Is possible to restart the NMC AP9619 on Smart-UPS RT 5000 XL without affect UPS ??

Hi:

Last night my APC network management card AP9619 began to send messages indicating error code: 0x0102 "Critical - UPS: Lost the local network management interface-to-UPS communication". After a few hours reading comments on this forum, I believe that I need to make a firmware upgrade to the NMC to 3.7.2. However, This UPS is the core unity of my infraestructure, so I need to create a window time frame to shutdown all the servers connected to it,  and make the firmware upgrade.

My question is: can I do a Restart Management at any moment to recover communication with the UPS without affecting the UPS power outlets  to gain control over my UPS again on this days, and wait for the weekend to create the window time frame and apply the fix  ??

  I read it´s posible on a Smart-UPS RT6000 but I´n not sure about the Smart-UPS RT5000 and with AP6919 model.

I really apreciate your comments !!!!!

  Best Regards,

Horacio Diaz-Requejo

Hi Horacio,

Yes, you can do this safely. Upgrading the firmware on the UPS Network Management Cards (AP9617/18/19/30/31/35) that we offer do not reboot the UPS when you upgrade their firmware.

You may want to just try a reboot before you go ahead and upgrade the firmware anyway..

The "communication lost" can be caused by one of 3 things: 1) the NMC (safe to reboot while UPS has load); 2) the microcontroller board on the UPS (generally requires a complete power cycle on the UPS, so shut down the load devices first); 3) something else on the same communication bus (serial console, extended runtime packs (on some UPS models) or other expansion cards (in some UPS models).

So, if rebooting the NMC doesn't clear the problem, I'd do a remove/insert on the NMC as my next step. After that, you'd need to power cycle the UPS (and "dead" it - see APC knowlege base) if the problem persists.

If you have one of the UPS models with a fancy front panel (I'm not too familiar with recent products) there may be useful information available on the LCD display if the problem is on the UPS side.
