I logged into the unit via the web interface with the default username of "apc" and default password of "apc". Used IE of course since Firefox isn't supported.
I went and tried to change the username and password. I used a complicated password that had capital letters and an Exclaimation point "!" in it. And I change the username to "admin". I hit ok and it said are you sure, and I said "yes". Now I can't log in. It is like it scrambled my password. I'm 100% sure I know the password, and since the password box didn't obfuscate it, I know i didn't misstype it when I originally typed it in.
I tried popping the front cover off of the unit and doing a manual reset with a paperclip. I did that while the unit was turned on, with the unit turned off, and even with the unit unplugged. Tried it for 5 seconds like the manual says, even tried for up to 30 seconds. Tried holding it while powering it off, unplugging, and powering on. Nothing works. When I try to log back in with the original username/password of apc/apc, it won't take it.
What can I do? Is this defective and do I need to return the unit to the place of purchase? Is there another way I can reset the password? maybe some other utility I can run?

Yeah, I'm still pretty disappointed. I expected way better from APC.
Contact support directly and they will give you a way to access the device again. I'm sure they don't want it shared on the forum.

Can confirm the problem with the HS 500. If you use an exclamation mark in the password, you can no longer a) login and b) the system reset button has no effect in clearing it. Also, brain-deading the unit does not clear the problem - ie there is no reset to the default user id and password. As others have said, this is a potentially great product with a pretty basic problem and it's surprising that there's no firmware update planned or available.

Yeah, the ONLY option is the backdoor password given. The password/system reset buttons DO NOT WORK when the password has been set to an "invalid password".
I tried for hours before contacting support and being given the backdoor access.

Oh well, probably time to dump the unit. The only solution offered by APC support - after 3 business days! - is to reinstall the BackUPS HS software. So I did. Launched the BackUPS HS software, clicked on "UPS Settings" button. And no difference (not that I expected any). Still can't login to the unit using the default username and password.
Seems like some parts of APC support don't support this model - probably too low-end.

But it did not help. The webinterface of the unit shows the serial number AB0926839813 which ist quite different from the one on the unit and the quality assurance test 3B0926X39813. Which one is the right for the backdoor?

The Username Password in the PM don't work on my BH500 I NET. But the webinterface shows the serial number AB0926839813. On the unit and on the quality assurance test is the 3B0926X39813.

I have some problems with login sent to my UPS. I used UID and PWD sent to me but it doesn't work. I tried to reset to factory default values using Manual Reset acording to the User's Manual but it doesn't work too. I assigned a name to my UPS. Should it be reset when I reset to factory values Is there any other way to check why I can't change this settings?
