This ION9000 FAQ is intended to give an early release of technical information that relate to the release of the ION9000

Installation and Retrofit

Question:  Can the ION9000 fit into a ION7650 cutout.

Answer:     The ION9000 will fit into the existing cutout with no modifications.  The four studs fit into the corners and are secured with nuts.  Washers  will be placed between the panel and the adapter plate to limit the pressure on the gasket.

Question:  What is the current plan for the ION750 withdrawal?

Answer:     Most part numbers will be withdrawn after the ION9000 has been released for a year.  Exceptions include:  Low Voltage CT's, Low Voltage DC power supply, fiber ethernet, RMICAN, and OFGEM.

Display

Question:  Do I need to turn the meter off to swap / replace the display?

Answer:     Due to =S= safety policy, the meter must be powered down before working inside or on any power equipment.  The remote display can be hot swapped, as long as the user it not working inside a live cabinet.

Question:   Can the small PM8000 display be used on the ION9000.

Answer:     Yes however the small display must be upgraded to the minimum

Question:   Will the ION9000 display work on the PM8000.

Answer:     No.

Question:   Can you use two displays on the ION9000

Answer:     No the device only supports one display.

I/O

Question:  Do I need to turn the meter off to swap / replace the IO cards?

Answer:     Due to =S= safety policy, the meter must be powered down before working inside or on any power equipment.  Note that no damage will occur if it is done powered up; however, the cards will not be recognized until the next power up.

Question:  Can we use the ION9000 meters to trip the circuit breakers?

Answer:     Meter should not be used as protection device but it can be used as a control device for non-critical applications. Hence, we should not use it to trip the circuit breakers. but we can configure the meter to alarm on any PQ issue including harmonics.

Question:  What options are available for IO on the ION9000?

Answer:     Onboard:

                           - 8 Digital inputs with 24Vdc wetting voltage

                           - 4 Digital outputs (solid state)

                           - 2 form C relay outputs (rated for 8A @ 250V)

                  Expansion:

                           - Digital option module

                                o 6 Digital inputs with wetting voltage

                               o 2 form C relay outputs (rated for 8A @ 250V)

                          - Analog option module

                                o 4 Analog inputs (4 to 20mA or 0 to 30V)

                                o 2 Analog outputs (4 to 20mA or 0 to 10V)

Question:  How many options modules does the meter support?

Answer:    You may have up to 4 option cards attached to the meter at one time.

Logging:

Question:  What is the bandwidth of a captured waveform?

Answer:     The ION9000 introduces “extended waveform capture” that allows up to 30 cycles of pre-event waveform records at 1024 and 30 cycles of event data.  This waveform recorder can then be retriggered to extend the waveform for up to 180 cycles. It can then re-trigger that capture for a user defined number of captures limited by memory which is 2Gb for ION9000.

Question:  Is the ION9000 memory expandable?

Answer:    The ION9000 has 2 GB of memory by default.   A future enhancement will allow the installation of a micro SD memory card that can be up to 32 GB.

Question:  What is the max length of a waveform recorder?

Answer:     ION9000 has 2GB onboard memory, the ION7650 has 10MB. ION9000 can store up to 10MB per channel for waveforms (this could be minutes for each channel.

Question:  Will digital certificates be available for HTTPs?

Answer:     A default certificate will be shipped from manufacturing, however it is recommended customers create their own certificate and load it onto the meter.

Communications

Question:  Can the meter communicate with two Modbus Masters?

Answer:     Yes

Question:  What communcations hardware does the device support?

Answer:     The ION9000 supports 2 Ethernet ports and 2 RS485 ports.

Question:  Can the Ethernet communications ports be daisy chained?

Answer:     Yes

Specifications

Question:  Could you please elaborate on the savings calculation for extra accuracy?

Answer: The calculations can be in the whitepaper: A high accuracy standard for electricity meters​

Question:  Will the external CT's influence the meters accuracy claims?

Answer:    It is in the benefit of the customer to have accurate CT's however by not doing so will not change the fact the meter is twice as precise than any competitors meter.

Question:  What is the new standard for class 0.1S accuracy? When will it be published?

Answer:     Accuracy requirements for IEC class 0.1S will be in the 2nd edition of IEC62052-11/IEC62053-22; publiction is expected in 2018; this standard will not allow "partial" compliance with class requirements;Accuracy requirements for ANSI class 0.1 are in the ANSI C12.20-2015 (NEMA 2017).

Question:  What's the difference between class 0.1 and 0.1S?

Answer:     Technically, only class 0.1S will be part of the IEC62053-22 standard. The "S" refers to the meter accuracy and range characteristics which should match the characteristics of an external "S" class transformer to ensure optimal performance.

Question:  Why do the current connections need to be so robust if the max current that will flow there is 5A?

Answer:     The specification for the ION9000 is for the current inputs to be rated to 20A continuous, so they have been designed to handle this amount of current.  The “robust” look is mainly due to the requirement to have “captured” screws, which is partly driving the size and spacing of each input.  The other factor driving the spacing is the size of the active current transformers

Question:  What is the accuracy for harmonic readings?

Answer:     2.0% per IEC 61557-12 for both voltage & current.

Question:  Can the ION9000 detect a low battery?

Answer:     There are event log entries when the meter real-time clock battery gets low. It is also available as a diagnostic register via ION and could be exposed via other protocols (ex Modbus) by customizing the meter configuration.

TimeSyncing

Question:  What timesync options are available on the ION9000?

Answer:      • Time synchronization is possible via:

                         Precision network time protocol (PTP) based on IEEE 1588 / IEC 61588.

                         GPS clock (RS-485) or IRIG-B (digital input) to ±1 millisecond.

                         Network Time Protocol (NTP/SNTP).

