I want to convert a customer's Allen Bradley PLC points to Ethernet/IP and eliminate the OPC server that is using Ethernet/IP, however they have quite a few PLCs that have DF1 addresses like N16:11/16 and Geo SCADA's driver doe not support those.
In the OPC server's driver that DF1 identifier ends up being 'usable' via CIP because CIP allows for tunneling of other data, so DF1 can be encapsulated within a CIP message. It's called PCCC. Thanks @BevanWeiss for explaining this to me.
So it would be great if PCCC support was added to the Ethernet/IP driver so more Allen Bradley PLCs can be communicated to directly.
Is there not already a DF1 driver in Geo SCADA? I haven't tried it for this but it should be able to talk to Ethernet enabled PLC's like the SLC 5/05 or Micrologix 1400 that have Ethernet. I know it works for Ethernet to Serial style connections.
@du5tinAll the PLCs i am accessing are configured to use Ethernet/IP and Citect is their primary SCADA. I am just making another connection, bringing in some bits here and there for use at the main offices. Most of them I am just bring the generator fuel levels all to one place to make scheduling refuels easier.
Since the DF1 driver is Serial only (it only supports connecting to a com port) there would need to be some software and/or hardware to convert it to Ethernet. I wanted to switch to the Ethernet/IP driver to eliminate one more thing to configure and maintain, the OPC server.
@MikeForshockJust FYI for possible future connections, the MicroLogix 1400 supports DNP3. From what I understand there is a bit of a learning curve to configuring it, but it works well once you have done it.
The Micro870 is their newer PLC that supports DNP3, programing it is completely different. Our PLC programmers haven't gotten to setting up a Micro870 with DNP3 yet, but it is in the works.
