PCBE and DCE

Im already using DCE in my datacenter.  I'm wondering if I can leverage PCBE via DCE to monitor some 1500 UPS devices that do not have NMCs installed.  Any input on that would be appreciated.  I saw somewhere Someone may have been doing this but have to create their own DDFs for thresholds.

Hi David,

Yes, PowerChute Business Edition on a Windows system can be monitored by DCE provided the operating system's SNMP service is configured and running prior to the PCBE install. You will get basic data but no alerts by default. You will need to manually configure thresholds in DCE for each agent. That is not the same as creating DDFs.

That is correct Spezialist. You can create a manual threshold for any sensor. You do NOT need another DDF.

Any version of PowerChute Business Edition for Windows has supported SNMP and before that, PowerChute Plus. As for the version of DCE, I believe the PCBE DDF was added in 7.0 but it could have been a little sooner or later.  Please note that this is different than PowerChute Network Shutdown which does not monitor the UPS. If you are using PCNS, the UPS has an NMC installed and you would monitor that NMC IP to monitor the UPS.

But I doubt, that there is a PCBE DDF-file on the current DCE-7.x server. I do not find it there: there is only a PCNS DDF-file. And in DEVICE SUPPORT, I also find only PCNS...

Unfortunately, what you want is almost impossible, since the basic communication protocol for the DCE-server is the SNMP protocol. And, if the PCBE software had a built-in snmp server (as in PCNS-4.2), theoretically, one could write a DDF-file for monitoring PCBE software installed on a PC. But I'm not sure that this way it would be possible to monitor the sensors of the UPS connected to this PC (via COM or USB port). I crossed out this, because according to the message Steven Marchetti it's still possible, although only a PC with Windows OS. Look also my similar topic

In addition, starting with the version of DCE-7.4.3.26, the updated DDF-file pcns.xml v3 is supplied. This updated DDF-file now allows you to see these "sensors" of the server with installed PCNS software (previously only Link Status was displayed):