                         Automatic time synchronization available through Schneider Electric software server.

Event Notification

Question:  What event notification options are available?

Answer:     Meter has alarming and control function:

                         - 50+ definable alarms to log critical event data, trigger waveform recording,

or perform control function.

                         - Trigger on any condition, with 1/2-cycle and 1-second response time.

                         - Combine alarms using Boolean logic enabling customization of alarms.

                         - Alarm notification via email.

                         - In conjunction with Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure software, alarms,software alarms, and alarm frequency are categorized and trended

enabling sequence of events and root cause analyses.

Features

Question:  Will supra-harmonics be supported?

Answer:     The initial release will not support supra-harmonics, however it is currently on the radar for a future release.

Question:  Is there a cyber security standard ION9000 will comply with?

Answer:     We will be standardizing on IEC62443, however compliance will not come with the first release.  We will complete PEN testing and be working towards Achilies certification.

Question:  Will the ION9000 be RMICAN certified?

Answer:     Yes, however the RMICAN process can only be started after production units are manufactured, certification typically can take up to a year to accomplish.

Question:  What are the current plans for OFGEM and CoP options?

Answer:     Once production units are available  we will be seeking approvals for Cop 1, 2 and 3, during this process the existing ION7650 OFGEM references will remain active.

Question:  Will the Low Voltage CT option be available?

Answer:     This will not be available at launch, currently it is proposed for the R2 release in 2020.

Question:  What improvements are we making to ION modules?

Answer:     On 1st release module types are very similar to the selection available on the ION7650; however, some module types will see a 30% increase in capacity.

Question:  Will the ION9000 support IEEE519?

Answer:     Yes, The evaluation applied in the ION9000 will be according to the 2014 version of the standard.

Question:  Will ION9000 R1 include PQDIF?

Answer:     PQDIF support is provided through PME software.  The meter natively provides COMTRADE files for all captured waveforms.

Question:  How do you configure the device to capture waveforms of short circuit current before and after it trips a breaker?

Answer:    The meter can capture a waveform on short circuit current and breaker trip in a couple of ways.   First on short circuit current, you could configure a current swell alarm with a setpoint high enough to prevent nuisance alarms yet within the range of the measurement CT to prevent clipping.  If you wanted to be very sure, you could use a Boolean to combine a current swell with a voltage dip.  This would give you a short circuit indication.  For breaker trip, the easiest way is to connect the trip contact from the breaker into an input on the meter and trigger a waveform from that input.  The meter can capture several cycles prior to the event, so small delays are no issue.

Question:  What types of disturbances is Disturbance Direction Detected triggered on?

Answer:     Disturbance Direction Detection (DDD) is applied for “disturbance alarms” which include sags (dips), swells and transients (ION7650)

Question:  Why have 5 measureable currents on the device?

Answer:     5 current inputs can be used to measure 3 phase + Neutral + Ground currents. The ground current can offer an indication of Power Quality issues in the system

Re Memory

We have ION7650's being replaced with ION9000's. On moving the Designer frameworks across, the ION9000 runs out of memory. Is there a workaround or fix available? I would have expected more modules and more memory to be available in the 9000.

Hi Shaun - good to hear from you.  Hoping you can elaborate on "out of memory" a bit.  I have attached an image of what I assume you are seeing.  There are many more modules available on the ION9000 vs. the 7650, so right now I am assuming that you are seeing module obsolescence vs. being out of memory.  If this is the case, the first thing to note is that there are new harmonics modules (same as PM8000/7400) that replace the ones the 7650 had - this is in order to support new standards and updated standards.  To make an ION9000 framework, I would suggest you save any custom logic as sub-frameworks from your 7650 and then paste those on a default ION9000 framework.

In Desinger, there are 2 different ways to paste a framework. Locked paste and non locked paste. Do you know which version you were doing? The locked paste will overwrite the module numbers, the unlocked paste will add the next available module. Therefore if a full ION7650 framework is pastes on the ION9000, it would be almost equivelent to 2 separat frameowrks being pasted on the meter. Almost is important as many modules are only present once in a meter's template, therefore the paste will fail as the module already exists.

There are a number of features, standards etc that depend on specific components being present in the meter. A lock paste could potentiall overwrite some of this without overwriting the entire section of framework. Therefore I do not recommend pasting the entire ION7650 framework onto the ION9000 meter. As Tom mentioned, it is possible to paste a framelet that has just the custom work.

@sesa208600_brid (Zoltan) and @Andy_Hubert please could you elaborate on the issues. I believe the error message was memory related however.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for your response and suggestions. The engineers who have had these issues are very experienced and understand the lock paste vs non lock so this is not likely to be the issue. They were simply loading a custom framework same as they have previously done in ION7650's, but this time in an ION9000.

...update, @sesa208600_brid Zoltan updated the firmware on the ION9000 to the latest and now he is able to paste the modules. I believe he could not paste more than 59 data recorder modules before this. Seems ok now 🙂

Hi Shaun - did you have a beta unit by chance?  We have an imminent maintenance release coming, but only the released firmware exists for the ION9000 right now, so I am a bit confused by the "upgraded firmware" resolution.

We are also interested in any insights the team had in porting their 7650 frameworks to the 9K so we can collect best practices.

I hope to make it to the UK again !  I am not in a marketing role at this point, so I am not travelling as much these days.

Note of clarification on the harmonic accuracy for the ION9000:

The ION9000 has better than 1% accuracy according to IEC 61557-12 for both voltage and current.

The ION9000 has full and traceable compliance to IEC 62586-1 as a PQI-A-FI1.
A component of this compliance includes IEC 61000-4-30 Class A performance.
The harmonic accuracy required for Class A performance varies from 0.05% to 0.8% of nominal.
