Email configuration Netbotz

Hello everybody.

I am configuring some Netbotz appliances like 570 for example and sometimes when i put the informations about email server , i try to do the "send test email" but it shows like : unable to send test email. I did the whole steps that the Netbotz guide suggests  I reached good results but  last time, i put all the informations and the same message appears. All informations were correct but it didn´t work. Probably the Netbotz is not accessing the mail server , or there´s some SSL problem , i don´t know.

Does anybody knows if there are ways to prove  that the Netbotz is sending the emails but the problem it´s on  mail server ?

Thanks .

Hi Luis,

Just an added comment to Nathans's answer. Make sure you have added the FQDN for the hostname in the "Network Interfaces" app under Advanced View. I have seen problems sending mail due to this.

Regards,

Breda

Hi Luis,

Here are a few suggestions for troubleshooting:

  • Check the SMTP server/relay logs to see if it is denying the NetBotz SMTP client for some reason (failed/unsupported authentication attempt like anonymous, unauthorized IP as some mail servers only accept new connections from certain hosts or networks).
    • If the SMTP relay server is running in Microsoft IIS, the log file is beneath the C:\inetpub directory by default.
    • If MS Exchange, you may need to enable the proper diagnostic category before it will appear in Event Viewer. Also, you will need to review the Client Access settings to look for any restrictions by IP/network, SSL/TLS requirements, and supported authentication methods.
  • Run Wireshark/Tshark/tcpdump on the SMTP server to confirm that the connection is being established and not failing due to excessive IP checksum failures or other causes. If you see TCP RSTs from the mail server then it or a firewall (hardware or software) is terminating the connection. A packet capture will also allow you to see the SMTP responses from the server if a connection is successfully established.
  • Investigate to see if any related log files on the NetBotz appliance are accessible. As I recall, there is a log viewer available in the NetBotz web interface if you're on a relatively modern firmware version. I can work to confirm this once I'm in the office tomorrow.
