I logged into the unit via the web interface with the default username of "apc" and default password of "apc". Used IE of course since Firefox isn't supported.
I went and tried to change the username and password. I used a complicated password that had capital letters and an Exclaimation point "!" in it. And I change the username to "admin". I hit ok and it said are you sure, and I said "yes". Now I can't log in. It is like it scrambled my password. I'm 100% sure I know the password, and since the password box didn't obfuscate it, I know i didn't misstype it when I originally typed it in.
I tried popping the front cover off of the unit and doing a manual reset with a paperclip. I did that while the unit was turned on, with the unit turned off, and even with the unit unplugged. Tried it for 5 seconds like the manual says, even tried for up to 30 seconds. Tried holding it while powering it off, unplugging, and powering on. Nothing works. When I try to log back in with the original username/password of apc/apc, it won't take it.
What can I do? Is this defective and do I need to return the unit to the place of purchase? Is there another way I can reset the password? maybe some other utility I can run?
Thanks in advance!
Dave

Credentials for AB0846823097 please.
Failing that - information on how to disable the audible alarm without having to turn off the UPS would be welcome....

Hi
********* solved
I have the same problem with BH500NET. I used a password with an exclamation mark and now I can't get back in.
From the web browser:
Technical Parameters
Model: APC Back-UPS HS 500
Serial number: AB0919800708
Firmware revision: l1
Web firmware revision: l5
UPS date of manufacture (mm-dd-yyyy): 05-04-2009
Battery replacement date (mm-dd-yyyy): 05-04-2009
Can you please send me the backdoor password so I can reset the UPS?
Thanks in advance
Evan

The logon page says valid entries are 20 or fewer characters in length, which "backupshs" fits in, for both username and password. That's why I figured it might be that it had "backups" in it.

I'm considering buying the Back-UPS HS 500 but a quick Google search brought up this thread. Given how many months this thread has been going for, I'm really surprised there is no official statement about this.
One of the things that caught my attention with this unit is the fact I could administer it over the network using a web interface. However I've seen a few really disappointing aspects of this device 1) firmware not upgradable (unheard of these days for this type of device), 2) doesn't work with Firefox - a strong indication that is uses some old fashioned non-standards compliant web interface that surely must be desperately in need of updating, 3) doesn't accept secure passwords.
The frustrating thing is, I cannot find any alternative products. The lack of Mac software for the other UPS's is quite frustrating - whilst I do like the simplicity of being able to configure the essentials such as shut down times etc within OS X, there are features unavailable such as doing run time tests.
My preference would be for APC to provide network accessibility for all models, and for them to run in all modern browsers.

I, too, wish APC had better OS X support.
I'm not sure if you've looked into the latest SmartUPS. The LCD display allows configuring the UPS without needing a computer, and you can install a Network Management Card into the SmartSlot which has (in my extremely biased opinion) a modern web interface that is usable on the Mac and is better than PCBE on Windows. You can check it out [the test drive here|http://testdrive.apc.com/card.htm].

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately the Smart-UPS are a bit too expensive for my requirements, especially with the network card added. I'm currently using a Back-UPS RS 1500 with an additional battery pack which is fine for my needs.
I did a quick Google and found there is an open source project, and installed APCUPSD which has allowed me to perform a battery runtime calibration and change settings such as alarm etc. This is really all I was missing. Unfortunately it's not very use friendly - you need to run things like apctest in the terminal. I think for every day use the built in OS X support is nicer, but with my UPS being nearly 5 years old I thought I'd see what the runtime was like now.
I've ordered the HS500 - if it really does require access using Explorer I'll have to use VMWare. Daft really - using a web interface not making it universally accessible.

I apoligize to everyone being notified by this thread; but it appears that this is the place to get your "Exclamatory" problem problem resolved promptly. Lockout from ! in password on a Model: APC Back-UPS HS 500
Serial number: AB0733821287
A side note: I wish APC would expand on this type of UPS and improve its functionality like adding a JAVA based single station KVM over IP allowing the user not only the ability to Hard Power Cycling a machine remotely but also being able to get into the bios remotely.

Well, while you're at it, give me mine. AB0736827210
So while I'm here, I have another grave concern about this unit other than the atrocious web interface. First off, I noted from a previous post that these things are being sold recently still with firmware I1/I5. Well, mine was manufactured in September 2007 and it has the same firmware. Really? 5 years with the same buggy firmware? What is scarier is that the copyright message on the login page is from 2002. So while this thread is approaching its 2nd birthday with no forward looking statements from APC, the issue has been around much longer, at least 5 years and as much as a decade... OK, here's my problem.
So this unit has been sitting unused for a while, and of course the battery is flat. Well, while I was waiting to get a new one, I disconnected the old one, then logged into the thing to make sure it was still communicating. It picked up a DHCP address, I logged into it with the defaults, and to my surprise, it told me the battery was fully charged and I had 57 minutes of runtime available. Ran a self test, no change. Pretty good runtime for no battery.
Hmm, an update. I just unplugged the thing to make sure I hadn't actually had a battery in there, (I didn't) and it powered down. Now, when I plug it in, it buzzes loudly in bizarre patterns while the on battery light flashes constantly. I tried reconnecting the battery, which had just a little juice, and it changed pitch, shifting whining sounds, I can't turn it off from the button, no network interface, etc. My coworker got annoyed and I had to unplug it. I think it's toast.

While I am sad to see that this thread was even required, and has achieved nearly 10 pages or posts, I am happy that it was able to help so many people resolve the issues that I too had. I sure hope somebody at APC is paying attention to this and makes sure their programmer handle passwords better, and provide error messages for passwords that they consider invalid. (I am a programmer by trade, and this was just some real bad quality control here) Its a shame that I'm currently stuck with a backup that is in my mind carrying a huge defect in it, but that is just something I'll have to take care of during my next backup purchase decision.
