A client is requesting a metering system for many production lines (~70) and they want the metering system to include the calculaton of equivalent Co2 tons. They're looking for a system as cheap as possible, so PME is not in the scope of the project. Is there a way to calculate these values directly in a power meter (PM51XX) and report them back to the client?

Hi Pablo,
The PM5XXX series lacks the ION Logic to allow for CO2 calculations in the meter, but a PM8000 can achieve this no problem with an arithmetic module!
ION Setup is your best bet for programming the calculation on-site, unless you have your own PME system to create a framework in Designer and then load the DCF onto the meter on-site via ION Setup.
The PM8000 has several means of getting the data out; Modbus RTU/TCP, Analog/Digital Output, Email.
Modbus or Analog/Digital Out to their DCS or other software would likely be easiest to coordinate with E&I techs, but could require physical wiring beyond just Ethernet comms.
If their IT is both savvy and willing to help then SMTP email shouldn't be hard to set up either through the Alert Module.
All-in-all it's pretty easy to get the calculation done, and a couple ways of getting the data out, just depends on the customers preferred format.

While the PM8000 has up to 64 modbus device modules, I do not think you can have all ~60 device on a single Rs-485 loop. I guess your next question would be how many can I have on a loop and I do not know for sure, there are things like burden of each RS-485 interface on PM5000 or iEM to consider.
I have never tried loading a meter this high so I cannot say what the performance would be like. Could also look at have multiple gateways connected to a group and meters and have the (or multiple) PM8k modbus master via the gateway.

Hello @Scott_MCN thanks for your response.
Since there are many devices to be metered (~60 circuits) I'm thinking about using a PM5100 or even iEM3255 for each circuit.
If I use a PM8000 as a "main" meter and all of the PM5100 are connected via RS485 (daisy chain) to the PM8000, can their inputs be used on the meter's designer frame? I've done this many times on PME, but never directly on the meter.

Hi @p_dejarmy_encos,
Feeding inputs into a PM8000 Modbus Master is a viable solution.
Perhaps look at the EM4800/EM4000 multi-circuit meter – each meter can take in 24 current inputs, and 3 voltage inputs (8 total 3Φ loads), perfect for panel monitoring, and lowering costs.
This would also reduce the number of Modbus Master modules needed on the PM8000 by a factor of 8. I would heavily suggest using Modbus TCP on Ethernet as well, to avoid using serial.
