Setting Current Probe in ION7650

Hi all,

I have a configure like image below.

Probe.PNG

I use Current Transformer: 5A/333mV, clamp secondary current of Current Transformer: 1600/5A.

So, Rate i will set in ION7650 with Current Probe: 1600/0.333V

After, I setting like Current Probe documents guide: kctstp CT‐1600A‐0.333V 1600 0.333 2.5 1 44.

Can you help me, is it setting that right?

Thanks very much

Is your meter ordered to be calibrated for use with current probes?

Hi Ta,

Based on the  PowerLogic® ION7550 / ION7650 Current Probe Input Option PRODUCT OPTION document, I think that you created a valid Calibration Command, except the current probe’s phase angle in degrees for constant phase compensation - I would connect a test load and check it.

Hi Bojan,

Yes! I know. But i don't know setting " Phase Angle", so I setting like it default guide document.

Can you talk me, how i determine value "Phase Angle"

Thanks very much

Assuming you ordered your meter *without* probes and are using your own probes, then if you require accurate energy readings, then you will need to get the phase angle information from the probe manufacturer (if they aren't provided with the probes themselves).

From the Current Probe documentation:

Whether basic setup is necessary depends on your Current Probe Input Option.

Basic Setup is NOT required:

If your ordering option includes factory supplied current probes and a meter

factory‐calibrated to match the current probe specifications (option “A” above).

Basic Setup IS required:

If your meter ordering option does not include current probes that have been

factory‐calibrated with the meter (option “B” above). In this case, you need to set

up the transformation ratio for the current probes you will be using. If energy

readings accuracy is important, then you need to set up the phase angle specified

by the current probes manufacturer.

hello,

our suggestions of setup

After, I setting like Current Probe documents guide: kctstp CT‐5A‐0.333V 5 0.333 2.5 1 44

after this setup you should configure the meter to USER defined 1. Default current probe is factory

after this setup you should setup the CT ratio : 1600A in primary field and 5A in secondary

hope it helps

The main issue is how to measure and compensate phase angle error β in the current transformer and probe from the image above:

hello,

the phase angle correction is litle bit simple. But it apply to phase angle error of current clamp.

The correctiion of TC (1600-5A) is not required, the typical error of this CT is 0,3 or 0,6 but also could be done using ITC feature.

Regarding to current clamp 10A used. Here we perform the correction and get good acurracy (up to 0.2% in 0,5 power factor - worst case)

Tipicall we use 10-1V current clamps but the method is same to other secondary voltages.

The step is simple but need stable power source and reference standard meter

then you can correct the phase angle based on power factor reading from meter.

is recomend adjust amplitude using 5A power factor = 1

in second step adjust phase angle at power factor 0.5 lag and curent 5A

from power factor is possible to get the phase angle.

Dear Mr.Bojan,

The current input is option F, claribrated for current probes. Meter ref: M7650A1F0B5F1A0C

We use it together with attached current probe 5A/0.333 V.

May you help to take a look and advise is there anything wrong with hardware selection?

Thank you very much!

Best regards,

Cong

Hi Ta,

The hardware selection looks Ok to me. My only concern in regards to the current probe is that you are measuring the secondary current of the CT which is not a common solution due to unknown to phase angle error which is a result of the both, current probe and current transformer, angles.

Best Regards,

Bojan

Hi Ta,

I think that the only way to measure the angle in you case is to connect a test load and calibrate the meter.

HI Bojan,

This is image when i setting ION 7650 current probe.

i using current clamp with ratio 5A:333mV

1. When i setting code in User Define 1, and setup in ION7650 with Define 1, result wrong.

Code.PNG

DF1.PNG

DF_RS.PNG

2. But, when i setting with other code, result true.

Code2.PNG

DF2.PNG

DF2_RS.png

3. This is result true with ampe clamp

AMpe.PNG

=> It means, when i code with ratio same ratio 5:333mV of current clamp 5A: 333mV, so result wrong and when i code with ratio 5A:0.495mV of current clamp 5A: 333mV result true.

Can you see and give me advise? Thanks very much

hello,

this issue have nothing to do with phase angles.

in this case we also suggest you check current probes of channel b AND c connecting the three clamps in the same cable them check the current reading.

my suggestion is also increase the load of test up to 5A the response of clamps in nominal current is better than 10% and also you multimeter scale is 200A and measure 0,5A maybe cannot give good result to compare.

What is your CT setting they should be the ratio of the CT the clamps hooked to ? You must set CT ratio accordingly. The user define 1 5A to .333V is correct.
