Smart UPS 3000 won't start - rattling sound from beeper

One of my SmartUPS 3000 RM units suddenly stopped working and I can't get it started.
There's a rattling sound coming from the beeper. Plugged in or not plugged in does not make a difference. Holding the start/test button does not produce the long beep.
The sound stops when I disconnect the battery pack.
I tested the battery pack in another unit and it's just fine.
There is power on the defective unit and all breakers/overload buttons are "on" and working.

Time to buy a new unit?
