Geo SCADA 2023 DB server could not see USB license

This was a new one for me and my support person also but she did get the answer from somewhere after a bit.

The problem was that the Database server could not see the licensing from the USB dongle.

The dongle field exchange utility and the Configure connections app could see the USB Dongle so the sentinel driver was installed and working correctly.

The solution was this registry setting needed to equal 0.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Schneider Electric\ClearSCADA\DB\LicenceSource

It was set equal to 1 and changing it equal to 0 resolved the problem.

I don't know what would be the cause of this, but this is what was done before finding this problem.

I was set up new replacement servers using Windows Server 2022 I had installed Geo SCADA 2022 September or December 2023 update version but before I shipped to the customer Geo SCADA 2023 was released, so I updated to that. I ran the servers without a license so I could set all the server configuration items and then shipped them to the customer. They put the USB license on one and updated it successfully, that is when we discovered that neither new server could see the license information.

My development system used to use a license file and now uses a USB and did not encounter this problem. I think it started on 2017 ClearSCADA version with multiple upgrades, including 2022 versions, before getting to Geo SCADA 2023.

Oh well it is what it is and it is resolved for my customer.

Hopefully no one else encounter this, but if the do this post is here.

After upgrading a server to Geo SCADA 2023 the "DB\LicenceSource" registry setting will be initialised the first time the server is started. If a valid dongle is attached then it will be set to zero (dongle) otherwise it will be set to one (file).

The "DB\LicenceSource" setting can have the following values:

  • 0 - Dongle
  • 1 - Licence File
  • 2 - AVEVA Enterprise Licensing (AEL)

You can view and change the licence source from the "License Details" dialog box in the server icon:

I did not notice that there was a drop down box there now.

I wonder why the support person did not just tell me to check that instead of the registry.

That's better than making a registry edit and make more sense.
