ION Setup now accepts restoring meter settings from register temporary files

While restoring a dcf template to an ION 9000 meter with ION Setup I've noticed there is a new option available to "Restore settings from previous paste".  This prompts for a .TMP Register temporary file, but I cannot find through the Setup Assistant menus or ION Setup's help files where this file can be created from.  Any insights are greatly appreciated.

When performing a normal template paste settings which you may want to retain that have already been set in the device are uploaded and stored in a temporary file (with a TMP extension).  This is the option shown in the dialog as Keep these settings as shown in your dialog.

If a template operation is successful, the temporary file is deleted automatically by ION Setup.

What occurs during the normal process is that those settings are read from the device and stored in a temporary file in a temp location.  Upgrade or template paste operation then begin and as a result the settings are reset in the device itself.  If for whatever reason, that operation would not complete, there was no way previously to somehow reuse the settings that are still stored in that temporary file (obviously uploading reset settings in the device again would be not desirable at all).

This new option would allow the user to bypass having to upload reset values, or just taking the ones in the template (which may not be applicable either) and selecting one from the previous failed operation (keep in mind this likely has to be done immediately as doing another similar operation will overwrite the same temporary file again).

Hello @sesa197217_brid ,

When first pasting a template, or upgrading a meter, when you select one or more settings to be saved, This primes PME what settings to save. Then before the template paste or firmware upgrade starts the .tmp file is saved in a temporary folder. If you look for %temp% in address bar you will find your temp folder. In this folder is one called ION Setup1 or just ION Setup. The .tmp file is saved to this folder and over written for each meter.

This file is only created just before pasting or upgrading a meter, When to see IOn Setup saying something like saving registers.

Regards,

Charles

Thanks Charles, to clarify, can this only be taken advantage of if you're able to use both PME and ION Setup?  Also, is the .TMP file only created after an initial paste using the "Keep these settings on the device" option?

When selecting the "Restore settings from a previous paste" option ION Setup does default to the "ION Setup 1" directory within the Temp folder.

Hello @sesa197217_brid ,

This is only ION Setup, PME does not come into play with this at all. Only ION Setup creates the file, only ION Setup can use the file. This is not a partial framework, this is specific settings for specific registers. The directory in the temp folder may be slightly different for your system.

Regards,

Charles
