I am using Debian 9 and am having trouble getting my computer to recognize the ups. The cable I've bought is the AP9827 940-0127B. I simply wish to have my Linux computer read from the UPS when the power has been out for a few minutes so it can gracefully shutdown. Please let me know if I maybe need a different cable, the back of my unit has a "USB Port" and a "USB Monitoring Port"; my cable plugs into the second port which looks like an RJ45 and then USB into my computer.
Looking at online guides they suggested checking for it through "lsusb" though that does not show the ups.
Below I have provided the details on my ups, I also have the serial number if that is needed.
UPS Part No: SMT1500
UPS Manufacture Date: Jan-2012
UPS Firmware 1: UPS 05.0
UPS Firmware 2: COM 02.1
UPS Firmware 3: UBL 05.0
The back of my unit is identical to this image, https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/AZIAAOSwpINaIEdA/s-l1600.jpg, in case that helps clear up my cable options.
On a second note, I'm also interested in how I can update the firmware of this unit.

Thank you very much for the response! I happened to have a spare USB a to b cable and "lsusb" was able to see "American Power Conversion UPS" as one of the USB cables!
I'm curious what cable is necessary to update the firmware then. The Firmware Update Wizard (FUW) and this website, http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/content/?id=FA281865, both say a serial cable is needed, but I don't see any kind of serial cable port on the back of my unit.

Hi,
You should use the USB port with a standard USB cable not the RJ45 port.
