Problems with PM8000 using as a Modbus Master Gateway for Serial devices in PME

Customer wants to use 3x PM8000 device as a master gateway for different slave meters.

The problem is we cant get a connection to the modbus slaves.

Also the devices are not seen in the ION-Setup and also the PM8000 itself could not be configured in ion Setup.

I set a site with the IP of the PM8000 and set a device with the Slave ID100 which should be the device itself.

As you can see - unable to upload device feature information

After flashing the newest firmware we could not see the ip configuration in the webapplication anymore but the device is reachable with the correct IP.

Re: Problems with PM8000 using as a Modbus Master Gateway for Serial devices in PME

In most instances where you are communicating to a PM8000 via direct Ethernet (plugged directly via RJ-45), you will want to use IP port 7700, not 502 to communicate to the device (this uses ION protocol instead of Modbus TCP).  Firmware version 1.4.0 for the PM8000 while it does allow ION to operate over Modbus, this should only be used when the PM8K is being a device replacement in a serial RS-485 installation along with other Modbus devices (and adding a 2nd ION only RS-485 line isn't an option).

In this instance, you would want to add two sites in ION Setup, one for the PM8K itself (as a direct Ethernet device), and a Modbus gateway for any slaves devices attached to the PM8K Com1 RS-485 port.

So the above "ION Device 1" would be the PM8K directly, while the "ION Gateway Device 2" would be a slave device downstream.

Also to enable the PM8K to allow for Modbus Gateway to operate properly, you have to use ION Setup (or ION Designer) to configure this feature as it can't be properly turned on via the front panel or web interfaces right now.

If you have a more recent version of ION Setup, when you enable "Modbus Master" on the Com1 Port for the PM8K, ION Setup will now prompt if you want to turn on the gateway as well.

You can also control the Modbus Gateway via the default Setup Assistant under Communications -> Basic Ethernet -> TCP/IP.

It will give you the option to pick any port but will only indicate its operational if the protocol is Modbus Master.
