Issue with multiple devices are plugged into A 9port SurgeArrest that is plugged into a APC UPS

I have Cisco network POE switches plugged into a 9-port APC SurgeArrest unit. The SurgeArrest unit is plugged into an APC UPS model (SMX7500RM2U/SMX48RMBP2U).

The Fault Protection indicator was illuminated. When performing troubleshooting, I turned off the SurgeArrest device and removed the devices plugged into it. I then turned the SurgeArrest back on - the Fault Protection indicator on the SurgeArrest device was not lit.

I then plugged in one device at a time into the SurgeArrest. About one minute after I plugged in the last device (filling the device ports in the back of the unit) the Fault Protection light illuminated. I performed multiple tests plugging in the devices one at a time using a different sequence each time. Again the Fault light illuminated after the last deivce was plugged in.

I am trying to determine the cause of this and a resolution.

Can you give me any advice?

Thank you,

Gary

Hello Gary,

It looks like you are daisy chaining a surge protector from a UPS. This is not recommended, nor necessary. All of our UPSs have surge protection built in. The UPS output design prevents the surge protector from seeing a good path to ground, so it displays that it doesnt have protection, since out surge protectors (and UPSs) work by shunting excess energy through the ground.

I would recommend plugging the surge protector directly into the wall and then plugging non-essential equipment and any data lines you want to protect into the surge protector. Everything else can be plugged into the UPS.

Thanks,

Shanon
