PowerLogic Ion 8650 Offline Meter Data Report

I am looking for advice on how to program the Ion 8650 meter using the Ion Setup software to save meter information in a report for offline use.  I read Ion meters in the field but I can figure out how to save the data from the meter so I can look at it later when I am back at the office.  There seems to be a few tools to save some information in Reports and Verification meter registers but ideally I would like to create a report that lists lots of meter information in one place.  That way I don't have to review a bunch of different CSV and TXT files.

The report it sounds like you want is called "Meter Configuration" as shown below:

Robert_Lee_2-1716495394589.png

Robert_Lee_4-1716495430305.png

The default report does not include phasor information but could be modified using Notepad to include such information (since it sounds like you are using the US Solutions group template, it is best to contact them to see if they can add that information to the report).

There's no easy way to save everything into some singular fashion and even if this was to occur somehow, different users would want to load different portions (load profile into Excel for charting for example which wouldn't like the extra Event, Meter Config, phasor being in there).  This would require some type of *post processing step" to gleam data out of any singular file.

PLES (PowerLogic Engineering Suite) is being developed as an ION Setup replacement so I will pass your suggestion on to that team.  It has a database at its disposal so it might be easier to facilitate such a request but even it has some limitations and will likely be a very long ways off from having this functionality if ever.

Hi @Steven_DelRossi

Kindly check the similar post: ION setup - Complete data set download from a meter

As mentioned in that post, there is a data collection wizard in ION Setup -> Setup Assistant -> Reports -> Data Collection which will write information into one XML file.

Thank you.

Hello Mehran,

How do I get to the Data Collection wizard?  I am seeing the following information in ION Setup when I navigate to the Reports screen.  The ION meter I am reading is an ION 8650.  I am using ION Setup version 3.2.24038.02.  The screen looks like the following screenshot below.

Thank you very much,

Keep in mind that the Data Collection XML file was built specifically for the importing of that data into PME (via ETL).  ION Setup primary function is a configuration/trouble shooting tool and while it has developed many functions over the years is not meant as some inexpensive (free) reporting tool.

One could figure out how the XML data is formatted but you'd likely have to spend months developing applications which could process that data and do proper reporting.  You could use VBA in Excel or other 3rd party applications to process the number of CSV/Text files as well.

Hi @Steven_DelRossi
You are using latest version of ION setup.

What is the firmware version of ION8650? I can see Data Collection tab in ION8650 with fw version V403.(latest is V4.40)

Hello Mehran,

Yes I updated the meter firmware in all of our Ion 8650s to version 4.40.1 a couple of years ago because I heard there was a network security issue with the prior firmware version.  Do you think that the Data Collection feature was removed with this meter firmware upgrade?

Thank you very much,

Steve Del Rossi

There seems to be a typo in the US Solution group setup assistant files.

Do the following procedure to fix the issue.

1. Run Notepad by selecting it from the Start Menu and going to the More -> Run as Administrator option.  If you don't do the step, you'll won't be able to save the necessary changes.

Robert_Lee_1-1716397006428.png

2. Once Notepad is open, go to the following folder: C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Schneider Electric\IONSetup\Tables\PML8650.

3. Go to sub-folder for whichever option is highlighted when you view Device Properties -> Display.

Robert_Lee_0-1716396907895.png

So in the above case, you'd proceed into the Feature Set A V4.2 US folder).
3. Next make sure the file type you are attempting to open is set to All Files and select the QUICKION.CFG file to open.

4. Once the file is loaded, go to the bottom of the file and you will see something like the following:
[Reports]
TabCount=1
Tab1=Meter Info
Tab1Type=2
Tab1Text=Allows you to view/store meter information.

5. Modify the line that says TabCount=1 to TabCount=2 so it should look like the following:

[Reports]
TabCount=2
Tab1=Meter Info
Tab1Type=2
Tab1Text=Allows you to view/store meter information.

6. Save the changes and click off the Reports and back on and the Data Collection tab should appear.

Another possible temporary solution would be to select a different option via the Device Properties -> Display (any non-US option), perform the data collection and then revert back to the previous setting.  There may be a reason the US solutions group version of the setup assistant is purposely hiding the data collection option.

Hello Robert,

Thank you for the information.  That fixed the Data Collection tab in Ion Setup for me.  I can now create the XML file you were talking about.  The information in the XML file does not look like the report information that I am looking for.  The XML has the events, load profile data and waveforms including voltage readings, current readings, power factor, etc.  The load profile data is one part of the report I would like to put together but it is only one part of the report.

I am looking for a report that shows detailed information about the meter that a Meter Technician would want to save as a reference when they are back in the office.  I am thinking that the reports they will need to save are available in Ion Setup but they are a bunch of different reports and files.  For example, the Techs like to save the phasor diagrams as part of their report.  They can go to Verification in Ion Setup and select Phasor Viewer and save that information.  They also like to save a snapshot of recent load profile data so they can do that by going to Reports and selecting Load Profile and viewing it and then saving it.  I think the Meter Techs will need a Word document listing the different locations of information they need for their report and how to save it.  They will have to follow some kind of a checklist of steps to get the various information needed for their report.  Other meter products and meter software come with a prebuilt diagnostics report that lists out various aspects of the meter, like the serial number, firmware version, Ke values for the load profile data channels,  event log, along with the instantaneous register readings, currents and voltages and phasor diagram.  We can do that with Ion Setup but it will require more steps to get to each information and will need to be saved on site while connected to the meter with Ion Setup.  Other products save the "readings" in a file that can be read later on when the Meter Tech is offline.  This might be a good future enhancement to Ion Setup if enough utilities request it.

Thank you,

Steve Del Rossi

Hello @emad.bek ,

I would suggest starting a new post rather than replying to an old post. I am sorry that I do not quite understand the problem you are having. Perhaps if you start a new post you can share screenshots to explain what is happening.

Regards,

Charles
