Supported Gateway versions

Device configuration in IT Expert is not available unless all the Gateways in your organization are updated to version 2.0 or newer including Gateways that are offline.

If all the Gateways in your organization run software version 1.24 and older, Device configuration is available without the newest features.

If the Gateways in your organization run a mix of software versions 2.0 and newer and 1.24 and older, Device configuration is not available.

All the Gateways in your organization must be updated version to 2.0 or newer to enable access.

New Device configuration features supported by Gateway 2.0 and newer

  • You now select a template device, configure its settings, and send those settings to other devices monitored by any Gateway in your organization.
The Configuration tab on the devices details page now links to the Device configuration option.

  • The configuration wizard shows the device communication status with links to troubleshooting help.

  • You can now configure secure and write-only data such as passwords and other credentials. Note: This data is not passed from the device to IT Expert.

  • The device configuration process can no longer be canceled once it has begun.

  • The Description column was removed from the Device configuration results table.

On the Device Configuration page of the IT Expert web interface, select an APC SNMP device to use as the source to configure settings on other APC SNMP devices monitored by EcoStruxure IT.

Requirements

  • All Gateways in the organization must be updated to version 2.0 or newer to access new features.

See Updating EcoStruxure IT Gateway to the latest version

  • Available for IT Expert Administrators and Operator users with appropriate device permissions

  • FTP and/or SCP credentials for all the APC SNMP devices must be correctly configured in the Device File Transfer Settings option in the Gateway. Only supported NMC 2 and NMC3 devices in your organization are available to configure.

  • Only the values exposed in the config.ini for both the source and destination device can be configured. User management settings may not be available on some devices. You can change FTP and SCP user credentials in Device configuration >  User configuration.

  • Device configuration is not supported for monitored NMC 4 devices. There is no config.ini file on NMC 4 devices.

Configure devices

Select an APC SNMP device to use as the source to configure settings on other APC SNMP devices monitored by any EcoStruxure IT Gateway in your organization.

  1. Log in to IT Expert.

Click Device Configuration in the left sidebar and then click Configure devices.

  2. Select the template device you want to use as the source to configure settings on other devices.

Click Don't see the device you're looking for? to see troubleshooting tips.

Click the Settings icon ITE device settings icon.png to view available settings for the selected device.

Click Get latest to refresh the list of settings to be sure the latest settings are displayed.

Click the device communication Status link for troubleshooting help.

  3. Configure the device settings you want to write to other devices.

Click Get latest to refresh the list of settings to be sure the latest settings are displayed.

    ITE device configuration 2.png

    About device settings

The list of device settings does not dynamically refresh. Device settings update during a discovery, a rediscovery, and after the FTP or SCP settings change as a result of a running device configuration.

The date and time indicate when the device settings were most recently updated.

Current sensitive values on the device, such as username, password, IP address, and location, are not populated in IT Expert. Values that you change are masked. Click the eye to view them.

IMPORTANT: SNMPv1 and SNMPv3 credentials are also configured in the Gateway for device communication. Changes made to these credentials in IT Expert must also be made in every Gateway that monitors the device, and the affected devices must be rediscovered.

Otherwise, communication with the Gateway will be lost.

You can add the new credentials to the Gateway(s) before you configure the devices in IT Expert as long as the old credentials are not removed. You must still rediscover the devices.

Configure APC NMC device credentials in the Gateway

Configure Gateway device file transfer settings

  4. Select the destination devices you want to configuration settings on.

Note: If you want the settings you configured to apply to the template device, you must also select that device as a destination.

    ITE device configuration 3.png

The Status column in the device list indicates whether the devices is Ready, Offline, or Credentials invalid.

Click the Status link for troubleshooting help.

  5. Review your changes, and click Apply.

    ITE device configuration 4.png

Once device configuration starts, it cannot be stopped or canceled.

A progress bar shows the number of devices Completed, Failed, In progress, and Not started.

TIP: Filter, search, and sort to locate devices.

Configuration results

Once configuration has finished, you can select a device on the Device configuration page to confirm that settings were applied.

All destination devices that support config.ini are listed regardless of whether the settings from the source device are valid. Settings from the source device that are selected but cannot be applied are ignored.

Troubleshooting

See IT Expert - Device communication failure

Communication failure: Cannot communicate with the device. Check network settings and SNMP community names, and try again.

Invalid credentials: Check that the device credentials match the Device File Transfer Settings option of the Gateway.

There is no configuration for the device.

Make sure the FTP and/or SCP settings are configured correctly in the Device File Transfer Settings option of the Gateway.
