Hi,

The SURTD5000 is the replacement for the SURT5000. The SURTD has updated firmware and communicates with PowerChute using Microlink protocol. The SURT communicates with PowerChute using UPSlink protocol.

Can firmware be updated to make the two models essentially the same?  Can APCUPSD be used in both with same functionality?  Is there any substantial hardware differences?  Do all the NMC's operate the same in both models?

No.

APCUPSD will work with both. I don't have units to test so I cannot be sure but my assumption is the functionality will be the same however the SURT may display additional information in the interface since APCUPSD was developed for UPS-link UPS.
