How to get ION Setup to allow a serial COM port higher than 16
By default, ION Setup allows users to select serial COM ports between 1 and 16. If required, users can modify the IONSETUP.INI file to allow access to higher number COM ports.
Use the following procedure:
- Locate the IONSETUP.INI file by opening the Options dialog under Tools -> Options (or clicking on the checkbox icon on the toolbar). Copy the folder location from the Config Directory edit box into a Windows Explorer address bar to open the folder location.
- Open the IONSETUP.INI file with NOTEPAD or any other text editor.
- Locate the Communications section (ex. [Communications]) or create a new section at the bottom of the file if one isn't already present. Find/create the SerialPorts entry to indicate the maximum number of serial COM ports ION Setup should allow (ex. SerialPorts=32). Increasing the number will decrease the number of available Ethernet gateway sites (shouldn't be an issue unless we have over 200 sites) so keep the number as small as possible.
- Restart ION Setup and it should expose the additional serial ports from the droplist of available serial ports.
