Firmware for Smart-UPS 2200 RM?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/18/2016

Hi,
I've searched the support site for firmware for our Smart-UPS 2200 RM, but I can't find it.
This is the info I have:
Model: Smart-UPS 2200 RM
Serial Number: ********* (intentionally masked out, but can be provided if needed)
Firmware Revision: 665.6.I
Manufacture Date: 02/05/07
I have updated the firmware of the UPS Network Management Card 2 (AP9630) to AOS v6.4.0.
Now I'd like to find a firmware update for the UPS.
Could anyone please point me to the correct firmware files?
/Kenny

If the UPS has been in storage for more than a month or two with the batteries connected and without being brain-deaded, you will likely need a new battery pack for that UPS as well. It is also a good idea to charge batteries in storage at least once every 6 months, regardless of whether they are in a UPS or not. If they're in a UPS, this can be as simple as turning the UPS on and waiting until you have all of the batter charge LEDs lit (or equivalent display on a LCD unit).

Hi,

Where did you get that f/w revision level 665.61 from?  I'd use the NMC2 and in the "About/UPS" tab I would check the f/w revision level of the UPS there.  Is there a revision level with an "IDxx" in it?  The ID gives you an indication of which firmware file is needed by your specific UPS.

After that, you can download all the firmware images from:

https://schneider-electric.app.box.com/s/fqefnt49zyomtd227e3yhq5leof17rvx

There you will find a zip file in which you should be able to find a *.enc file with the same ID number as your UPS' firmware.  Using the firmware update function on the NMC, you can then upload the file to the UPS and upgrade that way.  Please note that the UPS outlets must be off prior to updating the firmware so if you have your UPS connected to the network via a switch or something powered by the UPS, the switch must be moved to a source of stable power while the UPS outlets are off.

You can also download the firmware upgrade wizard and upgrade via USB if you have that option:

https://schneider-electric.app.box.com/s/fg9pvls6l9l213mz8guw2qh6976rxbn7

A word of caution!!!  I destroyed a two-year old SMT3000 by messing up the firmware upgrade for whatever reason.  PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.  The costly lesson I learned, once again, is "if it isn't broken, don't fix it".

Good luck!

Thanks Joe, but here is no such info ("IDxx") when I access About->UPS.

Btw, The UPS seem to have been bought in 2007(?).  Originally there was no mgmt card installed. This card was installed in 2015.

The UPS is labelled DLA2200RMI2U.   Could it be that the UPS is not possible to update without the help of a technician?

Hi Kenny.  I am not sure about needing help from a technical expert or not.  The DL indicates that it is a rebranded APC unit sold by Dell.  It's probably an SUA2200RMI2U but cannot be sure.

I'd contact Dell and then, possibly, APC for help.  Is the unit working properly right now on the existing firmware?  I'd hate to have you turn it into a boat anchor accidentally as I did to my $1200 unit.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks Joe,

A few weeks ago the UPS seemed to fail, causing a reboot of all connected hardware, possibly when executing a scheduled self test.

Afterward there were a lot of log entries similar to these:

01/14/2016 19:38:01 Device UPS: The battery is now installed.
01/14/2016 19:37:39 Device UPS: The battery is not installed properly.
01/14/2016 17:26:11 Device UPS: The battery is now installed.
01/14/2016 17:25:51 Device UPS: The battery is not installed properly.
01/14/2016 16:53:47 Device UPS: The battery is now installed.
01/14/2016 16:53:27 Device UPS: The battery is not installed properly.
01/14/2016 16:43:52 Device UPS: The battery is now installed.
01/14/2016 16:43:32 Device UPS: The battery is not installed properly.

It could be the battery is too old, but my plan was/is to update both the UPS and the Mgmt card to latest firmware version first, to make sure the problem isn't a faulty firmware.

Kenny,

That's an interesting set of alerts regarding the battery installation.  Any chance of checking the connectors/wiring to make sure they are not intermittent or otherwise loose?  Maybe clean them with compressed air or somthing.  If your load is not critical, you may want to run a "run time calibration" test from the NMC2 just to confirm that the batteries are not giving up the ghost.  If you've done that and the run time is ok, then the batts are probably sufficient.

I understand the desire to have all the f/w up to date as well.

I don't believe the UPS firmware is upgradable on those units. I have a SU3000RM here from 2004 with firmware 666.6.D. In your serial number, the 3rd and 4th characters are the year of manufacture.

Until you get up into fancier models of UPS, the only indication the UPS has of battery condition is what it can guess from the 2 battery wires and (sometimes) a thermal sensor. I've seen the exact same repeating errors when batteries were failing.

I'd suggest measuring the battery voltage (if you have a voltmeter and are comfortable doing it). I believe your unit has 2 parallel strings of 4 batteries, so you will have a nominal 48V (more like 54 or so when connected to the UPS and floating).

Many UPS hiccups can be fixed by "brain deading" the UPS. Shut doen any connected loads, turn the UPS off from the front panel and unplug it from the wall (this part is important). Now press and hold the Off button on the front -panel until you hear a relay click inside the UPS. It may also chirp ones. At this point the Sensitivity LED on the back should have turned off. You can now plug the UPS back in, turn it on, and then turn on your connected devices if all seems well.

Thanks Terry.

We will probably replace the UPS. We have a UPS of a similar model, but newer, on the shelf in another office.
