We’re seeing utilities utilizing different Meter Data Managements (MDM) systems today and aren’t solely relying on Itron’s MV90 application for collecting meter data. Some of these systems and solutions work directly with AMI systems. Our ION meters have long been supported by MV90 and PrimeRead, but don’t use AMI communications or data formats.
We’ve worked with NISC to develop a solution that works with their solutions utilizing a CMEP format for presenting interval data. We’ve found some other MDMs support CMEP or similar formatting for energy data. Below is an example string for a billing reading example:
MEPMD02,19970819,AMIVENDOR,3245617_1,TRICO,10002346,201001310855,892341,OK,E,KWHREG,,1,200801310000,200801310000,1,TOTAL,R,35281.101

MEPMD02,19970819,AMIVENDOR,3245617_1,TRICO,10002346,201001310855,892341,OK,E,KW,,1,200801310000,200801310000,1,TOTAL,R,5.281
The CMEP Adapter spec lists which columns are necessary or required, and the format that data should be presented. The main issue building this within the ION meter data recorders is the number of string registers used in data string, how time stamps are presented yyyyMMddHHmm, and specific tags used by the adapter. First time stamp is time of read by AMI system, and second time stamp is the time the record was recorded in the meter.
We developed a system using EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME) to collect all the data from the meters, and an ETL to pair and extract the data and then load it into a CMEP format file. The Load function had to build in the data format of the adapter as well as account for additional string values for SenderID and RecieverID, and tables that correlate ION Data type to a correlated CMEP Commodity or Quality Code.
Using an ETL to build custom data tables, we can also support other file formats! Our ION meters have the revenue, TOU, peak, and power quality information and events recorded. The key is exporting in a format that is useable by your system. If you have further question reach out to your contact the US Power & Grid Sales team for more information.
