Have you ever wondered how many logs your ION meter can store?

With the need to record more data than ever, it can be a challenge to balance the number of logs stored on a device against a fixed memory space and how frequently data is being recorded.   However, with the use of ION technology we have been able to minimize the memory footprint each data log requires to allow for more data to be stored.

With ION meters allowing up to 50 data recorder modules, with 16 inputs each, calculating the amount of space required for logs becomes a necessity to maximize the information needed.  This can also be used to understand how much data is being consumed when communicating over cell modem. This will provide a rough estimate on the amount data that would be required when accessing the meter allowing you to pick the right data plan for your device.

Below outlines how much memory is required to store a single log of data:

Datarecorder Formula.png

Using this formula, the amount of memory used by a single data recorder can be calculated under certain conditions. See below for example:

# Channels

Log interval (mins)

Days of Data storage

Depth

kB Used

16

15

120

11520

990

Similarly, Waveform Recorders use the same memory pool as the Data Recorders. You can also calculate the amount of memory required for your Waveform Recorders:

*Sample Rate & Cycles Per Capture* - This is as configured in the Waveform Recorder as seen in the screenshot below:

Filling in the formula above using the setup from the screenshot above, you can calculate the total capacity to be:

Depth Setting

Sample Rate

Cycles per Capture

kB Used

30

1024

2

122

Attached to this post is a basic Excel template that can be used to determine how much memory your current configuration is using.  All cells highlighted in grey can be modified to help calculate your memory usage.  Make the most of your data!
