PM8000 Series - IEC 61850

Good day, All.

1. In order to use IEC 61850 on PM8240, do I need additional setting?

2. I don't know that file's name mean. Which is PM8240's .icd file?

Do you have a guidebook for choice?

Hi Yeo

The *.icd file names are based on the number and type of option modules attached to your PM8000 series meter. Looking at the list, for a standalone meter the file would be

SE_PM8000-Onb1-F01_E1V01.icd.

To use the IEC 61850 functions of the PM8000 series meter, you need to configure the *.icd file to create a *.cid file. That *.cid file needs to be loaded onto the meter to enable IEC 61850 functions.

You can use ION Setup to load the *.cid file onto your meter, confirm it has loaded correctly, and customize additional data to be available via IEC 61850. You can also load the *.cid file using ftp, and refer to the log.txt file to confirm that the file has loaded correctly. I recommend using ION Setup because it is easier and more friendly to use.

For instructions on loading *.cid files and configuring additional data, refer to the IEC 61850 section of the PM8000 user guide (search PM8000 series user manual on www.schneider-electric.com). For more information about how IEC 61850 is implemented on ION meters, refer to the IEC 61850 and ION technology protocol document (search iec 61850 and ion technology on www.schneider-electric.com)

You can download the latest version of ION Setup for free from this Box location:

The zip file with the icd contains many files.  There is no "READ ME" file with the download.  How de we find an explanation on what icd file is correct for us to load onto the meter?

Seeing the same thing as you.  How do we know what icd to use...?  Working on this myself.  Looks to work cleanly with an ION 7650...

Hi Michael

Yes, there is a gap here. We are in the process of updating the IEC 61850 protocol doc with this information.

The EXP1 corresponds to the Digital option module METSEPM89M2600, and EXP2 corresponds to the Analog option module METSEPM89M0024.

So, a icd filename like SE_PM8000-Onb1-Exp2-Exp1-Exp2-Exp1-FO1_E1V01 would be the icd file you would select if you had a PM8000 meter with a analog option module in slot a (closest to the meter), a digital option module in slot b, an analog module in slot c, and a digital module in slot d (furthest from the meter).

If you have just a PM8000 with the onboard I/O, you would use SE_PM8000-Onb1-F01-E1V01

Hope that helps.

Alana:

Thank you for your quick reply.  We are trying to land a large project that includes IEC61850 devices.  We promote Schneider and PowerLogic as our first choice in any job. Including a README file in the zip with that kind of data would be wonderful for existing and future releases of the IEC61850 files for all of the devices.  That would assist users in understanding and picking the correct file.

Sincerely,

Michael Franz

The PM8000 that I am attempting to upload the icd file is at firmware 001.002.014.  This appears to be the latest.  In Designer I see there is a IEC61850 program "folder."  I opened CET850 to upload the file to the meter.  It made me save the icd file before it would allow me to change things like the IP, mask, gateway numbers.  I made these match those of the meter.  CET850 would not allow me to "send" the icd to the meter.  That option was grayed out.  Our goal is to tie an ION 7650 to the PM8000 so we can test our IEC61850 skills by closing an input on one device to effect an output on another.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael

I would strongly recommend using ION Setup to load your configured CID file to the PM8xxx's internal FTP site.

The process is documented on page 69 of the latest version of the PM8xxx user guide, see screencap.ion_s_iec61850.png

You can download a copy of the user manual here:

Alana:

The download for IEC 61850 are icd and not CID files.  Have searched and cannot find CID files for the PM8000 meter.  This appears to be why CET850 is not able to send the files either.  Searches for IEC 61850 and PM8000 pinpoint a file with a bunch of icd files.

Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Michael Franz

If you look at  Yeo-Pyoung Yoon   note above you will see the reference to the icd files.

Hi Michael

The ICD file is a generic IEC 61850 file that describes a generic device, and this is the file provided by Schneider.

The CID file is a configured ICD file (yes, they define an acronym with an acronym) which you create in CET850 by configuring the appropriate ICD file (based on your physical device's configuration) with the specifics of your device (IP address). This configured, CID file is what you load onto your meter's ftp site to get IEC61850 functions working on your meter.

This is explained with a bit more detail in the IEC 61850 and ION Technology protocol document, located here:

http://www.schneider-electric.com/ww/en/download/document/70022-0125?showAsIframe=true

It is a bit complicated, for sure.

Cheers,

Alana

Thanks for your assistance.  CET850 HELP is not very helpful and the manual is convoluted.

Alana:

Tried the notepad thing, changed ip, mask, gateway numbers and saved as cid.  ION Setup recognizes the cid extention but fail during sending like the icd turned cid is not right for the job.  ION Setup keeps coming back asking for the cid file after it tries sending it to the meter.

Wondering if there is a utility that compiles icd files into cid format?

Thanks,

Michael Franz

Hi Michael

That is what CET 850 is supposed to do, I was just experimenting with a workaround as I'm not very familiar with that tool. Sorry about that. I'm thinking maybe you should call in the professionals (tech support) and maybe they can walk you through the process of using CET850.

You might also check what the log.txt file on your meter's FTP site has in it, as it logs the error messages when trying to load a CID file. There might be some helpful messages there.

cheers,

Alana

Alana:

Have a call into PowerLogic technical support.  They are unsure of how to proceed and are looking into this.  There is no compile method that I have noted in CET850.  I can open the icd file, save it, modify it, change the IP, Mask, Gateway numbers but have not found how to make it into a cid that is needed to add 61850 to the meter.

Is there someone you can suggest to reach out to for help with this topic?

Hey Michael

I think I remembered the weird (to me at least) thing you had to do for CET850 - you actually create a new, blank scl file and then add the IED. I created a cid file this way and successfully loaded it onto my local PM8000.

Here's the steps:

1. open CET850. Specify IEC 61850 edition 1 (unless you know you have files and fw supporting edition 2)

2) create a NEW scl in CET850

3) go to Add and select Add IED

A screen should appear. There is a field where you can browse/select an icd file. Select Other device and navigate to where you've stored your icd file.Click OK

Enter in the ip address etc of your device.

5) Go to File, build all CID files. Make a new folder on your desktop and point to it. You will be prompted to save the scl file (though you don't need it) and give it a name. This will actually create both the scl file and the cid file. It will prompt about the CID file, just click "open" and that seems to make it.

good luck

Alana

Alana:

We need to document those steps or show where they are in the manual.  I also has issues with sending via ftp due to Windows Firewall blocking ports 20 and 21.  Disconnect the pc from the world, disable firewall and then was able to ftp files.  Next step is interoperability between the PM8000 and an ION7650.  That was in the plan from the start.

Thanks for your assistance.

Michael
