A year ago I was asking about how to find the UPS model and serial number from PCSS.
Now, my scripts - for newly installed computers - work perfectly.
However, older computers that I check periodically are failing.
I have learned that PCSS takes the "original" pcss.log file, renames it to pcss-1.log and moves it to an Archive folder. Ongoing transactions continue in the pcss.log.
What I'd like to know is:
1. What causes the software to determine an archive is necessary?
2. How large can a pcss.log file become (and is that a factor)?
3. Will PCSS create a pcss-2.log file at some point?
4. Finally, why is the "Device detected!" statement not issued in the new pcss.log file?!?
Thanks!
Asking because I'm going to have to revamp my script to first determine the existence of the archive folder and change actions and responses accordingly.

I can answer "3" - in that PCSS will create any number of pcss-x.logs in the Archive folder.
Hoping that someone from APC/SE can confirm "4" (Device detected!! does not appear in log) occurs because the USB cable is no longer connected. If not, what >is< the condition that would cause this?

For answer to 1, 2, and 3 refer to etc/log4j2.xml. The 'RollingFile' section has the archive configuration. It is configured to rollover (create a pcss-<n>.log) if size of pcss.log goes over 5000KB (5MB). And it keeps a max of 9 archive logs.
You can modify these values in etc/log4j2.xml file if you want. Just be aware this is the configuration for open source log4j2 component used in PCSS. It will be overwritten with the defaults if you install a PCSS upgrade. I.e. you have to modify the values again after each upgrade.
For 4 I observe 'Device detected' is still in my pcss.log. It will show up every time PCSS service is started (OS startup, or manually stopping/starting the service) and the UPS is connected. It will also show up if you disconnect USB or serial cable, wait for 'Communications Lost' event reported in PCSS, and then reconnect the UPS.
Hope this helps. Any further questions let me know.
