SURT3000XLI FAULT

Hi There,

I have one UPS that sometimes, with low load and beeing connected to mains, does the following:
- stops inverter and goes to bypass
- lights up fault led
- lights up permanently battery leds number 2 and 4

Is there any soul who can translate this apparently fault code?

The fault code can be charger fault but the real fault I think is more sophisticated.

Based on your tip I investigated what happen to the battery voltage and discovered this:
- Without load and with mains voltage applied, batteries goes up normally to the floating voltage.
- Putting load on the output, maintaining applied mains voltage, batteries starts discharging and, after some time, the inverter stops, the load is transferred to bypass and signalisation is like it was described last post.

Why I said that this happens “sometimes”:
I said that because if I discharge the batteries a little, running a load from batteries, and after that make the experience above described it seems that the UPS's freeze doesn’t occur. Now I think that it is because I’m not starting from floating voltage and UPS have more difficult to decide. After investigate batteries voltage behaviour I can now guarantee that in this situation batteries discharge also.

I don't agree with you only because I can see that batteries are charged if I have no load at output.

Please note that the charger topologies of this unit (on line) is composed of 2 charger inside if one charger is faulty the other one will work normally and the fault will appear and clear many times.
as you can see the ups contain 2 rack of battery each rack is charged by a separate charger.
to be sure that both charger are working normally you have to measure the voltage on each rack separately.
if you can provide the voltage of racks during the diagnostic test or fault condition it will be helpful.
if you are using a network management card please send the data log and event log.
and are you sure that the batteries are in good condition?

This UPS doesn't have two chargers as you say.

Thanks Clarkson. You are right. We have to understand the signalisation not as a charger failure but as abnormal discharge of batteries.
Thinking like this, and knowing a little of this kind of things, it is easy to understand that the only way to get power from batteries instade of AC input occurs if the relay that switches the power circuit that charges the positive capacitor of the high voltage bus is welded.
Because this power circuit is the same - used as part of input PFC when geting power from mains and DC/DC converter when runnig from batteries - the control drives the power stage as a PFC but power comes from batteries.
It is clear that with no load the charger can supply the necessary power but a little load is enough to arrive the current limit of the charger and necessarly the batteries starts discharging.
This is not theory. This is the true because the UPS is now running without problems.

Its worth noting there is a known charger fault with the SURT3000 and 5000 which use the same main board, you will notice that the current model has been revised to SURT*D*3000.

I can only assume the 'D' stands for Doesnt have the faulty charger.
