ION8650 Meter Is Not Allowing Data Read Even Though TCP Port 502 Is Open

My PrimeRead system is able to access and call the meter each hour with no issues but a second party we work with at the meter site accesses the meter data via TCP Port 502.  This is what they said; "

It looks like we can ping the meter and can see that the TCP Port 502 is open. We cannot pull values from the device itself regardless of the pull we are attempting. You would need to contact the manufacturer to troubleshoot it further since the device is not sending us data."

Anyone have any ideas?  This issue just started in the last week (10/7/25)

Hello Charles,

They are getting an error message in their Modpoll stating Reply Timeout on this meter compared to what they normally see and continue to see on a sister meter; -1.  I compared both meters for any changes and compared modbus information and Event Logs and I think the issue is with either their connection from their meter to a data logger or the data logger for that meter is having issues.  I am going to have them test those non-meter elements and then go from there now that I see that error message.  Any ideas are appreciated.  Thank you for your help!

Hello @cchapman_AMP ,

From description alone I cannot say what is happening. Did they give you any details about "We cannot pull values"? Are they getting N/A values, Modbus exceptions, other? Did you check that meter's settings or Modbus slave modules have not been changed? Is your PrimeRead system also using Modbus on Port 502?

If more troubleshooting is needed, likely you will want to contact your local technical support and start a case.

Regards,

Charles
