When I click on the "configuration" link in the web interface, to get to the configuration page, all I get is a page that says "Not Found". The reason for this can be seen when you right click to open the frame in a new window: The page it is trying to access is "/CFG.CGI "
There is an extra, junk character inserted after "CGI" (in case it does not show up above.
The configuration page is the whole whole point of this UPS. It is the page where you can tell the UPS — REMOTELY — to shut down or reset the device attached to to a given outlet.
I have tried resetting by putting a paper clip into the hole by the RJ11 jack, under the battery door, and holding for 10 seconds.As far as I can tell, it did not even reset it, much less fix anything.
What do I do with this thing?

Another year has passed and nothing seems to have happened. No Lithium-ION based USVs on the European market that I could find.
I guess we will have to wait until Tesla Energy gets arount to wake this dormant industry from its slumber and lazyness.

I Have used the HS 500 a number of times where a small cost effective wall mount UPS is required. The fact that it can be remotely monitored via an IP connection and even remotely reset is great. Will there be an upgrade or replacement model? The BG500 only seems to come in 120V and is therefore not a replacement.

At this time, I only see BG500 for 120V and BG500-JP for use in Japan @ 100V.
SecretSquirrel - can you tell us if there will be a 230V model coming for BG500? (comparable to BH500INET)

For IE10, I just click the compatibility ICON - looks like a broken page right by the URL - and then I can access the config page. Hey Angela, are you meaning that the BG500 will be sent out as a replacement to fix this problem? That'd be great!

Angela means that people looking to buy a BackUPS HS 500 may want to hold off and wait for the BG500.

We are only offering 100V and 120V currently. I don't believe there are currently plans for a 230V model and I am not sure why.

Sorry for the delay. I did pass along your feedback to the product management team, I just had to track down the right group and it took a little longer than I thought. While there are no plans currently for a unit in 230V for BG500, we may still have BH500INET available but I am assuming like many users, you may already have that UPS and need something newer or more powerful. I also am still working on gathering more information too about other product choices for 230V that may suit your needs or some of them at least. I will pass along any further information as I get it on other product options.

I don't have one but I'm curious: what happens if you delete the junk character and try to access /CFG.CGI?
Also, not that I approve of it, but I think the device only works in IE6 or something stupid like that. I'll try to get access to one to see what's going on.

yes only internet explorer. firefox, chrome, and safari don't work since it is an older interface.

Alright, got my hands on a BackUPS HS 500. Looks like there's some sort of bug in the firmware that creates those weird characters. Getting rid of the weird characters solves the problem. I was able to get the BackUPS HS 500 to work in Firefox by installing the Greasemonkey extension and using this script (be sure to replace the IP with your BackUPS' IP):
// ==UserScript==
// @name fixbackupshs
// @namespace http://www.apc.com/
// @description Fixes BackUPS HS
// @include http://10.218.33.214/*
// ==/UserScript==
var bodyhtml = document.body.innerHTML;
bodyhtml = bodyhtml.replace(/\x00/g,"");
bodyhtml = bodyhtml.replace(/\uFFFD/g, "");
bodyhtml = bodyhtml.replace(/%EF%BF%BD/g, "");
document.body.innerHTML = bodyhtml;
I think Chrome and Opera have similar mechanisms to fix this. I'll investigate those next week.
Also, note that the BackUPS HS can't handle non-alphanumeric passwords [see here|https://community.se.com/t5/APC-UPS-for-Home-and-Office-Forum/bd-p/home-office-forum] so, for instance, if you change the password to include an exclamation mark, you'll have a problem logging in.

Greetings from Finland!
Greasemonkey works really well. After a little practice work (Greasemonkey was not familiar to me). This correction is, however, a detour. Which works only on a particular PC, which "repairs" have been made.
..*but APC should fix this bug ASAP !!* (new firmware for HS500) When you are forced to use IE. You can use UPS management only from a Windows PC- machine. You can not use Mac's (PC and iPad), You can not use probably any mobile device cellular smart phone or tablet (Anroid, Symbian, Blackberry etc) or any Linux based distributions (included only Firefox and Chrome)
Extensive browser compatibility is very important for me. When I recommend or bye next device. I thought that the device is somehow broken when I could not access Configuration- page. I would have returned the device to dealer, if this (Greasemonkey) correction would not be found.
I use only Mac and Linux- based devices at home 🙂

Very impressive!
The real answer, of course, will be for APC to fix this bug. Unfortunately, our purpose in buying this networked APC device was so staff would be able to reset our router and modems without having to get into the (distant, locked and often inaccessible) server room. Accordingly, it really needs to work properly to facilitate its intended use.
Your script is very helpful, however. I had not even contemplated that a workaround was even possible. Thanks very much.

Got it working with Firefox 20.0.1.
I had the same problems as nxnw and installed the plugin (addon) IE Tab v2 (my version 4.12.22.2). When you render your APC configuration tab into IE mode, it works fine. When you go to 'extra' and select the 'IE Tab options', you can add the page, IP address of your APC UPS and then it will be automaticly set to IE.
This works fine with all old webinterfaces.
I agree on nxnw that APC should fix it and hopefully the newer models have browser compatibility.

The Back UPS HS replacement has a completely different web interface (basically it uses a form of our Network Management Card product found in SMB and Enterprise applications) which supports most if not all all modern browsers. It's SKU will be BG500 and it will be a lot more full powered than the Back UPS HS 500 in many other regards - just incase anyone is looking to get a BH500NET.

Another 10 Months have passed and APC has not used them to adapt the Lithium USV to the 230V market.
Sad 😞

Another year has passed and APC has not used it do, well... anything. Even the non-lithium 2015/2016 models that came to the european market do not even include network by default. I guess my best shot for a Lithium USV is waiting for european availability of the Tesla Powerwall.
Really sad that APC does absolutely no innovation. I just ordered a replacement battery pack for the aging MGE USV. When there is no innovation at all in the market, I'll just keep the old one. Sad though, would have preferred something modern.
