I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on a SRT5KXLT id: 1013 from firmware version 4.0 to 15.1.
When the UPS was first connected to my laptop, via USB A -> USB B, it worked but my laptop froze as soon as the file transfer started, and then after a few minutes the laptop restarted on its own.
Now when I try to run the FUW it immediately pops up with an error at the point of agreeing to the terms of service.
It says that the UPS cannot be updated via USB and to use the UPS serial port with the original cable that came with the UPS.
I don't have the original cable, is there anything I can do?

You’ll need the supplied (proprietary) APC Serial cable that came with the unit, purchase one, or make one.
You can NOT use a standard serial cable because it’s not wired correctly. Using a none APC Serial cable or one you’ve made that has not been validated to work will immediately shutdown the UPS! ☝️
You’ll want to review the APC FAQ as to how to upgrade the firmware on your unit and requirements must be met before doing so.
Paying special attention to the firmware matrix. Your laptop should be clean and configured properly before you attempt the firmware update!
At this point you have a 50/50 chance of recovery vs a bricked unit. If you have more questions please do ask. 👍
NOTE: Firmware upgrades should be guided by a live APC Technical Support staff over the phone. Firmware upgrades should only be done to address bugs, security, feature enhancements.
Firmware on the main UPS should NEVER be done out of warranty.
The odds of an update failure is greater than 50% especially for older hardware. A failed update can leave the unit in a bricked state . . . ☝️
I have also left you a reference link:

Thank you for your helpful reply,
Specifically that the reason we need to upgrade is because the UPS has a bug so that it doesn't register that the batteries have been changed, and continually shows error that we need to change the batteries even though they were just installed.
We are certain the configuring and installing the UPS with the batteries was done correctly as we completed the process while on the phone with APC Technical Support staff. He was the one who had advised us to upgrade the firmware.
Is it possible to update this model of UPS [SRT5KXLT id: 1013] remotely via the Embedded NMC? Do you have any tips for upgrading this way?
Thank you again,

Hi,
The linked thread I provided in my initial reply includes all the URL Resources from APC that you’ll need to read and follow. I have also included some of the best practices (Do’s / Dont’s) for a positive outcome.
As it relates to updating the UPS via the NMC it can be done but is NOT recommended because the failure rate is more than 75%! ☹️
Given the unit is currently bricked or in a unknown state. Please refer to my comments using the USB & Serial connection to unbrick the main unit.

You mentioned making my own cable, is there a wiring diagram/resources somewhere that can help me with that? I'm having trouble finding places to buy the cable as well. Also, the UPS seems to be fine, and functioning as well as it was before.
Thank you so much for your help!

I checked there, it seems our specific model is not listed. Can you point me directly to the right one to use? I don't want to risk bricking the UPS by using the wrong cable.
thanks again for all your help!!
