Connection to serial port via USB-serial adapter

Hi,
I regularly use a laptop to configure several APC smart-UPS via command line and putty. Up until a week ago the laptop was windows 7 starter edition. I have since wiped this and put Windows 7 Enterprise and reinstalled all the drivers and necessary software. However since this reinstall I am unable to connect to any APC UPS.

I've tried various drivers for the USB-serial adapter. It is a Belkin F5U103V. The odd thing is that I can connect to Cisco switches using the same adapter so there isn't a problem with the driver as far as I can tell.

The serial settings I am using are 38400, 8, 0, 1, XON XOFF.

I'm just getting no response in the putty window after initialising connection. Have tried pressing enter several times to jog it along.

I realise that this isn't an APC issue as such, but I wondered whether anyone else had found a solution to this. Failing that I'm going to have to reinstall windows 7 starter edition and try again with that.

Cheers in advance.

Hi..
If you wish to communicate with APC smart UPS thru serial, the settings on your hyperternimal are:-
Baud rate = 2400 , Stop bit = 1, Data bit = 8, Flow control = None and parity = None.
If the UPS 's port is RJ45 type, baud rate = 9600.

Thanks and regards

what UPS are you trying to connect to? only APC netbotz devices connect at 38400. most UPSs use either 9600 or 2400 baud rate, depending on the model and use None for flow control.

if you tell me the exact model of the UPS, i can give you the definite port speed/settings.

It's a SmartUPS 3000 (black 2U model). I've tried dropping the baud rate down to 9600 as a test. Admittedly I didn't change the flow control though.

Hi,
yes it has a AP9617 NIC in the smart slot. That is why I'm trying to connect in the first place as I need to reconfigure it.

I'm using a 940-1524D serial cable, and have now tried baud rate 2400, data bits 8, Stop bits 1, Parity None, Flow Control None.

I just get a blank terminal window.

I've also tried a different cable with the same results.

Having the incorrect baud rate and flow control had stopped me connecting to the other UPSs.

Hi Katongo,

If you want to access the console view of the embedded network interface, you can only use the TRS to DB9 cable (PN: 940-0299). Looks like the picture below. There is a TRS console port beside the Ethernet port that you can connect to.

Setting are 9600, 8, 1, None, None on a terminal program. Default username and password is "apc".

The USB and Serial port on the UPS is applicable only if you will use PowerChute Business Edition.

As for the error, I recommend for you to contact local support.

Hi,

There is no need to connect the cable. The 0200 error indicates an Oscillator event. To correct you should brain dead the UPS. See Schneider Electric FAQ FA156611 for assistance with "How to perform a cold start and brain dead of Smart-UPS"

If the issue returns after the brain dead procedure they UPS should be replaced.

Please, Do you have the diagram of conection for this cable. (The serial com is rj45 and I have the cable serial to USB working). Thank you.
