UPS 550 emits constant tone, no leds, with nothing plugged in and brand new battery

As the subject indicates, I have a APC Back-Up ES 550 (BE550R-CN, 3B0645X11831), with a brand new battery. With nothing plugged into it, I plug it into the wall and turn it on, and it immediately emits a constant tone. The tone doesn't stop until I shut it off. This indicates overload, but there is nothing plugged in. Is there a fix for this, or is it just broken?

Typically if there is an overload fault with nothing connected, we would have you do a "braindead" procedure, where you would disconnect the battery, unplug all the load, and the UPS from the wall. After about a minute, you should reconnect the battery and try to start the unit on battery (no load, no wall power) and see if you still have the error. This is a "coldstart" and isolated the unit from the wall power. If there is no issue then, you can plug it into the wall and it should be all set. If not, the UPS would need to be replaced. You might want to unplug it and remove the battery cover.

Check to see if the either of the battery cables came off.

That kinda of common when you put the battery in, it is a tight fit.

I did that, the battery connections are good.

I also tried unplugging and holding the on button, which is supposed to cause it to beep twice to reset. No beeps were forthcoming, so that may indicate something as well.

Hi Shanon,

I tried what youi suggested. With just the battery in (brand new one), nothing plugged in and not plugged in, the power button does nothing. Then when plugged in, for a few seconds after I turned it on it made a strange ticking sound, then went to the constant tone. Looks like it's done.

I'll call the number you provided to do a trade-in.
