Critical UPS Events

A Critical event is an event that requires immediate attention. These events are displayed in the Event Log page of the Web Portal.   Battery Disconnected Battery: High Temperature Battery: Temperature Threshold Exceeded Communications Lost Replace Battery UPS Fault (Error Code) UPS Initiated Bypass UPS Low Battery UPS Overload Critical UPS Events Event Description Action Battery Disconnected The Web Portal has detected that the UPS battery has been disconnected from the UPS, and the UPS cannot support its load. Refer to the UPS Installation Guide for instructions on reconnecting the battery. Battery: High Temperature The Web Portal has detected that the UPS battery temperature is too high. This temperature event can be caused by a high temperature at the UPS installation site, or as an early notification of an impending battery issue. Battery lifespan is impacted by the operating temperature of the battery. The optimum operating temperature for a lead-acid battery is 25º Celsius/ 77º Fahrenheit. Take immediate steps to reduce the internal temperature of the UPS: • Ensure sure that the UPS is installed in a cool, dry location. Check that the ambient temperature of the UPS installation site does not exceed 24º Celsius/ 75º Fahrenheit. • Ensure that the UPS vents are not blocked, and allow a minimum of 2 inches of space around the UPS for ventilation. • Disconnect all devices from the UPS, turn off the UPS, and cool the battery to less than 45º Celsius/ 113º Fahrenheit to clear the event.  • Turn on the UPS and run a self test. If the self test does not pass, a replacement battery may be required. Continued operation under this condition may result in a more critical condition. If the event persists, contact APC Customer Support for further guidance. Battery: Temperature Threshold Exceeded Immediate attention is required. The UPS internal battery temperature is too high and the battery may be damaged due to excess heat. NOTE: The UPS load is not supported during this Battery Temperature event. In the event of a power outage, connected devices will not be supported by the UPS battery, and will not be shut down gracefully. Follow the instructions in the UPS Installation Guide to immediately inspect the UPS battery. • If the UPS battery is not swollen, or hot to the touch: a .Promptly disconnect the battery from the UPS. b. Contact APC Customer Support  to obtain a replacement battery. • If the UPS battery has swollen due to excess heat and cannot be disconnected or removed from the UPS: a. Gracefully shut down and disconnect devices connected to the UPS. b. Turn off the UPS and disconnect input power to the UPS. Communications Lost There have been no network communications between the Web Portal and the UPS for more than 17 minutes. • Check that the network cable is connected to the SmartConnect Ethernet port of the UPS. • Check that the network cable is connected to a network switch, and make sure that the network switch has an active internet connection. • Ensure that SmartConnect access is enabled on your UPS. This can be manually enabled via the UPS device’s LCD screen. For more information, consult your UPS manual.  Replace Battery An internal UPS battery self test has detected that the battery can no longer support its load, and needs to be replaced. Visit www.apc.com or your reseller partner to buy a replacement battery. UPS Fault (Error Code) The UPS is reporting a hardware error. An associated Error Code is displayed to specify the type of hardware error. Contact APC Customer Support, and specify the error code displayed in the Web Portal for further assistance. UPS Initiated Bypass The UPS is reporting an internal hardware issue that has caused the UPS to switch to bypass operation. The action required depends on the type of hardware issue that causes the bypass. The event causing the bypass condition is also logged to the event log, e.g. UPS Fault (Error Code. Refer to the Operation Manual of your UPS for more information on possible causes or contact APC Customer Support  for further assistance and ensure to reference the UPS Error Code or UPS event that occurred at the time the UPS initiated the bypass condition. NOTE: While in bypass, the battery is not supporting the load. If a power outage occurs, the devices connected to the UPS are not protected by the UPS battery. UPS Low Battery The UPS operating on battery power has reached the Low Battery threshold, which is configurable via the UPS LCD, and via PowerChute Serial Shutdown. When the runtime remaining of a UPS on battery reaches this threshold, a low battery condition is triggered, and if input power is not supplied to the UPS, the UPS will shut down when the battery is exhausted. A low battery warning will also trigger a shutdown of any devices connected to the UPS that are managed by PowerChute Serial Shutdown or Network Shutdown. If devices connected to the UPS are not managed by PowerChute, gracefully shut them down immediately. Restore utility power to the UPS when the power outage is resolved. UPS Overload The UPS cannot supply enough power to support the number or capacity of devices connected to the UPS. If the overload event has occurred following the addition of a new device connected to the UPS, the UPS cannot support the new load. Connect the new device to another UPS, or visit www.apc.com or your reseller partner to buy a UPS model that can support the increased load. If the overload was not caused by connecting new loads to the UPS: • Run a UPS self test to see if the event clears. • If the self test is passed and the overload still exists, gracefully shut down the devices connected to the UPS, and restart the UPS. • If the problem persists, disconnect all equipment from the UPS, restart the UPS and run a self test. •If the overload persists, contact APC Customer Support. If the overload has cleared, reconnect and turn on devices one at a time to determine which device caused the overload condition.
