect UPS cable at APC UPS
5. Turn up your speaker volume and Reboot
6. Plug the APC UPS into the USB port. You should hear a Windows sound as the UPS device driver software is installed.
7. Open the Device Manager and notice that now under the Batteries device, the Battery is named "HID UPS Battery". The word "APC" must not appear under Batteries (it still does appear under Human Interface Devices).
8. Under Control Panel->Power Options, the "On Battery" power plan options now appear. Set your computer to hibernate within 5 minutes when on battery power and you will get a graceful shutdown when the power fails.

If you ran the uninstall script already, try to reinstall the program and try again (I know basic stuff). If that does not work, download and run CCclean. This is a popular registry/temp file cleaner. If that still does not work there are 2 or 3 files that get entered into the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\APC
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurentControlSet\Services
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services
Additionally, you will need to look for PowerChute Personal Edition and APC UPS Services. "PCPE" is another keyword you could try in the registry, depending on if you did a default install or not.
