I entered my model number (SU5000RMT5U) in APC battery selector and it says the replacement is RBC12. The RBC12s 1) do not look anything like the original batteries that are in the UPS, and 2) will not even fit in the battery slot. The existing batteries look exactly like the RBC11, but I am afraid to order them since they are not rated or the SU5000. The existing batteries' labels are not readable.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I've had both the SUA5000 and the SU5000 models. It's been several years, but from my pictures of the units, I believe the SUA model uses the RBC55 style batteries (similar to RBC11) and the SU model used the RCB12's. They are both 2-24 VDC connection battery systems with each system "glued" together. Unless APC has somehow altered the battery compartment of the more recent SU models, the RBC12 would seem to be correct.
