3P PowerTag for single phase load

Hi All,

Is it possible to use F63 (3P+N, 1570) and F160 (3P+N, 1580) to measure single-phase load?

Do they need to be powered on with all voltage inputs X/Y/Z or can be powered with single voltage input X?

Thank you

Hello,

Many remarks about your question:

  • For security reason, the installation of a 3ph PowerTag installed downstream to several 1Ph circuit breakers is forbidden because the physical separation of the 3 phases with the load is not insured when only the associated circuit breaker is switched off (risk of Power loop through the PowerTag itself (screenshot 1 extracted from the PowerTag catalog)
  • Regarding the gateway who gather data, all the measurements will not be relevant, (example: Average current which is the average of the 3 phase currents will not make sense if only one phase is wired.)
  • Regarding the upper SE on-premises softwares : Native drivers of (PME, PO) will not  propose relevant value for 3 phases  average measurements.
  • Regarding SE cloud application (EEH, FE…):  these kind of upper systems  will not be able to manage properly the PowerTag   so it is not possible  for this type of architecture.
  • Obviously only a customized development in the upper client (BMS, PLC, SCADA) to collect only the relevant measurement shall be advised
  • Regarding the power, it is possible to supply  only between 1 phase and neutral or between two phases for the two models. However for F63 A9MEM1570, the two not used phase voltage picking must be wired in a terminal block (even if not used)  for security reasons. In my opinion it makes sense to prefer to use one or several A9MEM1560 (1ph +N) instead A9MEM1570.

Hello @Stuart_Cheng ,

Important question: what is the voltage of your load ?

  1. 230 Vac ? In this case, why not using A9MEM1560 ? Load current higher than 63 amps ?
  2. 400 Vac ? In this case check my answer below.

By design you can power supply F63 and F160 between N+Ph1. But as mentioned by Thierry, F63 unused phases must be connected somewhere in your enclosure (PE) => but in this case, this could lead to earth leakage (DDR trip) in case of internal failure of the PowerTag sensor (risk is very low, but never 0 especially if the PowerTag is not correctly wire to the breaker - true story).

You can also power supply the Powertag F63, F160 by connecting beween L1-L2, L2-L3, L3-L1 if you have a 1ph 400 Vac load. Same remark as above for the F63 voltage and neutral probes that are not connected to the breaker.

If you are using Panel Server or PowerTag Link as a gateway, following measurement will be pertinent:

  • Voltage P-N or P-P (depending on your load)
  • Phase current (A, B or C).
  • Total Power
  • Total Energy

I complete the 2 previous posts concerning PowerTag voltage picking connection after discussion with R&D team.

  • It is not advised to leave the PowerTag voltage picking unconnected  or to connect to PE (as mentionned in the 2 previous posts). It is better to  fix a referential voltage by adding bridge between phase voltage picking even if the phase is not used for power measurement ( in attachment an example to count energy for a one phase load)

  • Whatever the wiring, you must also check that the real voltage is in the rated voltage range defined in the catalog. (Higher voltage will damage the PowerTag)

A9MEM1570:  Max Phase to Neutral voltage between 220 and 240VAC +/-20%  / Max Phase to Phase voltage between 380 and 415VAC +/-20%

A9MEM1580:  Max Phase to Neutral voltage between 100 and 277VAC +/-20%  / Max Phase to Phase voltage between 173 and 480 VAC +/-20%

Hi @Thierry_Baudard  and @Romain_Polette

Thank you so much for the input.

The reason I asked this question is because of the supply chain issue. The delivery time of A9MEM 1560 is longer than A9MEM 1570, which is why we are considering an alternative way. For sure A9MEM1560 (1ph +N) is a better option for 1 ph load.

Your information is really helpful. I will check with the customer about the remarks you have mentioned.
