Unable to install PowerChute Serial Shutdown software

I'm trying to install the software to use with a brand new APC Back-UPS 600. When I run the setup file, after accepting the terms, the setup doesn't do anything. It's still running in task manager. Here's what I get in the install log.

2025-06-18 15:44:25 --- Installing PowerChute Serial Shutdown 1.3.0.301
2025-06-18 15:44:25 --- .onInit
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- CacheOSLanguage: OS language cached: 1033

2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- CustomGUIInit
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- PowerChute Serial Shutdown is not installed
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- CheckJapaneseOS: OS language identifier detected: 1033
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- Checking if PowerChute Business Edition is installed
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- PowerChute Business Edition is not installed
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable Package (x64) is already installed
2025-06-18 15:44:27 --- PowerChute Personal Edition is not installed
2025-06-18 15:44:32 --- UPS connected, checking hardware id before installing APCUPS driver
2025-06-18 15:44:33 Error installing APC NPM driver, return code -2

The device does show up under devices when I connect it to my computer. I also see the driver added to device manager. I've tried uninstalling the driver before attempting the install again which does not help. Nor does updating the driver in the device manager. I've also tried restarting the computer and the UPS as well as trying to install without it plugged in.

Any other ideas why the setup could be getting stuck?

PowerChute Serial Shutdown installs a so called null-driver (named 'APC UPS') which replaces the plug-and-play driver (named 'HID UPS Battery'). The purpose of the null-driver is disabling native power management on the OS for the UPS. I.e. you want PowerChute Serial Shutdown to protect your computer during power failures, and you don't want a Windows power plan interfering with this.

From the installation logs I can see that null-driver installation fails. This will occur if there is no UPS connected to a USB port during installation. Obviously that's not the case for you as you state you have the UPS connected. Error code -2 means the hardware ID of your UPS did not match any of the known APC UPS hardware IDs. Not sure why the installer hangs at this point.

Some things you could try:

- Make sure you've got latest Windows updates installed (early Win 11 versions had issues with USB devices).

- Try a different USB port.

If it doesn't work then could you please provide some additional information to help us troubleshooting your issue:

  • Your UPS model which you can find on sticker at the back or bottom of the UPS (it should be different from the generic 'Back-UPS 600' name you already provided).
  • Your Windows version and build.
  • The UPS hardware Id. You can find this through 'Control Panel - Device Manager'. Right-click the 'HID UPS Battery' device and select  'Properties' from the context menu. Open 'Details' tab and in the dropdown select 'Hardware Ids'

I was able to install it on a different computer without an issue. I still have not been able to install it on my computer, but since this UPC was purchased for a coworker's computer and it is working, I am not going to try and further diagnose the problem. I appreciate the quick and detailed response. Thanks for your help.
