Which APC power backup do I need?
I have an HP TouchSmart running Windows Vista. It is a home PC used mostly for internet, word processing, and a large genealogy program. I have an external hard drive to save my data, but I need a power supply backup since my area of rural middle Tennessee has begun having sudden short power outages with no warning. The APC site lists model details, but I am not sure which one I need, especially what wattage I need. I only need a few minutes backup, enough to close programs and shut down.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think that a home UPS-Inverter will be suit for you. You can see the similiar picture at the attached files. And for more details, you can view East's UPS power official site.

do you know how much power that HP device consumes? what is the size of the power supply? ultimately, we need to know the power draw of each device and then we can get a better idea. amps/watts are usually printed on each device's sticker or power supply if you can take a peek.
i mean for any average PC, we can start looking at a BX1000G or BR1000G. maybe something a little bigger/smaller depending on the power draw.

Thanks for the help. I couldn't find any information about the power draw in the manuals or on the computer power supply itself. Luckily, I am no longer snowed in and was able to get out to Office Max where a very helpful techie helped me find the one I need. I bought an APC, not cheap, but worth not having the worry about crashing the hard drive due to a power outage.
