Two SMX1500RM2U lights flashing, won't power up, relay RY403, RY404 and RY405 clicking.

Both units were born in 2015 and died within months of each other.  Maybe the second one was missing the first one.

Anyone have an idea of what the relays are for and why they died so early?

Thanks,

Jeff

P.S. They didn't exhibit any signs of being sick prior to there death.

Hi Jeff -

Try disconnecting the internal battery and see if the unit will turn on. If it does, then you just need new batteries. Failed batteries can sometimes cause a unit to get stuck in a loop like this, and being from 2015 they are certainly due for replacement.

Counting up the number of SMX1500RM2U in use and considering how many are within a year of having the same birthday of the problem UPS above, is probably going to cause some of my teeth additional wear in the near future.  Sigh.

My records show both units as having 09.1 (ID20).

I have updated some of the other UPS's to 10.1.  It's a PIB to update them (having to power them off) and it's a bit scary thinking about the possibility of bricking the unit.

Unless APC recommends you update the firmware, either to correct a well-known problem or a specific issue you're having, I'd let them be if they are out of warranty. You'd be amazed how many motherboards come back with "problems" that were simply due to a bad BIOS flash.
